When it comes to new playable races, in all honesty, I really don’t like the idea of a mercenary system. It seems like something that would have a lot of what you would expect from a playable race cut out to save on resources, which would be extremely disappointing in the long run.
When we get new playable races in WoW, I like seeing the lore and culture of said races. I also like seeing the build up to them joining their respective faction or factions, becoming proud members of said faction or factions, a capital city or at least a racial hub, and being involved in various storylines while having a presence in game.
With a mercenaries system, all that gets cut out and just feels extremely empty.
I don’t really want to be a unique individual that joins a faction of their own accord while the rest of their tribe, clan, or what-have-you doesn’t officially join and don’t have any future storylines or in-game presence. And just having my character’s motivation of being allegedly shoved sacks of money and immediately being told I’m a champion savior of the world (of Warcraft!) also doesn’t really fit well.
When a new playable race gets added, I want the love and care that would go into a playable race to go into future playable races. It makes the world (of Warcraft!) feel much better and also with the factions growing in various ways.
And as I said, a mercenaries system with different NPC races would be heavily stripped down compared to playable races and wouldn’t be satisfactory at all. I want my characters to feel like actual characters and not just feeling like they’re there without much fanfare at all.
I’m sure I could go on more, but ultimately, I’m really not fond of the idea of a mercenary feature and how lackluster and disappointing it would realistically be.
