I see a lot of questions about who-can-tank-what and who-can-heal-where, so I figure we are in dire need of an ultimate Classic WoW Dungeon Class and Spec Guide.
Let’s jump right in.
Viable Dungeon TANKS
A warrior with a shield
A paladin with a shield
A druid with the body of a bear Honorable mention: A warlock with a good healer
Viable Dungeon HEALERS
A priest speced as (NOUN)
A pally with a few holy talents
A shaman with a few resto talents
A druid with some int gear.
Viable Dungeon DPS
Any rogue with/without assigned talent points
A naked mage specced arcane, frost, fire, or other combination only
A warrior without a shield
A druid with the body of a cat
…or an owlbeast
…or normal body shape
A warlock with/without pets and/or talent points
A shadow priest
A discipline priest
A holy priest
A priest priest
A shaman with totems or shocks or weapons
A hunter with auto-shot and some ammo
A BiS geared Ret Paladin with full stack of consumables
I hope this helps put your mind at ease with the class you plan on playing and their viability to succeed in Classic WoW dungeon content. You see, succeeding in dungeons in Classic WoW is not rocket surgery. As long as your teammates are comfortable with their classes and know their toolsets, you are going to find great success in the dungeons.
I think alot of people are way over estimating how difficult Classic is. Doesnt take much gear to meet any of the dps/hps checks for any spec right through to raiding. Basically everything is viable (except for prot pallys raid tanking some bosses). If you are wiping to anything in classic i would say 9/10 times its not because you have a ret pally dpsing, but rather your healer got silenced or someone let CC expire on a dangerous mob.
Yes, it’s not that Classic WoW is difficult, but it does require everyone to play their classes correctly, even at the level 16-20 dungeons. No more infinite-mana, spam buttons blindly, facerolling dungeon sprints.
Most wipes in vanilla Dungeons ( not talking about Raids!) occured when either hunter or tank broke CC on trash or extra trash group wandered into an active combat zone. Trash usually had to be dealt with one or two at a time. My ret in vanilla was fine in dungeons being also a buffer backup healer and backup tank
But quite a few players back in the day found this very difficult indeed. Many folks I ran with wrote macros to spam “DON’T BREAK SHEEP/SEDUCE/etc.!!!” 2–3 times, and still people would break them, generally due to not focusing fire or using AE unnecessarily (a variant of not focusing fire, essentially). At least my warlock banish/enslave couldn’t be broken.
Same thing with patrols or other adds. People would just freak out and start spamming damage around instead of letting the off-tanks and CC folks handle the adds, making any form of control impossible.
I so look forward to this, and to not having to dance around moving geometric shapes on the floor as the hallmark of “difficulty”.
