What specific lore is broken?
Ive only seen reactions to the trailer soâŚ
Female witcher is the big one. That is supposed to be impossible.
Trial of the grasses takes place in early adolescence. Not whatever age she is now.
Acting without contract.
People have no problem with ciri being the protagonist but calling her a witcher is an insult to the lore.
Unless they come up with a really convincing explanation itâs going to feel forced and inauthentic. I tend to agree.
I think they just didnât have anywhere to go with the series. Do you break Geralt out of retirement? Try to reinvent the series with new character or a character creator?
3 was the only really âhitâ they made and it was unfortunate it was at the end of the trilogy. It makes sense they wanted to make a sequel and ride off the success of 3.
The series was too big to not get a sequel but also not in a good spot for one.
100% agreed.
The whole thing probably should have been left alone imo.
According to the internet, while in the source material she isnât technically a Witcher she considers herself one:
The books see Ciri take on Witcher training, but technically never become a âtrue Witcherâ as she never undergoes the Trial of The Grasses. However, itâs clear she regards herself as a Witcher on some front, as translations of the final Witcher book - The Lady of The Lake - sees Ciri express that there must be something for a Witcher to do in the world she is in, suggesting she considers herself a Witcher still due to her upbringing and the aptitude it gave her for a career in monster hunting, though not fully confirming it. This is made a little more straightforward in the games, where one of Witcher 3âs potential endings sees Ciri take up the Witcher profession officially and explicitly. While Ciri doesnât have the genetic mutation aspect that the rest of the Witchers do, itâs fair to say in both versions that this doesnât necessarily exclude her from being considered one of them, as her powers allow her an arguably greater fighting prowess than any Witcher mutation, meaning there would have been no point to her undergoing the potentially deadly process.
Kind of like how although Kadgar isnât technically the Guardian, the world and Medievh all basically say he is the Guardian in all but name.
There is not a lot of information here and Iâm sure there will be an explanation for her usage of the potions.
Regarding acting without contract, especially if she is not a technical Witcher, she can do whatever she wants.
In a way, if she is a âfreelanceâ Witcher, that may present an even more interesting story.
From my understanding (iâm not claiming to be an expert) the games are non-canonical and take place after the books. Itâs not like people are replaying the book in a video game so if CDProjekRed wants to take the story in this direction I have no problem with it. If people are angry they have to play a female character (strange as that would be on a WoW forum) they can go play an androcentric protagonist game. Frankly I think Ciri should be a black dwarf transgender lesbian just to piss off all the people using a video game to push their political beliefs onto other people.
Iirc the âgoodâ ending in TW3 Geralt has a silver sword crafted to give to Ciri, then retires with Yennifer.
I donât know how you can be more straightforward in telling the audience that she is going to be the successor to the franchise after that.

also from PCgamer sit down with the Witcher IV director Sebastian Kalemba & executive producer Gosia MitrÄga
âThere are some things in common when it comes to fantasies, but to take one thing⌠Geralt was so much defined already that he had his own code that he developed over years. So he knew what to choose between A, B, and C, he was really defined, grounded. Ciri, she is more on her way, defining the way she deals with the struggles around the problems, the quests, and I think that gives us a great opportunity, and also for players to be able to define her on that journey.â
âTo define the way, the Witcher she will be,â adds MitrÄga. "The kind of Witcher she will be during the adventure and the story, right?
Kalemba says this isnât about Ciri being a total cipher, but tailoring the gameâs choices and journey around the âsuper strongâ core elements of her character. "Ciri is so passionate about what sheâs doing that she will never be neutral. She will go for it. And then like in the trailer, she also got a tough lesson in this case: She wasnât able to save the character. She got a lesson, she did her best, she tried to prove them wrong, but ultimately she failed because she couldnât save her.
âSo she cannot have control of everything, but definitely she brought the change. But sheâs definitely more like a blank page, sheâs organic, sheâs all about learning right now, and becoming the Witcher her way.â
