The Sunwell

During the Nightborne recruitment scenario the Nightborne delegation remarked the Sunwell was similar to the Nightwell, & Lor’themar showed it off as a location of note / obvious importance-

How do non Thalassian Elves sense the Sunwell? I ask because aren’t Thalassian Elves supposed to be able to draw on it even from great distance? So how would Nightborne perceive it?

Not that they would need to but can they draw from it too now that BEs/NB are close allies and friends? Is that a story narrative that can be explored if NB paladins happen in the future w more classes becoming available?

Elves are intrinsically attached to magic in wow. I’d imagine it’s pretty easy for any of them up sense it’s power and probably if they were taught how to draw from it.

We see lots of “drawing” magic out of things throughout wow, even ignoring the severe version blood elves learned from Illidan, so I imagine drawing magic from the Sunwell if close to it would easily be possible.

The great distance that Thalassians enjoy is unique to them as far as I know though. The Nightwells power seemed mostly imparted through putting it into consumables.

I don’t see why they couldn’t use that angle though for Nightborne pallies. That could be neat.

Nightborne are obviously very welcome in Silvermoon, and in joint Blood Elf expeditions / our leaders are our now married, so I don’t see why some NB wouldn’t be interested in the Sunwell.

I remember the quest line where Mordent Evenshade of the Highborne of Endre’thelas stared wistfully at the moonwell in Darnassus. He sensed the magic of the fount echoing back to the Well of Eternity.

The Night elf sentinel commented a hurtful statement. Even then the Night elves around the city felt the moonwell’s arcane power. It soothes them. For a race that is supposedly against magic they could sense it.

High/Blood/Void Elves can also sense the Sunwell from great distances and feel its arcane powers. Similarly to any Shal’dorei/Nightborne with their Nightwell. All elves have a magical sixth sense where they can feel arcane artifacts and magical wells. To what degree can be debated, but all elves have a magical inclination that shows that they are forged from the magical waters of Azeroth. They will forever be marked by said waters and the powers of the arcane/light/void etc. They like trolls will change by whatever fonts they empower themselves with.

Hence why Elves can have eyes that glow with the Light and eyes that glow with Fel taint, nature and the arcane. All elves seem to show their magical affinities in their eyes. Light/Void/Arcane/Fel/Nature etc. I wish they showed the Sunwell’s effect on non-Thalassians like Nightborne who tap into it.

I imagine they definitely would be interested.

They no longer need their Nightwell and it is gone now but they’re still clearly into any and all magical apparati around.

I kinda wish their Nightwell was still there. Seeing their own order of arcane paladin may have been cool.

When a Belf is born they have to set up a national identity fingerprint and password to login to the Sunwell National Identity Database. They are also given a wireless mana chip which is embedded in their iris so that they can login from vast distances to tap dat mana

I assumed anyone magically inclined can detect magic just by having a close enough proximity to an object, and you wouldn’t have to be a blood elf to feel it. Being a belf just means you’re biologically enslaved to its existence, more or less. So they in particular can’t not feel it, no matter where they are in the multiverse.

Reminds me of the story of how I became the only goblin high elf in the world. I was born in a small town of simple goblin weapons designers when a high elf band approached seeking trade. Seeing it as a great opportunity to test their new design the goblins blew up the whole town. While searching through the rubble one of the high elves, my father, found a baby Coblyn and took pity on the defenseless infant.

Dad wanted me to be a paladin but I just couldn’t get it. I get the steal from the rich part, the rest makes no sense. Give away worldly possessions? Hah! I did find work as an apprentice at the magic shop, I was able to earn extra money by entertaining little elf children while my partner used the distraction to cut their parents’ purses. Those were the golden years, they wouldn’t last.

One day this fancy human prince comes through, forget his name but it was something awful like art house. He was curious about a high elf goblin and engaged me in conversation. What a rube, within 5 minutes I sold him the Sunwell. What’s he going to do? Carry it home?

My dad was really mad. I offered him 20%, a very generous offer and all he had to do was keep quiet and take the money but… no. He tells the other high elves about it who seem REALLY mad at me. I offered 25%, I’m losing money at that price but they wouldn’t listen to reason nor bribe.

They beat me severely and kept all the money, maybe we’re not that different after all. I love you, dad, but I want my money back.

The Sunwell is our biggest weakness. A void elf just need to take a bath in it and instantly void creatures will attack it. Kael had the right idea when he destroyed it to make sure the taint can’t affect the elves any more.

Priests too, now I think of it. Right now their faith/method of empowerment is a big question mark. They didn’t exist before the race became playable, I’m not sure worship of Elune is something the writers would be wise to tie into the Horde, and they almost certainly didn’t adhere to the Church of the Holy Light under that bubble.

I’m not sure if every Nightborne is capable of it, but Valtrois was able to sense leylines and performed a ritual that redirected their energy to Shal’aran with the help of Stellagosa.

The Sunwell was formed at a convergence of leylines, so I suppose the Nightborne are able to perceive it just as they would any other form of arcane energy.

I don’t think the conventions/conditions regarding who can and can’t tap into an elves’ source of magical power has ever really been established, has it? That’s something that would be interesting to know.

For instance, when it was active, a Nightborne could selectively be cut off from the Nightwell, but it’s never explained how it’s done. Sure, we see some Nightborne being held in magical containment cells, but Thalyssra and the other Nightfallen are free out in Suramar when their withering began.
