The Toughest non-dungeon area faced in Vanilla

Mine was the Tower of Althalaxx. It was a devil to take out the boss back in Vanilla.

Believe it or not, this was my first toon created back in Vanilla. I had the hardest time at the Tower of Althalaxx, too. I think that was tough, but not as tough as going to Splintertree Post, and fight the Horde. I just started to re-use this toon (I don’t like warriors, just created a toon just because)…

Moonbrook with the quick spawning Defias mobs that would wreck people.

Tower was bad, but nothing beats that sunken ship for “Deep Ocean, Vast Sea”. The murlocs inside could see you through the walls of the ship, Aggro you, run through the whole ship to get outside to you, and bring every other murloc they found on the way.

Also it was all underwater back when you had like 25 seconds of breath.

I want to say for a single encounter stiches in Darkshire was horrible. Little low level walking down the road then level 40 stiches one shots you and keeps going. He was mean.

I cant really think of an area that I had trouble with but I was late to the game and may not have had a max level toon til bc.

I agree on Moonbrook. Those Defias Pillagers could 2-3 shot you with fireballs, the melee ones hit hard too and they were closely packed together.

It was very easy to pull extras, but by the time you saw that second fireball it’s too late.

I was a holy priest… Soooo everything that was everywhere ever.

The area in Winterspring with the elite dragonkins.

The elite dragon kin by Onyxia’s lair.

The tainted scar in badlands.

Good luck getting out of there alive…

Hmm… a couple areas come to mind.

Darkwhisper Gorge in Winterspring
This area was full of extra-strong elite demons (three times the health as other elites of the same level, about 18k to the usual 5-6k), all level 57-60 (and one named one at level 63). I actually soloed the two felguards at the entrance repeatedly for the last couple levels on my warlock to reach level 60, thoroughly abusing fear-kiting and other tricks to do it as Affliction. It was a fun little place for me at the time.

The Tainted Scar and Dark Portal in Blasted Lands
… alright, more elite demons near level 60. The difference here? They’re immune to ALL crowd control (except Banish), even snares, and you CAN’T solo them. The also had WAY more health than the demons in Darkwhisper Gorge, as much as Molten Core raid trash at least (60k+ health per mob). Also the only place you found unnamed Dreadlords in Vanilla WoW, as well as non-summoned Doomguards; mobs & bosses in dungeons/raids excluded, obviously.

Redridge Mountains. Still to this very day its still one of the most Toughest Areas since Vanilla thanks to that hardest quest where you try to recuse people and blow up half of the valley.

Underwater stuff. Awfully tough without the breathing potion. I must be a little manic too, cuz I hold my breath when my character goes underwater.

Hogger was a wrecking machine when the game first started. LOL Hey look a pig… bam I get wrecked.

Silthilus and the tunnels under it. F that place.

And then, all those naked gnomes, they swarmed him piranha style.

I was gonna say the same! I’m going to roll a toon in Classic just for that:)

Jintha’Alor in the Hinterlands was pretty bad. You had to go through there to rescue Sharpbeak’s chick who was right up the top. All the trolls there were elites, but over sucessive expansions they have been thinned out and made regular mobs.

How about those gorillas in Stranglethorn Vale? And WoW tip used to tell us it was safer being on the road…

that one was bad because there wasnt much counter play at that level. you just kind of died if you got in a bad position

Oh, I remember another area: The Tower of Ilgalar at the Galardell Valley (Redridge Mountains). Between this, and the constant ganking of Horde rogues or hunters, us Alliance players had a hard time after leveling past 15.

That quest chain was a lot of fun. And it was challenging.
