The whole Wrathgate reveal

How’s everyone feeling about it?

Does not change much to be honest, she’s evil.

Yeah it kind of only changes things if you were somehow convinced she was actually looking out for the Forsaken this whole time. Sylvanas has always been super selfish with the Forsaken serving as a convenient veil.

Wait are we talking about when they changed “maybe she did it” to “she definitely did it” in that interview? Yeah I dunno, that didn’t really matter a lot to me in terms of my opinion of the character. Only thing that chapped my bum was that they didn’t bother explaining what they meant by that. She orchestrated Varithramas’ rebellion? How’s that work? He said she gave the order, but Putriss was doing it with the intent of rebelling against her.

The fact that the dude who writes her character seemed to not really care about any of those details makes a lot of sense though I guess. I also didn’t really care for his tone in the interview. He was clearly annoyed that people are annoyed. And rather than at the very least say, “things will make more sense from here on out”, he just offered reasons we were wrong, and pointed out why we were overreacting. Pretty par for the course for Blizzard lately. Which is honestly kind of depressing.

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills because the fanbase is acting like this is brand new information and losing their minds? Maybe I just don’t think this is as much a solid “reveal” as everyone else does.

Also, I do not take issue with his tone at all. Maybe because I agree with him, and don’t find Sylvanas’ actions to be out of character. Mind, I’m a huge fan of the character, so I spend a lot of time thinking about her experiences and motivations. Then again, I find a lot of lore characters to be much more complex than the community gives them credit for…

Huh. Maybe I AM taking crazy pills.

Yeah I’m not sure I’d call Sylvanas complex. Maybe more so than other Warcraft characters but that’s not saying a ton at the moment. I mean Blizzard keeps TELLING us she’s complex, which is nice… I guess. But in practice? She’s pretty 2 dimensionally evil.

We’ll have to agree to disagree, I guess! :vulcan_salute:

I think Blizzard is like, “If I repeat the same lie over and over again eventually everyone will believe me.”

I remember Wrathgate and the narrative supposing that the dread lord in her throne room somehow managed to go behind her back and do it. It seemed unlikely. Then she was blighting things in Cata.

I’m not at all suprised by this “reveal.”

Assuming this is about the interview I only skimmed the notes on, all I can say is that it’s more of the same.

A weird, arbitrary confirmation of previously inferred information that’s come up effectively irrelevant and perhaps loosely opposed to more recent characterizations of the character.

It doesn’t really change any of the current situation at all and seems like a weird thing to bring up. If people are or were ever confused about Sylvanas, her morals, personality, and the direction of her story… That’s not really any of the players’ fault besides some of the willfully ignorant.

I couldn’t care less about what it means itself so much as the perpetual dramatic dancing we get from basically anyone at Blizzard skirting questions or giving irrelevant deflections rather than just addressing concerns.

But I didn’t check out much of that interview specifically so maybe those are very direct answers and I’m just jaded.

My problem with the interview is that he spends half of it bragging about how subtle and nuanced his own writing is, and the other half accusing anyone who thinks she’s evil as being “dismissive”.

“She’s so much more than just a raid boss. People who think she’s evil aren’t reading the between the lines. Also, she was behind Wrathgate, one of the biggest disasters for both factions in the War in Northrend.” I mean he contradicts his main point in the interview, before the interview is even over.

Wait…the writer for Sylvanas does not think she is evil?
Stop…

I’m at a point where enjoying Warcraft means regarding it as a children’s cartoon and expecting about that level of attention to detail in the writing.

Was that intended to be an official lore reveal? I took that as another instance of the developers forgetting their own lore.

I just rolled all of my hind-eyes at this. :peacock: Really?

Something I’ve learned over the years about artists and writers who are arrogant. They’re usually not nearly as good as they think they are. I think that’s the case here.

If people can guess plot-twists from a mile away with reliable accuracy… your writing is not nuanced or subtle. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. We’re playing an MMO, nobody expects uber storytelling worthy of, I dunno, the great RPGs of yore or whatever. People just want something that isn’t distressingly predictable.

The plot, unfortunately, has all the subtlety and nuance of a giant pink squeaky-hammer to the forehead.

I just read Jonathan Franzen’s ten rules for novelists, which was a real help as it has saved me from making the error of ever reading a novel by Jonathan Franzen.

He was getting upset because people are joking… and sometimes not-joking, about her being a future raid boss. Which… I’ve never said for a fact that she will be, but the point of that running joke is that she’s being almost comically villainous, and seems very much like someone who will be a raid boss.

I also didn’t care for his remark about how enjoys the fact that people are getting into vicious arguments over Sylvanas. Because “a divided playerbase is more interesting”. What a -redacted-.

Never forget that interview includes a quote about a conscious decision to manufacture plausible deniability for the purpose of…

… Sheltering her fanbase.

Seriously.

At this point I don’t wonder if people in charge of the story will start having to take blizzard Lore specialists with them to interviews. It seems easier to do that than to have someone come out later and embarrass all the people who couldn’t remember speculation from actual lore and shot their mouths off.

Then again, knowing blizz this piece of ‘confirmation’ will never be confirmed or denied and it’ll be just another piece of gum in the works.

“Sylvanas ordered the Wrathgate?!”

I’m not fancy enough to post links yet but picture the Sarcastic Surprised Kirk meme.

That was my reaction.
