The Underlight Angler Deserves Better – A Love Letter to a Forgotten Fishing Rod

Hey Blizzard, remember when fishing got a tiny bit exciting in Legion?
Yeah, me too.

We had to grind rare fish, chase world-spanning fishing quests, survive NAT PAGLE, and then finally… finally… we earned the Underlight Angler, a literal artifact weapon dedicated to fishing. An actual fishing rod that had its own talent tree. I spent hours in Azsuna, Suramar, and godforsaken pools in Highmountain — just to unlock perks like walk on water, faster fishing, turning into a fish, and other magical nonsense that made fishing feel… cool?

But fast forward to The War Within, or even Shadowlands and Dragonflight before it — and the Underlight Angler is now basically a glorified piece of driftwood. A sad, pixelated reminder of my past glory. I may as well fish with a twig and some string.

Let’s recap:

  • I had to max out Legion Fishing, which was its own mini-suffering.
  • I needed 250 rare Legion fish, and that’s not counting the random chance to even get the artifact quest.
  • The artifact had its own power progression system, similar to real weapons — it even had glowing visuals when upgraded.
  • But now? None of the bonuses work unless I’m in Legion content. And only Legion content. Not even adjacent zones.
Not BfA, not Shadowlands, not Dragon Isles, and definitely not Khaz Algar.

So let me get this straight:
I wielded an artifact forged by ancient sea gods, imbued with magical powers, upgraded through the literal blood, sweat, and algae of dozens of hours of grinding — but if I try to fish in Zaralek Cavern, it’s like I brought a pool noodle?

Meanwhile, any green-quality fishing pole from BfA gives me more actual benefit than my mythic-tier magical angler weapon.

What’s the Fix?

It’s simple:
Make the Underlight Angler scale. Let its abilities work everywhere. Let us enjoy the water-walking, instant-fishing, and fish-form perks across all expansions. We earned it. And if that feels too OP, make it scale once you’re max fishing level, or even just let us re-awaken it with a small quest in The War Within.

You gave druids a tree form that works in all content. You gave us new profession gear that scales with crafting level. Why not let us have our shiny, magical fish stick back?

Fishing has always been the chilled, zen activity in WoW — a place for collectors, farmers, and people who just want to vibe. Don’t punish us for having put in the work back in 2016.

Let the Underlight Angler shine again. Or at the very least, let me turn into a fish without needing to time travel.

I’ll be in The Ringing Deeps, failing to walk on water with my legendary stick.

The water walking and fish forms still work, but you have to cast once with it, and your fishing gear needs to appear equipped like profession gear.

Well aware of the Fishing raft, but it’s not the same, you turned into a fish with druid levels of speed, it was amazing, I want that back.

Actually the fish form you get from the fishing pole, is faster than the druid aquatic form.
