Just a friendly reminder, to Blizzard, that the default UI is trash and that my personal anecdotal experience is that it turns new players away when you tell them that they have to personally mod their UI to make it look good. Grow up, design a modern UI theme.
Edit: For everyone claiming that the UI doesn’t need an update, the font size on your player’s health bar is actually bigger than the health bar. If I need to explain to you, in 2020, why that is bad design then you probably think Azeroth is flat.
I disagree. I’ve used the default UI, with exception to raid frames, since WotLK. In fact, the modern, minimalist UI look is so out of place to me in a fantasy MMO, and it throws me off.
The Blizzard UI is 2 rows of 20 buttons (give or take). And two gargoyles on the ends.
MOST people make some variant of 4 rows with 8 buttons, or 3 rows with 10 buttons etc etc … and no gargoyles.
Basically, all you’re doing is removing the gargoyles, adding in 8,000 pounds of drama, and acting like your new UI is akin to not just reinventing the wheel, but introducing a whole new class of physics that explains everything about the universe.
The default UI is fine. People just have to be soooooooo specccciiaallllllllllll. +barf+
I don’t use it and find it feels a little archaic compared to some other games, but it definitely could be worse. It serves its basic function and is completely playable.
However, when you start modifying it you realize how hard it is to go back to the default. I don’t prefer their UI overall, but FFXIV had a good idea in implementing ElvUI-like features into their base interface. For example, the ability to move and heavily customized your action bars without needing to download a third party add on.
EDIT: I want to add my main problem with the default UI is that your eye is forced to bounce all around the screen for relevant information. In the middle of combat or other takes, it’s easier to be able to place Important elements toward the center or wherever works best for you. Sure, you get used to looking over the whole screen, but in my opinion it’s easier to be able to customize how you want.
