The Tidemother

So is this Queen Azshara? If so why was she benevolent to the Kul Tirans for so long?

To trick them into thinking it was safe to sail their fleets out over the ocean.

So she could sink them when the time was right.

There are plenty of possibilities, all with their own problems. She could just be an abstract personification of the sea rather than an actual being. She could be Neptulon, if you look past the weird gendering. Hell, she could be Elune.

She could be some other kind of sea entity who got usurped by Azshara. Brother Pike does mention that the Tidemother recently started acting demanding and harsh. I’d bet that Azshara was impersonating the original Tidemother just enough to pass but couldn’t mimic the nurturing side very well so she changed the personality a bit.

It’s not Azshara. She’s defeated and all is still well with the tidesages. Clearly they are getting their power elsewhere

Tidemother is probably just the Kul Tiran name for the nameless and eternal Spirit of Water

If Aszhara was the Tidemother, the main reason she was benevolent to them for so long was likely because they were worshipping her like a god. It was only recently, as her plans were starting to come together, that she became more demanding.

We might never find out because haha who cares about Kul Tiras lore, go hug the Horde and poke out N’Zoth’s eye kid

Elune is mentioned as having power over the tides. Where ever she is or who ever she is, she does have some sway over them. But whether the Kul Tirans view her as the Tidemother has not been mentioned.

There could be other entities beneath the tides that Azshara and Nzoth are unaware of or unable to manipulate.

Also - it is possible that Azeroth herself is the tidemother, and has some sway over the waters as she lays dormant.

She’s 10,000 years old. It’s not hard to make humans follow deity

Current personal theory is that:

Original Tidemother = Kraken Wild God, possible candidate is Oacha’noa.

However after the events of Cataclysm, where the Krakens largely sided with Azshara and thus N’zoth, perhaps Azshara extended her influence to corrupt the Kul Tirans. So she spiritually/magically ā€œusurpedā€ this Kraken Wild God.

My hope is that with Azshara relatively out of the picture and N’zoth extremely out of the picture after the raid, hopefully this Kraken Wild God will reveal herself. However Blizzard probably doesn’t care

I really hope we get something about the Tidemother. When the expansion first launched, that was one of the Kul Tiran cultural aspects I was most interested in.

It seems like it may be Elune. She has been noted to have power over the tides as far back as Cataclysm, and this interesting flavortext on the first rank of the essence ā€˜The Ever Rising Tide’:

ā€œThe whispers of Elune and Neptulon play on the tides,
their words etched in stone are a tribute to the balance
of their powers.ā€

Elune’s nurturing aspect is already called ā€œThe Motherā€ as it is, also. As we saw in the Azshara Warbringer N’zoth can and does mimic other people’s voices, even their own inner monologue voice… so my suspicion is he began pretending to be her to corrupt the tide sages.

HOWEVER, I have also wondered could of Neptulon and Elune of had a child, which is the Tidemother now?

We also saw Elune’s influence on the tides in this quest:

Video of the quest at Darkshore, since the Tidal Spirits have quotes they say when you free them from the Twilight’s Hammer:

Tranquil Tidal Spirit says: Return to the ocean... return to the tides.
Tranquil Tidal Spirit says: The tides do as Elune commands.
Tranquil Tidal Spirit says: We thank you mortal. The ocean's will is to be free.

None of the above. She’s a water-bender with face paint.

My money is that the Tidemother is most likely Elune, and Azshara was impersonating the tidemother to manipulate Lord Stormsong. Like how H.A.D.E.S pretended to be the ā€œburied shadowā€ in Horizon Zero Dawn to manipulate the shadow Carja.

Plus this does factor in Azshara’s belief that she is above Elune. Azshara did create a cult of personality around herself during her reign. To the point that nearly everyone in the Night elf resistance during the WotA believed she was usurped by Xavius because pretty queen can do no wrong.

Tidesages are akin to shaman in their powers over wind and water. The original Tidemother was likely the Spirit of Water or something like that. A relatively benevolent force.

But during Stormsong’s quests it was mentioned that at some point the whispers of the sea suddenly changed. They became darker, more violent and aggressive. This would be where Azshara stepped in and impersonated herself as the Tidemother to corrupt the sages.

The God of the Deep N’Zoth is very good at impersonating her despite his main portfolio(judging from there being Orbs of Fire all over his City) being Fire(from the Deep Places of the World no less)!

What if there isn’t a Tidemother? I mean do they really do anything that Shamans couldn’t by simply beseeching the elements of wind and water to bless their vessels?

Night elf shaman confirmed. Thanks yo
