The Scarlet Compendium | Greatest Scarlet Lore Source

I have dedicated myself and my time to creating this content for Scarlet RPers regardless of server.

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the Scarlet Compendium is to provide roleplayers and lore buffs with a more comprehensive depiction of Scarlet history and culture. The focus of the Scarlet Compendium is on human Scarlet culture, but it will delve into how the events since Vanilla WoW and following have changed Scarlet culture. This will include the history and nature of its founding. Having a strong foundation on the human Scarlet culture is therefore paramount for roleplayers of Scarlet characters, whether they are human or dwarf or quel’dorei. The Compendium is a work of fanon. This Compendium draws heavily upon canonical lore and in-game evidence - and I provide my sources where they are available - but the work nevertheless requires many assumptions, educated guesses, and presuppositions to fill in these many gaps in evidence. As such, the Compendium is not intended to be an authoritative (i.e. canonical) guide to Scarlets. I will update the Scarlet Compendium as new lore becomes available and when I find time in my schedule.

Contributions and constructive feedback are always welcomed. Also please share this Compendium among your various lore and RP communities, as this Compendium is meant for them.

THE SCARLET COMPENDIUM

I. Geography

----------------------------------

The Kingdom of Lordaeron occupies a large swathe of territory. The western portion is the Tirisfal Glades that is a border to Lordaeron’s southernmost domain, the Silverpine Forest, that is split in half with Gilneas; the Hillsbrad Foothills centrally connecting to the Silverpine Forest and the Western Plaguelands followed by finally the Eastern Plaguelands in the very east.

CLIMATE AND WEATHER

“The Eastern Plaguelands are north of the Hinterlands and east of the Western Plaguelands. Darrowmere Lake borders the region on the south, while Zul’Aman and Quel’Thalas lie to the north. The entirety of the Plaguelands is polluted and wretched, blighted by the Scourge. The undead plague has corrupted the people and nature itself. Noxious orange mists float like living entities over the blackened, filthy soil. The Scourge’s power here is absolute.” (LoC)

“Silverpine Forest is a vast, primeval wood that runs along Lordaeron’s rugged western coast. The land is fairly flat, but small hills, mossy overhangs and grassy knolls are common. Razed farms and vacant gold mines dot the land. “Forsaken” is an appropriate term for this region for various reasons. Many wild creatures roam through the trees, though they seem to be more aggressive than is natural. The Alliance once kept Silverpine Forest pristine and beautiful. In those days, the forest must have resembled the Hinterlands far to the east. Since the Third War, no one is left to take care of the forest, and it has grown wild. After the Forsaken broke from the Lich King’s dominance they claimed Silverpine as part of their territory, though many dispute that claim.” (LoC)

“Like Silverpine Forest, Tirisfal Glades is an immense woodland with forbidding trees, threatening shadows and lurking mists. The animals in the woods are not as vicious as those in Silverpine, however. I find it odd that this haunting land, under the Forsaken’s rule, may in fact be safer than Silverpine Forest. I cannot, though, get used to the purple trees.” (LoC)

“The Western Plaguelands resembles the Eastern Plaguelands in most respects. The earth is gray and sick with blight. The trees are corrupted and transformed into enormous, spotted mushrooms. The same toxic mist that pervades the Eastern Plaguelands haunts this realm as well. Even the air seems darker. Though the Scourge capital of Stratholme is many miles away, I felt as though Kel’Thuzad could see me even here. The Western Plaguelands is west of the Eastern Plaguelands, east of Tirisfal Glades and north of the Alterac Mountains. Lordamere Lake borders the region to the southwest.” (LoC)

“The Hillsbrad Foothills offer a land of rolling green hills and fertile meadows. Rich rainfall creates many arable tracts, and this natural bounty aids Hillsbrad’s self-sufficiency. The southern shore is windy but gentle, allowing ships to dock easily at Southshore’s harbors. Torn Fin murlocs frequent the shores as well. Mountain lions, creeper spiders and gray bears roam Hillsbrad’s pastoral landscape.” [LoC]

GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES

Coasts: As is evident by the massive size of Lordaeron, there are many coasts. “Silverpine Forest stretches across Lordaeron’s western coast.”, “the Western Plaguelands’ northern border stretches across Lordaeron’s coast”. [LoC]

Rivers: The longest and widest river in Lordaeron is the Thondroril River. It starts all the way in Quel’Thalas in the elven lands, goes between the Eastern and Western Plaguelands, filters into the Darrowmere Lake, and continues through the Hillsbrad Foothills west of Durnholde Keep where it filters out into the Great Sea. Although not so easily accessible in game, it says “[u]pon receiving the orders Proudmoore had dispatched his ships down the [Thondroril] river. They had met up with Turalyon and the army just below Stromgarde and ferried the soldiers on board. They had then sailed upriver past the mountains, instead of going over them as the Horde had done. It had saved them considerable time. Turalyon just hoped it would be enough. He would have preferred to sail straight to Quel’Thalas, but Alleria had assured him that would be impossible. Her kin would never allow human ships up their portion of the river. They had been forced to disembark near Stratholme and proceed on foot once again.” (ToD)

Mountains: No mountains specifically are mentioned, but it is said that, “[f]rom Silvermoon, which stood at the northern tip of Quel’Thalas, the orcs could march over the mountains and directly into Lordaeron, emerging not far from Lordamere Lake and Capital City itself. The city had few defenders left, King Terenas having sent most of his men with the Alliance. Fortunately marching over the mountains would mean making their way across Alterac first, and while Perenolde had not been the most stalwart member of the Alliance he would certainly rally his forces against an invasion of his own lands. But the orcs could overwhelm Alterac through sheer numbers and then swarm down out of the mountains to strike” (ToD) This would mean that the mountains of Lordaeron stretch to the Alterac Mountains which is evident between the Western Plaguelands border that Chillwind Camp and Andorhal are just north of all the way up to the northern mountains that Hearthglen is nestled within.

Lakes: Lordaeron is home to various Lakes that were freshwater. “Lordamere Lake; this freshwater lake is enormous, occupying a great fraction of Lordaeron’s midwest. In years past, the lake served as a source of fresh water and fish for Lordaeron’s kingdoms. Now, Lordamere’s isles are infested with monsters and its shores polluted with undead filth. The lake borders five separate regions and provides an untapped means of transport between these areas. May the Light help Hillsbrad if the Scourge sends ships across Lordamere.” There is also the Darrowmere Lake which is home to Caer Darrow. “This freshwater lake lies to the southwest in the Eastern Plaguelands. The Greenrush River, with origins in Zul’Aman, travels through the Eastern Plaguelands and finally empties into Darrowmere. This lake was the site of many naval battles in the Second War, though now it is in the Scourge’s hands and their filth pollutes the waters; more dead fish wash up on the shores every day.” [LoC]

Forests: Lordaeron has many forests and woodland areas. As a whole, the Silverpine Forest, although a zone, is one of the most predominant forests named. We also see examples of lumber being used in Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 for the construction of anything from town halls to a barracks and beyond. It would have also been used for the ships. Based on Google Images, the trees seen in the Tirisfal Glades are conifers. Lumber mills are in abundance in the Crusade from the one at the Scarlet Enclave town of Havenshire to the Hearthglen Lumber Mill before the Argents took it over.

BIODIVERSITY

Lordaeron is populated by diverse amounts of temperate zone flora and fauna. Prominent Lordaerong flora consists of hardwood temperate deciduous and coniferous trees.

URBANIZATION

Major Towns and Cities

Cities: Lordaeron City, Hearthglen, Tyr’s Hand

Tyr’s Hand (city, 9,000): ”Tyr’s Hand is manned by an army of Scarlet Crusaders and is untouched by the undead plague. Located in the southeastern Plaguelands, Tyr’s Hand is the only human settlement left in this part of Lordaeron. In the city’s center is the newly erected Scarlet Monastery, a grand edifice that rivals Stormwind’s Cathedral of Light. General Abbendis commands the city and its Crusaders and priests. Abbendis, like most of the Crusaders, is completely nuts. He believes that the Light has blessed him so that he can retake Stratholme and rout the Scourge. The few humans who roam the Plaguelands desperately seek the safety of Tyr’s Hand, and I was forced to do the same. Currently, the Crusaders pose no threat to the Scourge. They serve only to rile things up a bit and test the Scourge leaders’ tactics. It is only a matter of time before Kel’Thuzad grows bored and destroys the Crusaders for good.” [LoC]
Towns: Hearthglen, Tyr’s Hand, New Avalon, Havenshire
Fortifications: Fenris Isle, Solliden Farmstead (Crusader Outpost), Crusader Outpost, Scarlet Watch Tower, Scarlet Outpost

THE SCARLET COMPENDIUM

II. HISTORY

----------------------------------

“Lordaeron is the most dangerous land outside of Northrend. The Scourge rules much of the continent, and the newly freed Forsaken, who have yet to choose a side, stir beneath the earth. Humans still hold a few shattered realms, but battle hopelessly against enemies old and new. Murlocs, naga and ogres fight against the struggling nations. Human brigands attack and murder their own kind. Forest trolls from Zul’Aman strike out to regain their ancient territory, and human fanatics fight a private crusade against the Scourge. Lordaeron is a land of chaos, where innumerable factions clash across the ashes to further their own trivial aims.” (LoC)

The history of Lordaeron is shrouded in the mystery of huge chronological gaps in the historical record, as is the case with all the human Seven Kingdoms. Though much of Lordaeron history is hinted, little is actually known apart from a few scattered fragments of knowledge separated by hundreds, if not thousands, of years in an indeterminate chronological timeline of events.

III. GOVERNMENT

----------------------------------

Capitals: Stratholme (Eastern Plaguelands); Population: 9,000 [LoC]
EASTERN PLAGUELANDS
Stratholme (Population: 24,000) [LoC]
Tyr’s Hand (Population: 9,000) [LoC]

Government: Dictatorship [LoC]

Anthem: ?? (still searching for proof)

Flag: The Lordaeronian flag is a double-sided eagle that is blue and white. White is the color of Lordaeron. [WC2 Game Manual]

Crest: The Crest of Lordaeron is an ‘L’’. The name comes from Lordain who sacrificed himself in the Troll Wars. [Chronicles of Azeroth]

Battle Cry: Footmen yell “For Lordaeron!” in Warcraft 3 as do various other unites. Abbendis says: “Long live the Scarlet [Crusade/Onslaught]!”
[[Quest: The Scarlet Onslaught Emerges]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/The_Scarlet_Onslaught_Emerges)

Population and Demographics: “In the north, the Scarlet Crusade is always searching for settlers willing to make a stand on the edge of the Plaguelands and reclaim a part of humanity’s ancestral lands.” [LoC]

Members: “Membership in the Scarlet Crusade is high, relative to the human population of the region. The strong sense of abandonment, futility and fear runs high in all humans on Lordaeron, and the Scarlet Crusade feeds that fear with reassurance that the evil will fall while the good remain untainted. The Crusade attracts mostly warriors, people who find in this post-war state that living by the sword is the only way to survive. They feel the need for a strong community where their skills will be utilized, and the Scarlet Crusade maintains that they need strong warriors for their cause. Some priests are drawn to the righteous eradication of the undead, but they often see the Crusade for the zealots they are and rethink their entry. This, of course, is considered suspicious, and they are often slain for their misgivings.” [LoC]

Lordareon was the most populous and largest kingdom of the Seven Human Kingdoms. Composed mostly of humans, there were also Quel’dorei and Dwarves. Some Quel’dorei chose to stay behind when the Silvermoon magisters demanded they come home when the Quel’Thalas kingdom seceded, but priests and sorceresses alike stayed behind. [WC3 Game Manual]

Feudal Government

Monarchy: Lordaeron possesses a hereditary monarchy with the title of “king” as the head of state. House Menethil ruled Lordaeron. House Menethil’s line of kings reaches to at least Terenas Menethil I since Terenas Menethil from Warcraft 2-Warcraft 3 was the II (Second). Terenas Menethil II’s reign alone was pushing 50 years [Arthas: Rise of the Lich King]. He presumably wielded supreme executive and autocratic power of the state although it is interesting to note that when Medivh entered the courtroom of Lordaeron there was a council of senator-like folks standing around in a circle and could have even of been the remnants or ambassadors of the Council of Seven Nations who downplayed the plague that Medivh mentioned was going to destroy Lordaeron and that was why they should set sail west for Kalimdor. (Warcraft 3 Medivh Cutscene) The king may have held executive power over the nobles, the treasury, the military, laws and administration. It is known for sure that Terenas Menethil II worked with Alonsus Faol to rebuild the kingdom and help out the remaining members of the Alliance [WC3] and the minting of coins with his visage on them. [LoC]

For the Scarlet Crusade, the king and House Menethil have been very irrelevant as they expected to have Calia Menethil lead them upon her return. With her becoming a Forsaken and dying at Arathi, however, during the Battle for Azeroth this all changed. The Scarlet Brotherhood took to writing propaganda pamphlets in the Tirisfal Glades. Although their numbers are unknown, they evidently claim to have the Last Menethil who is the last living Menethil left. Sired from an Arathi human of Lothar’s and Thoradin’s Arathorian bloodline, this was a secret child Calia had although we do know Calia actually has a daughter. Thus, while the Scarlet Crusade has been a very religious faction and not political, this would be the de jure ruler of Lordaeron for the Living left. [[Item: The Last Menethil]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/The_Last_Menethil) This Menethil is in hiding until the Worgen and Forsaken are wiped out.

Nobles: Lordaeron also has an influential noble class, who are responsible for holding tracts of territorial land for the Lordearonian crown. Noble land is typically held and inherited within families. Most Lordaeronian nobles are addressed by the title “lord”? affixed to their surnames, though a few nobles use the title "baron” and even “Duke”? Lordaeronian nobility varies, but there were various nobles known. King Terenas Menethil II and Queen Lianne Menethil were at the top. The King was addressed as “Your Majesty” [Tides of Darkness]. Arthas as the Prince was addressed as “His Royal Highness” [RotLK]. It was known that Baron Rivendare was the Baron of Stratholme despite there being a Magistrate as well. Lord Alexei Barov was the Lord of Caer Darrow, Brill, Southshore, and Tarren Mill. For House Fordring, Tirion Fordring was the Lord of Mardenholde Keep which he did not inherit but was actually granted for his services during the Second War [OBoH]. Baron Othmar Garithos was the Grand Marshal of the Alliance remnants after Terenas Menethil II died; his father was Baron Garithos who was the Lord of Blackwood. Lord Aedelas Blackmoore was known as the Master of Durnholde. Duke Falrevere is the Pirate Lord of the Bloodsail Buccaneers. [LoC] There is no known “peerage” or “council” like the House of Nobles in Stormwind. Duke Ragereaver is also a Death Knight wandering in front of Stratholme.

"Human culture is very interesting right now, because the previous boundaries of ranks and professions are gradually beginning to break down due to desperation. Since the foundation of the empire of Arathor, the concept of nobility has been extremely important in human society — only now, with more and more people realizing that your title can’t stop a sword or a plague, are humans beginning to treat each other more and more as equals. This is not to say that nobility has no significance in contemporary human culture; for example, King (well, Prince really) Anduin makes significant military decisions not because of his leadership abilities, but rather because he’s the son of the previous king, and he has authority due to birthright. This is something of an extreme example, but nobles still hold a marginal amount of influence. In fact, most of the boy king’s advisors are “qualified” because they come from a noble line.” [LoC]

Sourced Peerage Titles: King, Queen, Prince, Princess, Lord, Baron, and Duke

Royal Court Officials: King Terenas Menethil II also employed a series of other close royal advisers and court officials: the King’s Guard (Royal Guards) [Warcraft 3] [Day of the Dragon], royal servants like scullery maids, valets, blacksmiths (a master blacksmith), grooms, a horsemaster, and a palace baker. A governess who tutorted Arthas, an unnamed bishop who worked in the family’s private chapel, and a royal torturer as well. [Arthas: Rise of the Lich King] [Day of the Dragon][ [Item: The Rod of Compulsion]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/The_Rod_of_Compulsion)

Municipal Government

Lordaeronian municipalities are organized into governing townships and a town hall is the heart. “The Town Hall serves as a center for the community and commerce of the various towns and military outposts in Lordaeron. As the chief economic building in any settlement, these sites are equipped to process vital resources such as lumber and gold. The steady stream of peasants, who laboriously harvest and transport resources, makes for constant activity near the Town Hall. The training that Peasants require to assist in the growth of their community is also given here.” [WC2] Mayors like Quimby may have been voted to them and organized with Councilmen like we see at New Avalon.

Mayor: Mayors are the chief magistrates responsible for the daily governing of municipal townships. It is not known what capacity mayors served, but New Avalon had one named Mayor Quimby. He was accompanied by New Avalon Councilmen. Somehow the Scarlet Enclave’s or New Avalon’s Mayor was voted and an elected official which is surprising as there is no other instances of Scarlets being voted to their positions. “I assure you this much, Quimby, you won’t be getting my vote next term!” (NPC: New Avalon Citizen)

Town Council: Some Lordaeronian townships, such as New Avalon, had town councils which are evident by the New Avalon Councilmen. Councilmen likely had a variety of different administrative roles depending on the needs of the township. It does not say this is exactly the situation for the town council of New Avalon, but for Southshore’s own: “Southshore’s town council takes an active role in all things, and Magistrate Henry Maleb is a particularly driven and wise man.” [LoC]

Civil Law and Order

The laws of the kingdom of Lordaeron are unknown. It is known as the Scarlets follow some type of religious or political edicts, but Lieutenant Geblers only makes an off-hand comment about it and doesn’t state exactly what this would include. [[Quest: A Scarlet Letter]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/A_Scarlet_Letter_(quest))
What is said is: “Do you think that, just because of the prisoner’s former status, that she would be above the edicts of the Scarlet Crusade? This is most troubling, Gebler. I would remind you that there are penalties for such behavior. I command you to execute the prisoner at once. She is no longer one of us.”

Law Enforcement: The city guards helped preserve the civil order of Lordaeron. Some Scarlet officers and officials, like the High Priest, are protected by Scarlet Bodyguards. [(NPC: Scarlet Bodyguard)](www.wowhead. com/classic/npc=1660/scarlet-bodyguard). Those of greater importance, like the Crimson Courier, were protected by Crimson Bodyguards of the Crimson Legion. The Scarlet Oracle Demetria was protected by 8 Scarlet Troopers all who were apart of the Crimson Legion. This is interesting to note that, on the contrary, Morgan Kevel the Scarlet Messenger at Deathknell was probably of less priority to protect and thus was only surrounded by Scarlet Converts and Initiates.

Southshore had Guards and Hillsbrad had sentries and watchmen which indicates that town guards were apart of the everyday life of Lordaeronians and presumably the Scarlets. Hillsbrad Village, as a smaller village, could likely only procure the militiamen seen guarding them.

At the Scarlet Monastery, there were instances of sentries and defenders that patrolled around but since the Scarlet Crusade is largely a religious military organization and citizens were more of an afterthought, most adults are probably capable of defending themselves than at locations like Southshore or Hillsbrad Village where militia and guards take a more proactive role in civilian life.

Criminal Punishment: We do know for certain that Tirion was going to be hung for treason for saving Eitrigg the Orc and this therefore could have been the cost of committing treason. Orcs seemed to have gotten the most severe punishment as they were put in Internment Camps as punishment for fighting with the Horde. [Of Blood and Honor]

Specifically for the Scarlet Crusade, it was curious that they took a prisoner - and an undead one at that. And despite the prisoner’s former status, she was not above the edicts of the Scarlet Crusade (although it is never clearly stated what these edicts might include). Finally, it is said that there are penalties for such behavior and the penalty for this behavior was execution. The Forsaken contradict that and say that the Scarlet Crusader take no prisoners.[[Quest: A Scarlet Letter]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/A_Scarlet_Letter_(quest))

Both the Onslaught and Scarlet Crusade employ executioners. Defectors may be executed as well. Mariella Ward (or Marielle the Heretic) was going to be sentenced to death for disavowing the Scarlet Onslaught.

Archbishop Landgren also committed suicide as a form of punishment by jumping off New Hearthglen’s cliffs.

Noose: The Onslaught has nooses where Forsaken Prisoners are standing at when they are executed by the Onslaught Executioner.

Pillory: Wooden Pillories are located in New Hearthglen and even as a torture mechanism above Caer Darrow’s front entrance.

Guillotine: A bloodied guillotine lies within the Scarlet Monastery and would be a tool for beheading.

Iron Maiden: The Scarlet Monastery is home to iron maidens as well that Scarlet Interrogators torture their victims.

Torturing Rack: Torturing racks are present in the Vanilla Scarlet Monastery where Vishas is.

Gibbet: Hanging gibbet cages are a common sight across Lordaeron and are seen at the Scarlet Encampment in Tirisfal Glades.

Gallows: Gallows must have been a way for Scarlets to take care of executions in some way although they never suggest what lends itself to going to the Gallows. In the Scarlet Enclave, Scarlet Crusaders being tortured say, “You’ll be hanging in the gallows shortly, Scourge fiend!”

Hanging: There are hanging bodies of humans tied up by their wrists at the Scarlet Monastery entrance perhaps indicating they could have carried the Taint of the Scourge or something along those lines.

Executioners: The Scarlet Onslaught had executioners who wielded executioner axes (NPC:[ wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Onslaught_Executioner]

It does not state exactly what the crimes could be or what the punishments are, but that in Hillsbrad, “they do not tolerate crime of any sort and punishments are brutal [in Hillsbrad].” [LoC]

Military

The Lordaeron Military was magnificent at its peak and fielded a host of different troops. “The armies of Lordaeron are deeply religious and are driven by the belief that humanity must stand steadfast against the blasphemous onslaught of the Horde.” [WC2] This religiousness can be seen in the Scarlet Crusade as well.

Army: Compared to all of the other militaries, Lordaeron’s was the largest as is indicated with: “[e]ach king seemed to feel he should have command of the unified army [of the Alliance of Lordaeron]. Terenas pointed out that Lordaeron was the largest kingdom with the most troops, and also that he was the one who had summoned the rest of them.” [ToD]

It is interesting to note that specifically for the Scarlet Crusade, sergeants who were once a part of the Lordaeron Army like Sergeant Morigan at Stratholme are not present in the Scarlet Crusade.

No longer known as an army, the Scarlet’s military strength is called the ‘Scarlet Crusade Forces’ [Dark Factions RPG Book].

“Despite their increasingly small numbers, the members of the Scarlet Crusade never falter, turn aside, or retreat. The Scarlet Crusade fights directly and it fights to the death. Most military forces fight conservatively and hoard their members, but the crusaders take no care for their own lives. They wade into battle with zealous fervor, slashing and hacking until they either fall or vanquish all enemies.

Only the backing of the priests and paladins (dark or otherwise) keep the order alive, both literally and figuratively. The impassioned speeches and charismatic leadership of the order’s healers motivates their troops into battle, and their healing magic keeps their zealots whole. The military training of the order’s paladins serves the crusade well, as the paladins train the members in basic troop formations and simple tactics that increase their odds of survival. Generally, members of the Scarlet Crusade don’t bother flanking their enemies, as they’re used to fighting undead that are slow and easy to strike and immune to backstabs. Scarlet Crusade units fight in tight formations. They form rings whenever possible, standing shoulder to shoulder, so no one member risks being surrounded by a shambling mob of undead. If forced to disperse, members try to pair up and fight back to back. Paladins and priests freely use their healing abilities and spells in combat, not only to bolster their own troops, but to harm undead enemies. Paladins and priests try not to use their turn undead ability, as their goal is to destroy their enemies, not scatter them. If overwhelmed by superior numbers, though, or confident in their ability to destroy nearby undead with a turn attempt, the commanders call upon their holy power. Many Scarlet Crusade priests can rebuke undead; they force their undead foes to cower long enough for the knights to do their work. When fighting living opponents, the Scarlet Crusade varies its tactics only slightly. The Crusade rarely takes on hordes of living enemies; when they do engage the living, it is usually to target individuals or small groups. Members of the Crusade do use flanking maneuvers when fighting the living. They’re most concerned with preventing the escape of their prey, as living opponents move much faster than undead, and often panic. Mounted knights run down fleeing enemies, while the foot soldiers remain behind to engage slower targets. Foot soldiers also use trip attacks to reduce the odds that their prey will escape.” [Dark Factions]

Sourced Ranks: Scarlet Chaplain, Scarlet Knight, Scarlet Battle Mage, Scarlet Crusader, Scarlet Inquisitor [RPG Books]

Militia: The militia appears to be composed of common citizens. The militiamen are lightly armored, but are equipped with both pick and axe. “Peasants are the hard-working and stouthearted citizens of Lordaeron. They serve as the backbone of the Alliance by mining the gold and harvesting lumber necessary to build up Lordaeron’s military defense forces. Roused by the tales of the orcs’ atrocities during the Second War, the peasants have learned to use both pick and axe to defend their communities if threatened.” [WC3] They are also seen as Hillsbrad Militia at the Hillsbrad Fields before the Cataclysm.

Royal and City Guards: The royal guard of Lordaeron were seen in WC2 and WC3 and mentioned in Day of the Dragon. “Soldiers clad in the uniforms of the King’s Guard stood station outside the gates, with several members of the Knights of the Silver Hand on duty within.” [Day of the Dragon] It does not state what these uniforms are, but in Warcraft 2 they wore full grey platemail armor. When they apprehended Medivh during the Warcraft 3 cutscene, they wore trojan-like helmets with a steel neck guillotte and blue cloth with shrouds, a leather belt, and armed with unique metal pole arms not seen in Warcraft. As a unit in Warcraft 3 they were called the Royal Guard and were clad in black and golden armor (looking like Bandit Lords) who were Garithos’s Royal Guard as the Grand Marshal and leader of the Lordaeron Remnants.

Sourced Ranks: Guard Captain (Falric)

Knights: “Though the hearty knights of Azeroth were destroyed during the First War, the shining knights of Lordaeron still continue to serve amongst the warriors of the Alliance. Wading into combat astride their noble warhorses, the knights are renowned for cutting bloody swathes through enemy ranks. The knights’ speed and mobility mark them as some of the most versatile warriors of the Alliance.” [WC3] “The Knights of Lordaeron represent the fiercest fighting force in the armies of the Alliance. Protected by suits of heavy armor, they carry mighty warhammers with which to crush all who would threaten the freedom of their lands. Astride great warhorses, these honorable and just warriors serve as a symbol of order to the peoples of Lordaeron in these dark and chaotic times. Having learned of the fate the Knights of Azeroth suffered after the First War, they have sworn to both avenge their fallen brethren and free their homelands from the grip of the Orcish Hordes.” [WC2] Scarlet Knights in the RPG books also ride upon Scarlet Warhorses. [LoC]
Specifically for Scarlet Knights, is it known that the testing is rigorous to join although it does not exactly say what this might involve and could have been deadly for those not found worthy up till Balnazzar came out of Saidan Dathrohan’s corpse during the Cataclysm. “Of particular interest to them was a position of knighthood within the ranks; something that required more difficult testing apparently. For it was later discovered that Sothos actually failed his final test. Jarien would not have it though, and in open defiance she insisted that he be able to join her amongst the knights. From what we have gathered, Grand Crusader Dathrohan slew them both right on the spot in the middle of his chambers.” (Item: Brazier of Invocation: User’s Manual) ( wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Brazier_of_Invocation:_User%27s_Manual )

Footmen: “The vast ranks of the Alliance armies have been replenished since the devastating battles of the Second war. Trained in the arts of swordsmanship, the stoic Footmen of the Alliance serve as Lordaeron’s first line of defense. Armed with broadswords and heavy kite shields, footmen are capable of breaking any enemy charge.”[WC3]) “Footmen are the initial line of defense against the Horde. Arrayed in hardened steel armor, they courageously wield broadsword and shield in hand-to-hand combat against their vile Orcish foes. The valorous Footmen are ever prepared to heed the call to arms.” [WC2] It is interesting to note specifically for the Scarlet Crusade that in the Scarlet Monastery there is what is called the Footman’s Armory that would serve as a hub for swords and boards as well as armor to fight the Scarlet’s enemies.

Paladin: “Paladins are a holy order of warriors whose purpose is to defend and shepherd the war-torn populace of Lordaeron. The Archbishop Alonsus Faol perceived that the pious Clerics of Northshire, who suffered such terrible attrition in the First War, were ill-suited for the dangers of combat. Along with many of the surviving Clerics of Northshire, he sought those of only the greatest virtue among the knighthood of Lordaeron and tutored them in the ways of magic. Led by the crusading Uther Lightbringer, it now rests upon these Paladins - christened the Knights of the Silver Hand - to heal the wounds sustained in combat and to restore faith in the promise of freedom from Orcish tyranny.” [WC2] “The Archbishop, Alonsus Faol, prior to the Second War, founded the Order of the Knights of the Silver Hand. The holy knights, or paladins, as they are commonly called, led the battle against the evil orcs and helped to save the lands of Lordaeron from ruin. Though it has been nearly fifteen years since the end of the Second War, the paladins still work selflessly to protect humanity from the gnawing jaws of evil. Empowered by the Light, these mighty warriors brandish both their warhammers and holy.” [WC3] Paladins are also very present through out the Scarlet Crusade.

MILTIARY ORGANIZATION & PRACTICES
The Scarlet Crusade has [reconnaissance] done on their enemies, but it does not say to what extent this involves.[ (Quest: Scarlet Crusade Documents)](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Scarlet_Crusade_Documents) Couriers and messengers also play a crucial role in distributing intelligence such as Meven Korgal coming from the Scarlet Monastery to deliver information to the Scarlet Encampment at Deathknell.[ (Quest: The Red Messenger)](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/The_Red_Messenger) This is further reiterated in the fact during the Scarlet Enclave quests with the Death Knights has them killing the Scarlet Courier to steal his belongings and send High Commander Galvar Pureblood’s unified Scarlet Forces from Hearthglen and Tirisfal to their deaths.[ (Quest: Ambush At The Overlook)](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Ambush_At_The_Overlook)

There is something known as the Tirisfal Regional Command, and while it not known to what capacity it existed, it was headed by a trio of three Captains: Melrose, Vachon, and Perrine who were all Captains of their own Watch towers.[ (Item: Scarlet Crusade Documents)](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Scarlet_Crusade_Documents)

Joining the Scarlet Crusade:

Although there is never an official way to “join the Scarlet Crusade” mentioned, there is potential examples of what that process looks like. It may have involved proving
“if you are with [the Scarlet Crusade], then [you would need to] gather your courage and prove your allegiance—destroy the undead”. If this initiation was complete, them the “Crusade [would] embrace you”. For those who were willing to join, “if [they did] not shy from righteous slaughter, then perhaps [their] path lies with us
”[ (Quest: Down the Scarlet Path)](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Down_the_Scarlet_Path) It does not mention at what point this was apart of the joining process, but Scarlet Converts and Initiates wore [Scarlet Armbands](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Scarlet_Armband) ([quest: The Scarlet Crusade](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/The_Scarlet_Crusade_(quest))). “The weapons of the Scarlet Crusade are many, and new initiates must be indoctrinated in the use of blade, hammer, arrow, and shield --effective tools against the Undead.” [Adventurer’s Guide of Armsmaster Harlan] “Once you ask to join the Crusade, you must remain quarantined for at least a month. The Crusade wants to make sure you’re not an undead masquerading as a living person in order to infiltrate the organization. During the quarantine, generals and inquisitors visit the prospective member several times to interrogate him and make sure he’s willing to do what it takes to support the Crusade. My source was vague about what happens during these interrogations, but it is sworn to secrecy.” [LoC] We don’t know exactly what an inquisition would involve, but, some of the Scarlet Commanders and other Scarlets at the Enclave when being tortured with pokers said, “I’ve survived three separate inquisitions! This is nothing in comparison!” and thus must have been a very painful process. Joseph the Awakened would tell adventurers to kill Vishas and Thalnos because, “[Vishas and Thalnos] take great pleasure in torturing new recruits endlessly to ensure that they are ‘pure’. It is an affront to the Light!” (Quest: The Dark Side of the Light) Perhaps after this inquisition is over, the Scarlet Crusader when they are no longer a Convert or an Initiate with Scarlet Armbands would receive a Scarlet Signet Ring (Item: Scarlet Signet Ring) which the Forsaken hunted down Scarlets to achieve and only dropped by the higher ranking Scarlets that were not Converts and Initiates. [Quest: Proof of Demise]

THE SCARLET COMPENDIUM

IV. FOREIGN RELATIONS

----------------------------------

While the Alliance of Lordaeron had all the Human Kingdoms involved, this was separate from the situation for the Scarlet Crusade. “Then I hereby declare the founding of the Alliance of Lordaeron! We shall stand together as one, as our ancestors did long ago, in the Arathi Empire.” The others nodded and Terenas continued.” [ToD] During this time, all Seven Human Kingdoms were a part of the Alliance. Inevitably though, Stromgarde and Gilneas and the Quel’Thalas kingdom would all secede after the Second War [WC3 Game Manual]. By the time the Scarlet Crusade formulated, though, it would appear that Scarlets all hailed from any of the human kingdoms. Noticeably absent are Gilneans but this could be justified by the fact the Greymane Wall was already in place at this time.

“The scattered, nomadic humans of Lordaeron fought to consolidate their own tribal lands. The tribes of early humanity raided each other’s settlements with little heed for racial unification or honor. Yet one tribe, known as the Arathi, saw that the trolls were becoming too great a threat to ignore. The Arathi wished to bring all of the tribes under its rule so that they could provide a unified front against the troll warbands.” (Item: Arathor and the Troll Wars)

“In time, the lords of Strom sought to move their estates to the lush northlands of Lordaeron and leave the arid lands of the south. The heirs of King Thoradin, the last descendants of the Arathi bloodline, argued that Strom should not be abandoned and thus incurred the displeasure of the greater citizenry, who were likewise eager to leave. The lords of Strom, seeking to find purity and enlightenment in the untamed north, decided to leave their ancient city behind. Far to the north of Dalaran, the lords of Strom built a new city-state which they named Lordaeron. The entire continent would take its name from this city-state. Lordaeron became a mecca for religious travelers and all those who sought inner peace and security.” [(Book: The Seven Human Kingdoms)](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/The_Seven_Kingdoms) ~1200 years before WC1

The Kingdom of Stormwind

The Kingdom of Stormwind and Lordaeron had great relations till the downfall of Lordaeron. Southshore was the first place that Lothar came before he went to the Capital City [Tides of Darkness]. “It was upon these shores of Lordaeron that were being savaged by small bands of orcs that Lothar landed. The armies of Lordaeron were the first to heed the call to arms issued by Sir Lothar and the people of Azeroth.” [WC2] Lordaeron was the reason the Orcs were pushed back to the Swamp of Sorrows and when Quel’Thalas, Strom, and Gilneas seceded from the Alliance, it was Stormwind, Kul Tiras, and the Ironforge Dwarves that stayed loyal and apart of the Alliance. [WC3]

There is a lone Champion of the Scarlet Crusade named who was of Azerothien descent and lost in the ruined city of Stratholme; Harthal Truesight who was a Knight of the Silver Hand. Without trying to speculate too hard and lose the point of this, Harthal Truesight could have potentially been from the refugees Lothar took on boat to Southshore and furthermore would have joined the Silver Hand sometime after Gavinrad the Dire, another fellow Azerothien, would have helped found as one of the First Five Silver Hand.

The Kingdom of Gilneas

Lordaeron was once the most powerful of the Seven Kingdoms, apart from Stormwind. On the Lordaeronian continent, the Kingdom of Lordaeron has the largest kingdom and population. The Kingdom of Gilneas was likewise considered one of the mightiest of the Seven Kingdoms. King Archibald boasted of having revolutionized Gilneas without begging Lordaeron for aid (LoHP). Gilneas likely had altercations with Lordaeron given that Lord Vincent Godfrey mentions how Gilneas had a militia for assaulting peripheral enemies on its borders (LoHP). the rising power of Gilneas likely sought to rival Lordaeron [WC2]. Gilneas not only bordered Lordaeron which owned the north in Silverpine, but also to the east in the Hillsbrad Foothills.

Gilneas held an almost adversarial relationship with the Kingdom of Lordaeron throughout King Genn’s reign and the time around the Second War. King Genn often stood on the opposing side of issues of the Alliance, including its creation, against King Terenas Menethil II. The Council of Six also believed that one of the reasons why King Genn sought for Lordaeron to act in the Second War was as a way to ensure that its military would weaken in the conflict (DotD, ch.1). King Terenas regarded King Genn as a shrewd politician and statesman for his ability to gain a voice in the Crisis of Alterac Succession, but mostly viewed King Genn’s ambitions as a nuisance (DotD, ch.6). Nevertheless, King Greymane’s entrance into the Alterac debate had a destabilizing effect on the political discourse surrounding Alterac’s future, which had previously been between Lordaeron and Stromgarde. But King Genn’s entrance into the Crisis ensured the inclusion of Kul Tiras, who sought to prevent possible naval rewards to Gilneas by a Gilneas-sympathetic Alterac (DotD, ch.1). Eventually, King Genn withdrew Gilneas from the Alliance as a result of the taxes King Terenas Menethil II imposed on the Seven Kingdoms for the funding the orc internment camps, Nethergarde Keep, and Stormwind. [WC3 GAME MANUAL]

During the Third War, Lordaeron requested aid from Gilneas to fight the Scourge. King Genn Greymane refused aid, despite pleas from both Prince Liam and Lord Darius Crowley, due to fears Genn held of the Plague spreading to Gilneas as well as confidence in the Greymane Wall (LoHP). In protest, Darius Crowley sent the Gilneas Brigade to assist the Alliance Expedition of Lordaeronian survivors under the command of Jaina Proudmoore and would launch a rebellion against the Gilnean crown (LoHP). When Lordaeron and its inhabitants fell to the Scourge, the undead armies of the Scourge besieged the Greymane Wall and spurred Genn Greymane to unleash the worgen from the Emerald Dream. The Banshee-Queen Sylvannas Windrunner would later draw upon Gilneas’s refusal to aid Lordaeron and letting its people die to the Scourge when motivating the Forsaken, many of whom were Lordaeronians in life, in their assault against Gilneas. Genn Greymane’s cold policy towards Lordaeron in the Third War also served as an explicit contributing factor in King Varian Wrynn’s reluctance to admit Gilneas back into the Alliance at the Darnassus Summit.

There are no named Gilneans in the Scarlet Crusade’s ranks and it is not until Dragonflight that the Scarlets attempted to occupy Gilneas.

Quel’Thalas, Strom, and Gilneas seceded from the Alliance [WC3] and the Greymane Wall could have only been more flame to the fire. Interestingly enough, though, in more modern history, in the Battle for Azeroth the Scarlet Brotherhood wanted to use the “enemy of my enemy is my friend” regard to get the Gilnean Worgen to help beat the Forsaken out of Lordaeron, then to turn upon the Worgens and annihilate them that Lordaeron be only for the Living. (Item: The Cursed Old Wolf) This would change more recently as of Dragonflight where presumably the survivors of the Fenris Isle siege upon the Undercity by Scarlets was beaten back and they may have gone into Gilneas after the fact where a unified Alliance under Genn Greymane and Calia Menethil their beloved and rightful queen who’s undead beat them out of Gilneas.

The Magocracy of Dalaran

Dalaran was geographically one of Lordaeron’s closest sister kingdoms and where Jaina was being tutored who was close to Arthas, the Lordaeronian Prince. Janice of House Barov was also an excellent student of Dalaran who was a Lordaeronian citizen. “Dalaran is a small, magocratic nation ruled by a conclave of Wizards known as the Kirin Tor. The capital of Dalaran is the Violet Citadel at Cross Island. This nexus of supernatural forces is home to the four great towers that are sanctum to many of the land’s greatest sorcerers. The Kirin Tor are strong supporters of the Alliance and to its cause have devoted the knowledge contained within their voluminous libraries as well as the power of their awesome magiks” [WC2] and continued to give support to the Alliance as Antonidas promised of the Kirin Tor after Quel’Thalas, Gilneas, and Strom all seceded. [WC3] During Vanilla WoW, we also see the Ambermill and Dalaran Crater Dalaranians who remained loyal to the Grand Alliance and fought against the Forsaken at the Lordamere Internment Camp. Some elves also stayed behind during the Third War and were sorceresses of the Kirin Tor [WC3]. Scarlet Battle Magi are also originally from the Kirin Tor [Dark Factions RPG Books].

There are two Scarlets mentioned directly as Citizens of Dalaran; Invar One-Arm and Yana Bloodspear who were Chief Assassins.

The Kingdom of Kul Tiras

The naval kingdom of Kul Tiras was one of Lordaeron’s closest allies when Quel’Thalas, Strom, and Gilneas all ceded from the Alliance.[WC3] “Before the First War, the far ranging merchant ships of Kul Tiras made it the most prosperous nation in the known world. When the Orcs began to raid the coastal settlements of Lordaeron, Admiral Proudmoore took it upon himself to construct an armada of warships. At the behest of his long time friend Anduin Lothar, Proudmoore has pledged the assistance of his merchant-nation to the Alliance.” [WC2] “The tall, slender man with the weathered skin and the green naval uniform was of course Admiral Daelin Proudmoore. He ruled Kul Tiras, but it was his position as commander of the world’s largest, fiercest navy that made even Terenas treat him as an equal.” [ToD] This meant that the great capacity of Admiral Daelin Proudmoore’s navy as larger and fiercer than Lordaeron’s made the Kul Tirans respectable and a great necessity.

The Kul Tirans who supported Daelin and despised Jaina would have likely of made for great Scarlets. “The only “Alliance” outpost in the area, soldiers loyal to Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, father of Jaina Proudmoore, man Tiragarde (much like Northwatch Hold in the Barrens). Since Daelin’s death, they have continued their crusade against the Horde. While Jaina does not approve of their actions, the majority of the Alliance accepts the dangerous philosophy of these troops. [Some] view them as being almost as fanatical and stupid as the Scarlet Crusade.” [Lands of Mystery RPG Books] Those who would have made sense as Kul Tirans would have been like the Theramore Deserters in Theramore and wouldn’t have respected the treaty between Alliance and Horde forces on Kalimdor.

Barean Westwind was also the Grand Admiral of the Scarlet Fleet who’s statue is in the Hall of Champion at the Scarlet Monastery and is the same corpse that got possessed by Mal’ganis that was the Grand Admiral of the Scarlet Onslaught.

The Kingdom of Stromgarde

As one of the Seven Human Kingdoms, Stromgarde came into the Alliance of Lordaeron. The Alterac Crisis began to form a gap between Lordaeron and Stromgarde. King Thoras Trollbane had climbed the Alterac Mountain Passes and convinced General Hath, the commander of Alterac’s military, to protect the mountain passes where the Orcs were truly coming from, and Terenas was very appreciative as this action saved Capital City from being attacked. [Tides of Darkness] “Now that peace had come [however], Thoras Trollbane had begun to demand that, for its sacrifices, Stromgarde should receive as just due the entire eastern portion of its treacherous former neighbor [Alterac]." [Day of the Dragon] This caused a great friction between Lordaeron and Stromgarde which was further dampened when Stromgarde, Quel’Thalas, and Gilneas would all secede from the Alliance. [WC3 Game Manual]

Orman of Stromgarde is named as one of the known Scarlet Champions who has a statue erected to him in the Hall of Champions who is Stromic. Captain Nials sent Alliance adventurers on behalf of the Stromgarde Militia that Danath was the Captain of before [WC2 Game Manual] during the Cataclysm to help Joseph the Awakened and his Alliance backed Scarlet Renegades because Stromgarde Paladins once used the Monastery for a training ground until the Scarlet Crusade became zealous. [[Quest: The Scarlet Crusade]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/The_Scarlet_Monastery_(quest))

The Kingdom of Alterac

The nations of Lordaeron and Alterac were close neighbors who had been a part of the Seven Human Kingdoms to form from Arathor. At the time of the Second War, however, with the treachery of Aiden Perenolde, he was put under house arrest. King Terenas even debated annexing Alterac into Lordaeron. Martial law was declared upon Alterac. Terenas Menethil II even planned to marry Calia to Prestor when she came of age.[Day of the Dragon] “Alterac is the weakest of the Human nations and [was] only a minor contributor of troops and equipment to the Alliance.” [WC2] Some might feel an animosity for Alterac’s betrayal, but Terenas Menethil II thought General Hath to be a great man despite his king’s shrewd ways. [ToD] Alterac went under martial law and Aiden Perenolde was it under house arrest. [DotD] It’s interesting to note that while Aliden Perenolde was the leader of the Syndicate of Alterac, he cursed his father for ruining them. “Damn it, Father! Two years I’ve spent trying to overcome the stigma you’ve cast upon our family name. Two years! You stupid, selfish bastard, you’ve ruined everything!” [BtDP] He also would inevitably die wearing the Alliance tabard his father disdained so much for a non-aggression pact with the Orcs. Terenas wanted to annex Alterac into its own fold and put it under martial law which is why the Silver Hand Knights came to Strahnbrad’s defense, an Alterac settlement, when the Blackrock Orcs were kidnapping innocent Alteraci villagers to sacrifice to their demonic overlords. [[Warcraft 3 Mission 1: Defense of Strahnbrad](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/The_Defense_of_Strahnbrad_(WC3_Human))]

Valea Twinblades is a Warrior of the Scarlet Crusade who was last seen in the Eastern Plaguelands and an Alteraci worthy of great veneration amongst the Scarlet Crusade enough so that her statue is erected in the Halls of Champions in the Scarlet Monastery.

The Vishas family also lived in Alterac just underneath the Perenolde Manor on the Misty Shore where Grandpa Vishas and his wife Nancy Vishas lived waiting for his return from the Scarlet Monastery.

The Nation of Theramore

There may have been strained relations as Jaina took many of Lordaeron’s citizens with her. Those of Hillsbrad did not go as they did not see it having any merit or benefits to their current lives and most survivors of Stratholme journeyed with Jaina to Kalimdor; the Lordaeron Corps and Brigade are both named factions of Lordaeronians who would found Theramore. [LoC] [WC3]

While she is technically a part of the Kingdom of Theramore, [Mizzy Pistonhammer](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Mizzy_Pistonhammer), a gnome, sent adventurers to the Scarlet Monastery to help Joseph the Awakaned and his Scarlet Renegades take back the Monastery and hit the Forsaken where it hurts. [[Quest: Just Close Enough]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Just_Close_Enough)

The Kingdom of Ironforge

The Dwarves of Ironforge had great ties with the Lordaeronians and inevitably (or perhaps indirectly) the Scarlet Crusade. Firstly, the Dwarves of Ironforge would become the Stormpikes and in the Hillsbrad Foothils where the Stormpikes are, there are Alliance Guards who wear Lordaeron tabards alongside their Stormpike allies. Ironforge also stayed loyal to the Alliance when Quel’Thalas, Strom, and Gilneas all seceded. [WC3]

Next, when the Ashbringer was formed, although the orb was purified by almost all future Scarlet Crusaders who at that time were Silver Hand Knights (Isillen who would become Grand Inquisitor, Arcanist Doan, and Brigitte Abbendis’s father). Mangi himself forged it with his emotions and prophesied it would be used to shatter Frostmourne after he thought until Wrath of the Lich King that Arthas as the Lich King had murdered his brother Muradin in cold blood (Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne)[ASH Comics]. While Highlord Mograine of the Silver Hand did not shatter the Frostmourne blade as the Ashbringer was plunged into his heart by his own son Renault Mograine [ASH] it was actually Tirion as Highlord of the Argent Crusade. [Raid: Icecrown Citadel]

An Explorer’s League Librarian, Mae Paledust, sent adventurers to the Scarlet Monastery to retrieve the Mythology of the Titans book. During this she mentioned the Scarlet Monastery was used as “a seminary for Paladins-in-training. Once a stronghold of the Light, it fell into the hands of the crazed zealots of the Scarlet Crusade. The Crusade believed their goal a noble one: to purify the land of the undead plague. But insanity tainted their plight and now they stand enemies to all. The corrupt halls of the Monastery are no place for such a historical treasure,” which could be common knowledge and sentiment that the Dwarves share now that the Scarlets are xenophobic but were once a noble cause. [wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Mythology_of_the_Titans_(quest)]

“Scarlet Crusaders are predominately human, with only the occasional dwarf or high elf — they hate other races and blame them for everything bad as well.” [LoC]

There are also statues of presumably Bronzebeard or a Stormpike Dwarf Mountain King in the Scarlet Monastery at the Halls of Champions: Dorgar Stoenbrow, Lord of the Red Caverns. While it does not say where these Red Caverns are, it might have been the Alterac Mountains he was last seen at and is presumed dead. Thus, Scarlet Dwarves could have existed at the beginning although in the Ashbringer Magma books it says that when Tyronsus Maxwell wanted to use the help of elves and dwarves, Renault Mograine amongst the others such as the Abbendis family were very human supremacist and racist and said the humans were the only Light blessed race to fight the Scourge. [ASH]

The Kingdom of Gnomeregan

While it does not say directly that the Scarlet Crusaders felt any type of way towards the Gnomes, “the Gnomes of Khaz Modan have long offset their lack of physical strength with ingenuity and daring; as members of the Alliance, they have continued to display their talents by inventing and piloting the unbelievable Flying Machine.” [WC2]. We now know that the Gnomes could not send full support to the Alliance because they were dealing with the Troggs and Leper Gnomes and lost much of their mechanical city, Gnomeregan. [CoA]

The Kingdom of Quel’Thalas

After the Second War, Quel’Thalas was the first to secede from the Alliance stating that the Alliance failed to save some of their forests which were burned down by the Horde and Dragons but Terenas tried to remind them that without the Alliance they’d have been goners completely. Shortly thereafter, Gilneas and Strom seceded due to the costs of maintaining the internment camps. [WC3]

It is known that Fellari Swiftarrow was a Ranger Captain of the Scarlet Crusade and a Citizen of Quel’Thalas along with Aerellas Fireleaf, the High Wizard who both have statues in the Halls of Champions.

“Scarlet Crusaders are predominately human, with only the occasional dwarf or high elf — they hate other races and blame them for everything bad as well.” [LoC]

The other side of this coin is that the Blood Knights are their great adversaries. The Blood Knights took tainted Tyr’s Hand Holy Water and used it to extinguish the Eternal Flame of the Chapel of Alonsus in Stratholme during the Burning Crusade [[Quest: True Masters of the Light](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/True_Masters_of_the_Light)].

The Horde

Any Scarlets have a great hate for the Horde and this must be obvious as their greatest adversaries are the Forsaken who joined the Horde. “The drumbeat of war still sounds on the wind in eastern Azeroth. For some, such as the Scarlet Crusade, the Third War has yet to truly end.” [LoC]

The Night Elves of Darnassus

Although the Night Elves would have never been given much thought from the zealous, xenophobic, and human supremacist Scarlet Crusader, that all changed with the Scarlet Renegade rebellion. Shandris Feathermoon, General of the Sentinel Army, personally sent Night Elven reinforcements to help take the Scarlet Monastery as a headquarter right at Sylvanas’s footstep and that Joseph the Awakened was appreciative to know he was supported by her “massive army”. [[Quest: Pitting Madness Against Madness](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Pitting_Madness_Against_Madness)]

The Draenei of the Exodar

There has been minimal interaction between the Exodar Draenei and Scarlets and it is not known what their stance would be.

The Pandaren

It is interesting that while there is not much about even the Draenei of the Exodar, there is a sliver of intigue between the Pandaren and Scarlet Crusade. The Adventure Guide says for Brother Korloff: “Brother Korloff first learned of the monk’s deadly arts from pandaren ambassadors as they journeyed through Azeroth. When the crusader demonstrated this martial style to his superiors, they unanimously ordered Korloff to train an entire generation of initiates in the ways of the monk.” This can only mean that Pandaren ambassadors came as monks to teach him the way of the Pandaren Monk even though they were human supremacist and xenophobic at that time of the Mists of Pandaria.

V. ECONOMY

----------------------------------

During the last century of the Seven Kingdoms period, Lordaeron’s economy would have came from a plethora of different sources. They had mines which were the staple of affording Lordaeron’s costly wars with the Orcs in the Second and Third Wars. During the Second War’s Aftermath, King Terenas II asked for the Alliance to contribute taxes to rebuilding Stormwind’s infrastructure and led to Gilneas and Strom seceding as well as the fact of the costly internment camps.

Fishing would have been a big deal such at the coastal town of Southshore. Stratholme in Warcraft 3 had a harbor. All cities are seen with bankers so it can be imagined that the Capital City would have had bankers and an auction house like the Forsaken do who were its inhabitants when they were alive. Agriculture was crucial and this would have also of been the downfall of the Lordaeron kingdom as Andorhal was the bread basket of Lordaeron and where the plague also started from Kel’thuzad in Warcraft 3. “Once Lordaeron’s agricultural center, the Western Plaguelands was one of the first to fall to the Scourge. Since that time, the land has wasted and blackened, the trees have fallen to corruption and the undead have tightened their grasp.” [LoC]

No matter how great the economic prosperity of Lordaeron was, there was a great downfall from the Scourge of Lordaeron. “Barter is particularly widespread in the north these days, where many of the trade routes have been completely disrupted by the attacks of the Scourge. Those few villages still hanging on in isolated glades and valleys survive through the barter system; one person will raise chickens, another weaves roughspun cloth, a third grows wheat, and all trade their excess to one another. Travelers through these areas often find it hard to step into this cycle of survival unless they have something to trade of exceptional rarity in the area. [One could make an] entire journey through Alterac and the Plaguelands into Tirisfal carrying a pack filled with nothing but fishing hooks, whetstones, and candles.” [LoC]

Currency

Scarlets uses the gold standard for a monetary system, as do most political nations of Azeroth. The Lordaeronian currency consists of minted gold, silver, and copper coins. One hundred copper coins equal a silver piece, and one hundred silver coins equal a gold piece. Although Lordaeron ikely minted their own currency, there is no reference to any given name of their official currency or coinage. They would have been minted with King Terenas II’s head. “Coins minted in Stromgarde long ago, or in Lordaeron before it was overrun by the damnable Scourge, are becoming increasingly rare, and some sentimental merchants will actually treat these coins as though they were more valuable than normal. I know of a merchant in the south whose family was lost to the undead during the war, and he accepts coins minted in Lordaeron as though they were five Stormwind pieces.” [LoC]

Economic Policy

It does not exactly state what Lordaeron’s economic policy was prior to the Scourge of Lordaeron, but it is known that when Medivh was in a coma, “Azeroth enjoyed a time of relative peace. However, that did not mean the world was safe. Conflict was a daily occurrence. Tribes battled with tribes, villages squabbled with villages, and kingdoms spied on kingdoms. Yet by and large, Azeroth’s inhabitants were prosperous. In the Eastern Kingdoms, humans engaged in rigorous trade with dwarves, gnomes, and high elves. Some nations, like Lordaeron, acted as regional leaders and trendsetters. They mediated disagreements between smaller kingdoms and used their strong militaries to impose order over the land” (World of Warcraft Chronicle Volume 2).

They evidently had maritime trade and Lordaeron even had a fleet. Thrall stole three ships docked at an Alliance Naval Base in the Hillsbrad Foothills. Arthas Menethil took ships from the Lordaeron Navy to Northrend and had them burned by mercenaries he hired who he then turned around and had killed. [Warcraft 3]

It does not say what exactly the economy of Southshore and other townships were, but for Southshore, the Syndicate wanted to parley to give a magical spell to help battle the murlocs that involved “trading this new magic for some concessions. Magistrate Maleb does not trust the Syndicate, but the murlocs have been preying on incoming ships and damaging Southshore’s economy.” [LoC] So there was some type of economy that Southshore had that could have included ships that was being interrupted.

Southshore was a maritime fishing town and has a dock that promotes this. “Southshore is Hillsbrad’s mercantile center. Southshore’s small privateer fleet keeps the waterways clear, allowing ships to dock at the town’s harbor and keep the economy strong.” [LoC] It might be that privateers and private ships helped combat the small time pirating problems and Kul Tiras’s larger navy focus on the grander scale.

The Scarlet Fleet is noteworthy as it existed and had a few named ships. Abbendis took the Sinner’s Folly to Northrend and Barean Westwind was the Grand Admiral of the Fleet in life but it is not known to what capacity or size the Fleet was although it could have had some Frigates. [Item: Diary of the High General]

The central Lordaeronian government held a strong guiding hand in the development of Lordaeron’s economy and industrial development in foreign trade. Trade tariffs on imported goods formed an important source of revenue. Grain could have been a great commodity to export and towns such as Andorhal were rich grain centers that are also notorious for where the plague started. These grains would have been distributed to the local townships as well such as Andorhal’s plagued grain that went to Stratholme that was the culprit of the Culling of Stratholme [CoT: Culling of Stratholme Dungeon]. Taxes were gathered from the Alliance during the Aftermath of the Second War and used to fund the reconstruction of Stormwind City [RotLK] and was why the Quel’dorei, Gilneans, and Stromsmen seceded from the Alliance. [WC3]

Lordaeron suffered relatively minor economic damage as a direct result of the Second War, which made Lordaeron one of the strongest post-war economies. King Terenas Menethil II of Lordaeron surmised that Gilneas interfered in the Crisis of Alterac Succession in order to procure favored status through [Alterac’s] many mountain passes (BtDP, ch.7).

Heavy Alliance taxation by King Terenas Menethil II of Lordaeron to support the rebuilding of Stormwind and maintaining the orc interment camps and Nethergarde Keep, however, was nothing but a financial drain on Gilneas’s, Stromgarde’s, and Quel’Thalas’s economies (LoHP; HoW:TAS). This heavy taxation with little reciprocal gain spurred Genn Greymane to cut economic ties from the other kingdoms and withdraw its membership from the Alliance. Gilneas closed its borders and ports, which marked a period of stagnation, if not decline, for the Gilnean economy due to the end of foreign trade, revenue generated from its exports, and trade tariffs on imports.

Given the rise of the peasant to the urban middle class with the degradation of the nobility and their powers granted by their titles, [Alliance Player’s Guide, RPG Book] the everyday citizen’s life in Lordaeron leading up to the Scourge of Lordaeron was as the most powerful nation-state of all the human cultures and nationalities. This would all take a violent twist with the Scourge of Lordaeron and the rapid decline of civilization in the Northlands and the likes of Andorhal, Stratholme, Cinderhome, Darrowshire, Corin’s Crossing, and so many former hubs of great life and prosperity speaks volumes of just how damaging the Scourging of Lordaeron was.

Natural Resources

Lordaeron is bountiful in natural resources. The native resources have not been exhausted. In the Second War, oil and lumber and gold were in abundance that fueled and funded the needs of the Alliance as a whole.

Precious Metals & Minerals: There are many different mines that were around Lordaeron. From the Azurelode Mine that was comfortably situated away from Southshore, and was even home to Azurite. In New Avalon, Havenshire Mine was a place where Scarlet Miners mined precious gemstones that the Death Knight hid inside a cart of to get access to Scarlet Fleet Cannons.

Lumber: Lordaeron contains vast forestlands throughout its territories, including the northern portions of Silverpine Forest. The Scarlet Crusade had a Lumber Mill at Hearthglen, New Avalon (the Scarlet Enclave) and thus harvested it at such a rate it had to be manufactured into useable lumber. The farms to outposts and watch towers the Scarlet Crusade uses all would have taken lumber or timber to build.

Agriculture: Farming communities are the heart and soul of Lordaeron. Grain was in abundance at Andorhal and the reason the plague started to begin with. The Felstone Field, Dalson’s Farm, Mender’s Stead, Wirthing Haunt, Gahrron’s Withering are five different farms in just the Western Plaguelands and that doesn’t even scrape the surface. The Solliden Farmstead likely produced infamous Tirisfal Pumpkins that was such a necessity to feed the Scarlet Crusade that the Scarlet Palisade was built on top of it at the Cataclysm and was one of the few Scarlet strongholds that survived the Risen and Argent encroachment that destroyed the Scarlet Crusade’s presence in the Plaguelands.

Farms: Solliden Farmstead, scattered throughout the Scarlet Enclave

Fishing: Considering the abundance of water surrounding Lordaeron, fishing may have served as an important livelihood for many Lordaeronians. This changed for the Lordamere and Lordamere Lakes, however, because “in years past, the lake served as a source of fresh water and fish for Lordaeron’s kingdoms. Now, Lordamere’s isles are infested with monsters and its shores polluted with undead filth.” [LoC] There are also fishers seen at Southshore at the dock in the Old Hillsbrad Foothills instance.

Winery: Terrence Fallrook is the owner of the Fallrock Estate in the Hillsbrad Foothills and its winery. [Legends Volume 4: Blood Runs Thicker]

Harbors: King’s Harbor was where the Sinner’s Folly was in the Scarlet Enclave and home to the Scarlet Fleet before it set sail to Northrend as the Scarlet Onslaught. Caer Darrow had a dock. So did Andorhal on the Alliance side. Vishas’s home on the Misty Shore in the Alterac Mountains had a dock too.

Livestock

Scarlet farmers also raise a small assortment of livestock. Only four types of livestock exist in Scarlets, though there may be further ones that are not included in-game but are referenced in the actual lore.

Sheep: Flocks of grazing sheep are found throughout the Culling of Stratholme.

Horses: In the Hillsbrad Foothills is the only region where wild horses can be located on the Lordaeron continent. Hearthglen had mustangs. Havenshire had colts, mares, and stallions which a Stable Master protected.

Pigs: Several food items suggest that Scarlets also raise pigs. Though no live pigs are seen in the game, many houses contain roast boars or pigs. Their heads are hung up on mantles.

Chickens: There are several chickens around New Avalon. Chickens were also raised to be traded or bartered for other items farmers had less a plenty of. [LoC]

Maritime Trade

Lordaeron would have had a great maritime trade. Other than the fact that the Kul Tirans and their Grand Admiral Daelin, “who’s mighty fleets patrolled the trade lanes hunting pirates and marauders, maintain[ing] order on the high seas” [WC3] there were various imports that would have helped put Lordaeron on the forefront of the map. “The [Lordamere] lake borders five separate regions and provides an untapped means of transport between these areas.” [LoC] As a result, with quick access to the Hillsbrad Foothills, Alterac, Silverpine, Tirisfal, and into Dalaran, these would have made access to trade goods quite easy. Grain likely would have been exported out to the other Alliance nations with ease. Lordaeron had trade lanes that Kul Tiras patrolled [[WC3] which speaks to the extent of how great their maritime trade was. This likely was how King Terenas was able “to rebuild [Lordaeron] and bring aid to the remaining nations of the Alliance” as well as help the “southern kingdom of Azeroth grew prosperous again” [WC3]. Southshore was also notorious for where the first Azerothiens arrived following the First War where Lothar was and therefore would have been a great in between the Kingdoms of Azeroth and Lordaeron [Tides of Darkness] which would have been patrolled by Southshore’s privateer fleet. [LoC]

Religious Capital

Lordaeron is depicted and described as an atypically spiritual human kingdom. The only known kingdom that would upon crumbling be the founding location of the first Crusade ever known in the history of Warcraft: the Scarlet Crusade. The Church of the Holy Light was first in Lordaeron some 2800 years ago. [CoA]. In the Second War, “the holy writ commandeth that the whole armor of rightousness be worn in the war against evil, Alonsus Faol - Abbot of the now destroyed Northshire Abbey - convinced the ecclesiastic ministers of Lordaeron to gird their priests and followers alike with weapons of war. As the guardians took up swords of light to defend the heavens, so must the holy men of earth be prepared to combat the dark tide that was quickly approaching from the south. The armies of Lordaeron are deeply religious and are driven by the belief that humanity must stand steadfast against the blasphemous onslaught of the Horde.”[WC2] This speaks to the fact that Lordaeron is very holy and the heart of religious prosperity since the Seven Human Kingdoms first came to exist and Lordaeron became a religious mecca. “Lordaeron became a mecca for religious travelers and all those who sought inner peace and security.” [Object: The Seven Human Kingdoms]

“Stormwind had been a towering, imposing city, filled with spires and terraces, carved from strong stone to resist the wind but polished to a mirror sheen. But in its own way Capital City was equally lovely. Not that Capital City was the same as Stormwind. It was not as tall, for one. But what it lacked in height it made up for in elegance. It sat on a rise above the north shore of Lordamere Lake, gleaming all in white and silver. It did not glitter as Stormwind had, but it glowed somehow, as if the sun were rising from its graceful buildings instead of beating down upon them. It seemed serene, peaceful, almost holy.” [Tides of Darkness] - Description of Capital City

Water: WIP.

Transportation: For terrestrial travel, Lordaeron relies upon horses. Horses are the primary means of personal travel across land. You can see the paved roads and cobblestone that go through out Tirisfal to the Western and Eastern Plaguelands. For those who have less capabilities to traverse, they might have used their farming plow horses like Southshore did when they gave a plow horse to Khadgar and Lothar to get to the Capital City on. [Tides of Darkness] The Scarlet Crusade came to use gryphons. Scarlet Gryphons and Scarlet Gryphon Riders were visible at the Scarlet Enclave and again the Onslaught is seen using them with their Harbor Guards that patrol around on gryphonback.

Textiles: Lordaeronians may have been a major manufacturer of textiles. Lordaeronians prominently features numerous flocks of grazing sheep, more so than other livestock, across its core territory. Wool may have been widely in demand among the Seven Kingdoms. The growth of textiles frequently accompanied and spurred industrialization. Many Lordaeronian homes also include yarn and looms and textile shops were visible in the Culling of Stratholme.

Firearms and Artillery: Firearms are a great commodity within the Scarlet Crusade and beyond. Crimson Riflemen are apart of the Crimson Legion and at the Charred Outpost where there are dead Scarlets, there is a blunderbuss rack. Scarlet Cannons are specifically used at the living side of Stratholme and were in the Scarlet Monastery used by Scarlet Cannoneers.

Scarlets also employs the land-use of artillery to the exclusion of other siege armaments frequently depicted in other human civilizations (e.g. ballistae, catapults, etc.).

VI. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

----------------------------------

The Lordaeron royal family probably gave strong patronage to the reconstruction of roadways and infrastructure of Lordaeron as well as its spiritual revitalization as the mecca of religion for the Church and great cultural surge that would have occurred post-Second War as the strongest, largest, and top economical kingdom of the seven human kingdoms.

Arcane Arts

When it comes to the Arcane Arts, for most of the Scarlet Crusade, this was a rarer sight but nevertheless powerful in its own right. “While most associate the Scarlet Crusade with the decline of the Knights of the Silver Hand, members of the organization come from many different backgrounds — the Scarlet Crusade includes former members of the Kirin Tor and other arcane spellcasters. Battle magi are some of the deadliest members of the Scarlet Crusade; their knowledge of arcane magic is tempered with zeal and training in martial arms. In combat, powerful battle magi might charge into a unit of Scourge creatures and lay it to waste with incendiary magic, and then obliterate any survivors with ordinary or enchanted steel.”. [Dark Factions] Arcanist Doan was both a Knight of the Silver Hand and the Arcanist of the Scarlet Crusade. [ASHBRINGER COMICS] Almost all human mages, regardless of national affiliation, received their formal arcane training from Dalaran prior to the Age of Chaos. An exception is how evidently Beve Perenolde went to Capital City to receive her training [LoC] . Jandice Barov was a great illusion master and trained at Dalaran City. Jaina was another example and she was from Kul Tiras. There were Lordaeron Mages (NPC: Lordaeron Mage) and examples of Mage Towers in Lordaeron (Hearthglen Mage Tower, CoT Durnholde Mage Tower). Arellas Fireleaf was a unique example amongst the Scarlet Crusade as a high ranking member, the only known High Wizard, and also being from Quel’Thalas (a High Elf). “Scarlet Battle magi are among the rarest of their order and are highly respected. The overwhelming majority of battle magi are trained in Tyr’s Hand and the newly founded Scarlet Monastery, and then sent to the locations where they are most needed.” [Dark Factions]

The Dark Arts: Practicing the fel magic of warlocks was likely illegal, as with the rest of the Seven Kingdoms. Warlocks, nevertheless, existed on the furthest fringes of Scarlet society. Few examples exist, but Scarlet Augurs in the Scarlet Monastery cast Shadow Bolts. Mataus the Wrathcaster is another known Warlock.

Known Mages: WIP.

Known Warlocks: Mataus the Wrathcaster (who casted Curse of Agony, Drain Life, Shadow Bolt, Shadowflame, and in Vanilla WoW, only Warlocks could get his quests for Naxxramas items)

Medicine & Alchemical Science

In Lordaeron, priests and paladins commonly heal the sick and wounded such as in churches [WC2]. In rural agrarian communities, those capable of using bandages may serve similarly as local healers such as Scarlet Medics who were in the Scarlet Enclave helping out the Scarlet Peasants are they chopped down lumber. Specialized professions (i.e., doctors, trauma surgeons, physicians, nurses, and medics) also administer medical functions of healing, first aid, and surgery. Although none of these specialized professions are seen in the Scarlet Crusade as they are amongst the Forsaken who were mostly Lordaeronians in life, they are common enough across the civilizations of the Eastern Kingdoms to warrant their probable existence.

Hospitals: WIP.

Alchemy: Although it not very known to what extent Alchemy would have taken place in Lordaeron or the Scarlet Crusade, there are great examples of the everyday life of Lordaeronians you can get an idea of from the Culling of Stratholme and Old Hillsbrad Foothills. In the Culling, there is an unoccupied Stratholme Farm that has a bunch of alchemist equipment in it from a mortar and pestle to potions and trinkets related to alchemy like ingredients that are hung across the wall.

Engineering

Lordaeron was never one of the most technologically advanced nations of the Seven Kingdoms. It definitely trailed behind the technological superiority of dwarves, goblins, and gnomes. In their technological approaches, Lordaeronians share much in common with the dwarves of Ironforge and Gnomes of Khaz Modan. The reason is that “the Gnomes of Khaz Modan have long offset their lack of physical strength with ingenuity and daring. As members of the Alliance, they have continued to display their talents by inventing” [WC2] and thus much of the technology that was used by Lordaeron and potentially Scarlets were the Gnome and Dwarven technology. Such an example is the setback of the lack of Steam Tanks that are seen after Warcraft 3 with the Alliance. Scarlets seem to only have retained cannons and blunderbusses and technology of less sophistication; there is no sight of gyrocopters either. Scarlets prefer practical applications of technology that will benefit the livelihood and protection of the Crusade. Scarlets such as the Master Cannoneer Willey Hopebreaker have also wholly incorporated cannons, firearms, and explosives into their military forces.

Technological advancement among the Seven Kingdoms expanded rapidly after the formation Grand Alliance. Liberal trade and cultural cross-pollination between constituent members boosted the technological development of human nations due to dwarven crafters and gnomish engineers. Stormwind in particular grew in technological prowess due to the direct aid from dwarves and gnomes in the rebuilding of their capital city. Alliance engineering, however, is almost entirely the purview of gnomes and dwarves, with generally minimal human involvement.

—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE SCARLET COMPENDIUM

VII. LIFE AND CULTURE

----------------------------------

Architecture & Housing

“Human architecture is generally simpler than that of the dwarves, which is understandable since they build their cities completely outside
Some modern human architecture is a blend of dwarven and high elven designs, which isn’t surprising. This is especially true in Lordaeron, where even the secluded elves of Quel’Thalas would often make appearances to trade.” [LoC]

Unique to the Scarlet Crusade is their construction. In the Scarlet Monastery, we see various unique architectural designs for the Scarlet Crusade: a Training Grounds, Huntsman’s Cloister, Athenaeum, Gallery of Treasures, Hall of Champions, Footman’s Armory,Honor’s Tomb, Forlorn Cloister, Chapel Gardens, Crusader’s Chapel, Chamber of Atonement (Vishas), [The Scarlet Basilica](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Scarlet_Basilica) (Tyr’s Hand),

A cloister means “a place, especially a monastery or convent, devoted to religious seclusion”. An Athenaeum is “a place, such as a library, where printed materials are available for reading.”. For the Chamber of Atonement, atonement means: “Amends or reparation made for an injury or wrong; expiation”. A Basilica is a Roman Empire building that got adopted by the Catholic Church and it is interesting to note that Praetorians (another Roman derivative name) of Scarlets protect at Tyr’s Hand.

CITIZENS:

The Scarlet Enclave was supposed to be a “Scarlet paradise”, evidenced by the Citizens of New Avalon saying, "so much for the Scarlet “paradise”!" Evidently they were promised “Safety” and “security” for settling at the Scarlet Enclave. [(NPC: Citizen of New Avalon)](wowhead. com/npc=28942/citizen-of-new-avalon) This is further backed up in Lands of Conflict. “Settlers with the skill, boldness and strength of arms to withstand the challenges and dangers of the wild may find that from crude beginnings mighty empires can be born — or reclaimed. In the north, the Scarlet Crusade is always searching for settlers willing to make a stand on the edge of the Plaguelands and reclaim a part of humanity’s ancestral lands.” [LoC]

Unique only to the Scarlet Enclave, there was a type of high class club called the Haute Club that required a Membership Card with “Fine Dining for the Finest”.[ (Item: Haute Club Membership Card)]

Although it is not exactly stated, it could have been some [Fras Siabi’s Premium Tobacco] or some type of Lordaeronian tobacco they were smoking in these pipes.

> Architectural Style: Lordaeronian architecture is of the same general design as most of the other human nations. This is true of human farms and more.

Building Materials: Scarlets use timber for constructing most building wooden house floors and frames, with either stone, typically fieldstone, or brick for walling. Fieldstones are also often used for simple country walls and garden borders. Stones are more common building materials in larger constructions, such as in the Scarlet Monastery which are then tiled with red roofing or Tyr’s Hand with the abbey and cathedral. This is noticed as well in New Hearthglen or the Onslaught Harbor in Northrend for the Scarlet Onslaught as well.

Class and Status

Clothing & Fashions: It is interesting to note that while the Lordaeronians wear a plethora of different styles, “Hillsbrad’s
locals dress in white, Lordaeron’s traditional color.” [LoC] ] This is the case for Scarlet Crusaders as well but taken to another level. “As they wander the blasted wastes, the undead creatures who call the Plaguelands home have learned to scan the horizon continually for the crimson garb of the Scarlet Crusade. Scarlet Crusaders come from many vocations — warrior, priest, wizard, scout — but all have one obsession: the complete and utter destruction of the plagueborn creatures who have conquered and occupied their ancestral homelands. Whether a red robe, a red tabard or red lacquered armor, a Scarlet Crusader wears the bright color as a brazen declaration that the red blood of the living still flows in her veins and as a beacon calling her undead foes to battle.” [LoC]

Cuisine

The people of Lordaeron have simple cuisine that suits their simple tastes.

Food: WIP.

Drinks: WIP, Lordaeron Lambic,

Education

Lordaeron may have placed an emphasis on the education of its citizens. Books are commonly found in most Lordaeron households, and many Lordaeronians are presumed to possess literacy. Schools are known to exist among the Seven Kingdoms. Miss Danna of Stormwind, for example, is a schoolmistress. Crillian was the headmaster of “the Academy”? at Stormwind (The Legend of Stalvan). One of the most infamous school scenarios is that Beve Perenolde “was sent to Lordaeron City to study magic as a young woman, but left the school voluntarily” [LoC] which could mean that Lordaeron City had its own magical school separate from Dalaran. Furthermore, specifically for Scarlets, it is interesting to note when they received the lashings at the Scarlet Enclave Death Knight starting zone, some of the Scarlets being tortured for information would say, “Argh
 The pain
The pain is almost as unbearable as the lashings I received in grammar school when I was but a child” which lends itself to suggest that Scarlet Crusaders could have went to a grammar school at child but presumably when Lordaeron was not yet Scarlet.

Language

Lordaeronians primarily speak Common, which is a shared trade language that unites the Seven Kingdoms. Lordaeron may have its own respective Lordaeronian language while Common acts as the primary language for the Seven Kingdoms. Early humans shared a language that included a writing system, as they “would occasionally take to gathering around a fire whilst trying to read from scrolls telling of ancient heroes and leaders”? (Ask CDev Round #1). It is unknown what ancient tongue the Common language and script is derived, though it likely traces its origins to the vrykul and titan languages.

Alphabet: Lordaeronians also uses the Common alphabet. Some of the symbols used in the Lordaeron crest, such as the ‘L’ that the Lordaeronians and Scarlets use, are the best example.

Dialects: Although the people of the Eastern Kingdoms talk of a Lordearonian dialect, there are probably numerous variant regional dialects within any given human kingdom.

Secondary Languages: Many Lordaeronians may have learned Dwarven as a popular secondary language for purposes of trade. The Thalassian language of the high elves was likely a close second. It is known that Forsaken speak Gutterspeak, but rather this is a Lordaeronian dialect spoke or not is not known. “When I clawed my way out of the grave, I thought my family would welcome me with open arms. Instead, they drove me out of the village, screaming in a language I could no longer understand.” [(NPC: Dan Golthas, a Forsaken)](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Dan_Golthas) This would lend itself to appear that in death, the Forsaken or Scourge lose their language they knew before such as Common.

Family Life: It is interesting that Dansel Adams, a simple “hunter by trade” said that he was a “Scarlet Crusader by blood” indicating a family bond to Scarlet Crusade families. [[Item: News From the North]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/News_From_The_North) This is emphasized again with the Brazier of Invocation: User’s Manual, in which, “and it was suspected that their family had ties to the [Scarlet Crusade].”
(wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Brazier_of_Invocation:_User%27s_Manual)

Literary Arts

There is not much information on the literature and poetry of Lordaeron or much of the Eastern Kingdoms. Human literature likely grew out of epic poetry and oral storytelling dedicated to battle and valor. The vrykul bard Helgus composed three epic sagas: Saga of the Twins, Saga of the Val’kyr, and Saga of the Winter Curse (Quest: The Enemy’s Legacy). On what would become the Eastern Kingdoms, early humans retold many epic stories passed down on scrolls from the vrykul legends, including those pertaining to the greatly admired Watcher Tyr (Ask CDev Round #1) who’s hand and story were venerated for thousands of years before the Silver Hand were formed in the Second War [CoA]. Since that time, humanity has probably developed much of its own literature and published stories. Numerous Lordaeronian households contain bookshelves filled with books, which are likely not all works of non-fiction.

There is a Lordaeornian Lullaby:

“Lu, la lu, my dearest child,

Lu, la lu, lu la lay,

Lordaeron says, “Go to sleep.”

Azeroth says, “Dream you deep.”

Lu, la lu, la lu, la lay,

Safe in my arms you’ll stay.” (Before the Storm)

This is a Lordaeron Nursery Rhyme:

Be wary, child, of Plaguelands plain

Be mindful, child, of the infected grain

For if throat is parched and of infected water sip

Forever your soul will be in cursed Scourge grip.

So heed this warning, child, and if far from mother stray

Let light from home’s hearth guide you back your way.

—Human nursery rhyme, already in use six years after the Third War (Warcraft: Legends Volume 1, The Journey)

Poetry: Humans, such as the child Alicia of Stormwind, are known to compose poetry (Quest: Alicia’s Poem). The miner Jitters of Duskwood also compares himself to a “pipe-mad poet”? (Jitters’ Completed Journal). There were likely Lordaeronian poets who wrote romantic poetry of the time before industrialization or of the untamed Lordaeronian wilds still remaining. Some Lordaeronian poets may have also held romantic views of the nation’s great spiritualism or sacrifice. One example for Uther is:

“His name brought Light to darkest Azeroth.
His valor tore the walls of mis’ry down.
The Silver Hand would ne’er do better more
than give the world the knight who’d give himself.
His fame was not that which he sought to grow,
nor was the lordship over his own kind.
Instead he chose to fight for Lordaeron
to hope his kin would have to fight no more.
The tragic tale of this most holy knight
will never end with his unholy death.
We honor him, and we shall give him thanks!
Uther always shall know glory and Light!” [(Item: For the Light!)](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/For_the_Light!)

Media/Propaganda

Up until the point of the Scarlet Brotherhood, it is unknown what level of media there is. With the Battle for Azeroth, though, and the Battle for Tirisfal Glades, the self-penned ‘Scarlet Brotherhood’ wrote various propaganda pieces and distributed them across the Tirisfal Glades. (Item: The Cursed Old Wolf) (Item: The Last Menethil) (Item: The Traitor King)(Item: The Would-Be Queen)

Names

Most humans of the Eastern Kingdoms have two names, a given first name, by which they are informally called, and a surname.

Given Names:

Female Names: WIP.

Male Names: WIP.

Surnames: WIP.

Attested Noble Surnames: WIP.

Commoner Surnames: WIP.

National Symbols

Scarlets have a number of symbolic motifs that recur throughout their society: the double-sided eagle which was on their Old Alliance tabards, the more modern Scarlet Flame, the “L” of Lordaeron that is red, and their Church flag which is a red background with the Church of the Holy Light’s cross-shaped symbol that is gold.

Eagles: The eagle may have been the chief heraldic animal for Lordaeron.

Scarlet Flame: With the red of the Scarlet Flame, this is one of the most iconic icons of the Scarlets.

Crest of Lordaeron: In the shape of an ‘L’, this flag icon that was once blue with a white background is now the red of the Scarlet Crusade.

Performing Arts

Sparse evidence exists for the widespread presence of theatre, opera, and musical performance among the Seven Kingdoms. The performing arts culture of the Eastern Kingdoms is unknown. There is evidence for the presence of musical and dramatic performers among the Seven Kingdoms. The status of the performing arts among Lordaeronian culture cannot be fully ascertained.

Theatre: A theatrical scene of some variety probably exists in the Eastern Kingdoms, though it cannot be certain how widespread it is. Karazhan features an opera house with three separate opera plays and haunted by spectral performers. Other opera houses likely exist in larger urban centers such as Stormwind City, Lordaeron City, Stratholme, and so on. It is unknown as to what language or dialect of high culture most operas were traditionally composed. Lordaeron’s strong nationalism probably led to plays and operas being performed in the Lordaeronian dialect or language. Lordaeronian plays would probably feature legendary figures and events of Lordaeronian myth and history.

Music: Musicians commonly played background music to liven up the atmosphere at many banquets of the Seven Kingdoms (TLG, ch.1). Known instruments include flutes, piccolos, lutes, harps, lyres, horns, pipe organ, and drums. Minstrels were relatively common in the Eastern Kingdoms. Camerick Jongleur is a wandering minstrel presiding at Menethil Harbor although it is not known if he is a Lordaeronian or not. A hearthsinger was likely another name for a professional wandering bard or minstrel among the Seven Kingdoms. Hearthsinger Forresten now haunts the burning ruins of Stratholme as a ghost. The Elves also have lutes that are in Silvermoon so this could have been another form of music.

Recreation

There is little in the way of direct reference to sport and leisurely pastimes commonly taken up by Lordaeronians. Many of these recreational activities must be inferred from the material evidence of Scarlets or speculated based on broader cultural patterns. While some pastimes may be more particular to the Lordaeron, the nation likely shared many of its popular recreational activities with its fellow Seven Kingdoms.

Fireworks: In the Crusader’s Armory in Vanilla Scarlet Monastery there are variants of fireworks of all colors of which a red firework you can stack. Since they are nonviolent and harmless, they are presumably therefore toys that would have distracted Scarlet Crusaders from the ravages of war.

Dancing: Dancing was likely a popular pastime for Lordaeronians of all social classes. Attending banquets, balls, and parties made for opportune occasions for social dancing. In a vision of old Kharazhan, for example, “[Khadgar] passed through a banquet hall, at one end a group of musicians playing soundlessly, dancers twirling in a gavotte”? (TLG, ch.1). Likewise, Gilnean wedding parties likely also included festive dancing (CotW, Vol.1). Such social dances may have provided men and women an opportunity to meet suitable spouses. Obviously as well, any race can /dance and therefore there were likely dances unique to Lordaeron as all the City-States from Arathor had their own distinct customs [Book: The Seven Human Kingdoms].

Gladiatorial Combatants: Specifically in the case of Thrall, he was a gladiator at Durnholde Keep and there might have been bets going on while fighting in battles that could have been to the death for the Orcish combatants.

Fishing: In addition to being a livelihood, fishing may have been a leisurely pastime for many Lordaeronians. A number of locations in Lordaeron have docks such as Caer Darrow or Southshore and Aretain Naris and his bandit squadron referred to the Southshore people as “smelly fishheads” [Alliance Player’s Guide].

Fortune Telling: The consultation of fortune-tellers was a pastime that likely existed on the fringe for Lordaeronians. While not directly the same practice as a gypsy and fortune-telling, we know that there are Scarlet Augurs in the Scarlet Monastery and the definition of an augur is using signs to do divination or essentially to use good or ill omens to predict if something is going to happen. The Scarlet Oracle also supposedly had ‘other-wordly’ senses and made predictions that assisted Saidan Dathrohan in various Scarlet victories. [Quest: The Scarlet Oracle]

Gambling: Gambling is a known practice in Azeroth. Gambling occurred at Aedelas Blackmoore’s gladiator matches at his internment camps (LotC, ch.4; A:RotLK, ch.4). Gambling was particularly beloved by pirates (Quest: Gambling Debt). Lordaeronian drinking taverns, inns, and pubs would have served as opportune establishments for gambling in a game of cards or bones.

Note: Simple card games could be made using simply the [Mysterious Fortune Card].

Gardening: Gardening may have become a leisurely pursuit for some Lordaeronians. Several homes grow flowers in their gardens such as the Culling of Stratholme, and roses are grown around arbors. Alexandros Mograine of Lordaeron was known to have tended a garden around his house [ASH]. Some houses also contain potted plants (CotW, Vol.2). Gardening is a form of natural art in which gardeners “sculpt”? nature around them. The Scarlet Monastery is home to the Whispering Gardens. In the Culling of Stratholme, there was also a boutique shop full of flowers. Lastly at the Scarlet Monastery there is the Chapel Gardens.

Hunting: Hunting may have been a popular sport for Lordaeronians, particularly among the male nobility. Boar skulls, mounted stag heads, bear and wolf furs, along with foothold traps and blunderbuss rifles, commonly adorn the interior of Old Hillsbrad and Culling of Stratholme buildings. Fox hunting may have also been popular, especially among the nobility. Scarlets in particular also breed Scarlet Tracking Hounds as hunting dogs. Darrowshire also had its own hunting grounds. New Avalon citizens used Scarlet Hunting Hounds at the Scarlet Enclave. The reason being for Scarlet Hounds is that they help hunt the living and the dead: “the quickest and surest way to detect the undead is by the scent of rot they carry, and even the most veteran soldier cannot match the olfactory sense of a hound. Houndmaster Braun has bred and trained a savage pack of canies to aid the crusaders in hunting down their foes–living and undead." - Adventure Guide

Music: Learning music may have served as a polite accomplishment for some Lordaeronians. Flutes, harps, and lutes were probably common musical instruments among all the Seven Kingdoms (A:RotLK, ch.6). Attending music halls may have also been a popular form of entertainment.

Natural History: The study of natural history may have become a popular amateur hobby in Lordaeron. This hobby may have taken the form of collecting wildlife or rocks, watching animals, uncovering ancient civilizations, or it may have been a more formal scientific study. There are signs that natural history may have already been in vogue among Lordaeronians. This would make sense as in the Cataclysm there started being Archeology and there are plenty of sites across lordaeron.

Parks & Hiking: Scarlets may have also visited parks as a form of recreation. They reason they could have had such great portraits of landscapes is if they were visited themselves. There is also the Terrace of Repose and at the Scarlet Cathedral of the Scarlet Monastery in Vanilla Scarlet Monastery, there is a garden-like scenery where one could get quiet time to read a book or enjoy the scenic view of a fountain spewing water with statues.

Playing: “You don’t see as many children pretending to be Knights of the Silver Hand these days, but it’s still not uncommon.” [LoC] Perhaps the children would be pretending to be Silver Hand Knights or even future Scarlet Crusaders. Taelan Fordring had his own wooden sword that he played with that was his father’s, Tirion’s before him.

Reading: Most Scarlet homes and locations contain bookshelves filled with numerous books, which may point to leisure reading as a pastime. Literacy may have been important for career and social advancement.

Sewing: Sewing and embroidery may have been a leisurely activity, as well as an expected life skill, for Lordaeronian women. Many houses across Lordaeron include weaving looms along with spools and balls of yarn such as at the Culling of Stratholme including a tailor shop.

Smoking: Tobacco was likely a pastime for people to bond together in both Lordaeron and as Scarlets. In the Scarlet Enclave, the Citizens drop Richly Appointed Pipes so they must have been smoking something in those pipes. It could have been Fras Siabi’s Premium Tobacco from Stratholme or another source.

Toys: The leisure activity for young children likely consisted of playing with various toys. One home of a child during the Culling of Stratholme had dolls and in the Darrowshire questline, the child ghost Pamela asks you to retrieve her doll [[Quest: Pamela’s Doll]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Pamela%27s_Doll_(quest)). Several homes also contain stuffed dolls. After a certain age, children may have joined in on the recreational pursuits of their parents.

Visual Arts

Scarlets have a flourishing visual art scene, though it is limited in a few key areas. The large abundance of the arts, particularly paintings, may have occurred as a result of the tremendous amount of spendable wealth accrued through the Scarlet Church receiving essentially tithes or funding [Item: Give to the Church and the Light Will Provide]. Or perhaps they were salvaged from Lordaeron when there were better times. The Scarlets at the Monastery have a Gallery of Treasures which might be treasures from their Silver Hand days as well as the Crusade’s.

Painting: There is no other kingdom with the sheer amount of unique paintings that the Scarlet Monastery alone has to its name. Scarlets shares three landscape paintings with the other human kingdoms. Portraits of Silver Hand Knights to children and various Scarlet females abound in the Scarlet Monastery halls.

Sculpture: Sculpture is another point of distinction for Scarlets. Statues are common among many other human cultures as monuments to their heroes. Stormwind’s Valley of Heroes is a memorial of five statues for the leaders of the Alliance Expedition. Stormwind also has statues of King Varian Wrynn. The Scarlet Crusade dedicated statues to their fallen heroes in the Scarlet Monastery in the Halls of Champions.

Textiles: Lordaeronians also frequently adorn their homes and public buildings with woven tapestries. These tapestries are all slight variations of a single design: a bouquet of red and white roses surrounded by a frame of vines and gnarled wood. This design most commonly is set on a pale green background. Culling of Stratholme buildings also commonly have large patterned rugs. It also mentioned that “another weaves roughspun cloth,” [LoC] and that through a barter system would trade with other villagers who had excesses of their own resources like chickens.

Busts: Busts are seen all over Old Lordaeron such as in the top of the keep of Durnholde at Old Hillsbrad. There are also many busts in the Scarlet Monastery presumably dedicated to its Silver Hand owners before or Scarlets in the past time or present.

THE SCARLET COMPENDIUM

VIII. FESTIVALS AND RITUALS

----------------------------------

Death and Burial Practices

Lordaeronians treat their dead with reverence, even in the most dire of times. This changed in the Scourging of Lordaeron, however; in the Scarlet Monastery there are Scarlets with flamethrowers burning corpse piles to dwindle the Scourge population and the Argents even have their own pile of corpses burning in the Eastern Plaguelands where Death-Speaker Hawkspear is kneeling by the Quel’Lithien Lodge.

Burial Practices: For Lordaeron there have been different burial practices for certain scenarios. When in passing between what would be the Hinterlands and Durnholde Keep in the Old Hillsbrad Foothills dungeon, you can see an Alliance soldier skeleton because of the armor it wears buried along with its sword and shield. Why the coffin might be open is unknown.

Family Crypt: Richer families have been known to have Family Crypts. In Vanilla WoW, the Trollbane Family had a family crypt protected by the Caretakers. [Quest: Trol’Kalar] While this was in Stromgarde, the Agamand Family Crypt is another example of Lordaeronians specifically having their own family crypt and thus it must have been the more wealthy families who owned massive farms or estates who would have been capable of affording these luxuries.

Grave Markers: Lordaeronians use the symbol of the Church of the Holy Light (a vertical line bisecting two separated semicircles) constructed from white wood as cheap, nameless grave markers. While these grave markers are a common sight across all Lordaeron, they are frequently found among lower-class farming communities such as at Southshore. This symbol is commonly incorporated in the headstones of other non-Lordaeron human nations, usually as an adornment atop a larger headstone. Many non-Lordaeron headstones using this symbol also include a lion head at the center of the semicircles.

Mausoleum: In Deathknell there is a Mausoleum that is not accessible.

Tomb: For venerated heroes like Uther, there might have been massive tombs constructed that honored them and their sacrifices. Uther’s is the only one that is known or named, but even Thoras Trollbane came to Whitemane’s Tomb in the Scarlet Monastery to resurrect her as one of the Four Hoursemen so it is likely that the greatest champions of the Scarlet Crusade are buried there. This practice is also seen at Light’s Hope Chapel for the Lordaeronians and Argent Dawn who’s greatest champions of Lordaeron had been buried there for hundreds of years and that is why Darion Mograine defended it as an Argent Dawner in life against the First Battle for Light’s Hope Chapel (which happened before the Second Battle did at the end of the Death Knight quest chain). [ASH]

Festivals and Holidays

Lordaeron and Scarlets shares most of their major holidays and festivals with Lordaeron and Stormwind, presumably along with the other human Seven Kingdoms.

“There’s a lot more to human culture than just blastin’ and swingin’ (but most of it’s more boring). Holiday assimilation is important; they celebrate anything that anyone else does. For example, we dwarves have a winter festival where we tell stories about Greatfather Winter; in recent years, more and more humans have been participating in this event. Likewise, they have joined us in honoring the veterans of war in recent Harvest Festivals each year; in specific, many pay tribute to Uther the Lightbringer, who is considered among the foremost of human heroes. The humans of Lordaeron used to have a festival near the end of harvest; the Forsaken have bastardized this practice, and now use the evening for their mysterious “Wickerman” rituals
I intend to observe it this year and record what I can, since I know little about this strange event.” [LoC]

Hallow’s End: Hallow’s End is human holiday celebrated towards the end of the autumn season that culminates in the ceremonial burning of an effigy referred to as the Wickerman. Hallow’s End is a popular holiday on the Lordaeron continent. Most celebrate Hallow’s End by attending festivities and donning costumes (ToW, ch.9). Prince Arthas reflects on the meaning and significance of Hallow’s End and the Wickerman at some length:

“There were several smaller festivals leading up to Hallow’s End. One was somber, one was celebratory, and this one was a bit of both. It was believed to be a time when the barrier between the living and the dead was thin, and those who had passed on could be sensed by those still alive. Tradition had it that at the end of the harvest season, before the winds of winter began to blow, that a straw effigy would be erected right outside the palace. At sunset on the night of the ceremony, it would be lit on fire. It was an awesome sight: a giant flaming wicker man, burning bright against the encroaching night. Anyone who wished could approach the fiery effigy, toss a branch into the cracking flames, and in so doing metaphorically “burn away” anything he did not wish to carry into the quiet, deep reflection time provided by winter’s enforced inactivity.

It was a peasant ritual, sprung up from time immemorial. Arthas suspected that few nowadays truly believed that tossing a branch into a fire would really solve their problems; even fewer believed that contact with the dead was possible. He certainly didn’t. But it was a popular celebration.

“My countrymen, I join you in celebration of this most revered of nights: the night when we remember those who are no longer with us, and cast aside the things that hold us back. We burn the effigy of the wicker man as a symbol of the year that is passing, much as the farmers burn the remains of the harvested fields. The ashes nourish the soil, and this rite nourishes our souls. It is good to see so many here tonight. I am pleased to be able to offer the distinct honor of lighting the wicker man to Lady Jaina Proudmoore.” (A:RotLK, ch.7)”

Although the Kingdom of Lordaeron practiced the ceremony in the times shortly before the fall of Prince Arthas (A:RotLK, ch.7), recent Hallow’s End quests claim that “some aspects of the festival, like the Wickerman, have been lost to time”? for the Alliance until “the return of the Gilneans to the Alliance fold” (Quest: A Season for Celebration).

It is not known that the Scarlets per say celebrate Hallow’s End which was originally celebrated in Lordaeron beforehand, but more interestingly enough, are the reason it exists how it does in the modern sense with the Headless Horseman because Saidan Dathrohan the Grand Crusader who was possessed by Balnazzar. “During the Hallow’s End in Year 24, the Headless Horseman was created in the Scarlet Monastery by Balnazzar using fel energies over the dead body of Thomas Thomson.” [A Cleansing Fire]

Midsummer Fire Festival: The Midsummer Fire Festival was a holiday celebrated during the summertime in the Eastern Kingdoms (A:RotLK, ch.7). The festival involved lighting sacred fires meant “to rekindle peoples’ spirits and ward off ancient evils”. (us.battle. net/wow/en/blog/6473744). The Scarlets even celebrated Midsummer until they were wiped out during the Cataclysm and all became Risen.[ [Quest: A Light In Dark Places]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/A_Light_in_Dark_Places)

Harvest Festival: It does not explicitly state that the Harvest Festival was celebrated by Lordaeron, but pilgrimages to Uther’s Tomb are regularly made to commemorate his sacrifice and one might assume Lordaeornians or Scarlets would do such as well. [[Quest: Honoring A Hero]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Honoring_a_Hero_(Alliance))

"Throughout history, many have given their lives to aid their allies. Every year, members of the Horde and the Alliance set aside time to honor the memories of the fallen and to pay tribute to those whose memories are held most dear: Uther Lightbringer, for the Alliance, and Grom Hellscream, for the Horde. Heroes take time from their adventures to visit the graves of these two great leaders and to leave a tribute to them at the memorial. To show their respect, members of the Alliance light a candle at the Tomb of Uther Lightbringer in the Western Plaguelands. Members of the Horde show their respect to Grom Hellscream by leaving a bottle of spirits at the base of the Hellscream Memorial in Demon Fall Canyon in Ashenvale.” [worldofwarcraft. com website]**

Hordefall: “Each year the [Hillsbraders] celebrate Hordefall, the anniversary of the Second War’s end.
 During the holiday
it involves singing, drinking and incinerating small orc dolls.” [LoC] This would likely be a pretty crucial event and a great time of reflection upon better times when Lordaeron was at its peak and the Scourge hadn’t ruined Lordaeron yet and were times when things were easier and lives were more simple.

Marriage Practices

It does not state specifically how marriage practices may or may not have been done in Lordaeron, but for royalty it was a big deal. Terenas thought about wedding Calia Menethil to Prestor (who was actually Deathwing). “Considering the matter further, Terenas thought of his daughter, Calia. Still a child, but certainly soon to be a beauty. Perhaps one day, if matters went well, he and Prestor could strengthen their friendship and alliance with a royal marriage, too. “ [Day of the Dragon] Arthas asked what Father wanted to which Calia told him to marry Prestor and she was only sixteen and would have to wait two more years. She felt like she was a horse. Marriages must have been done for political gain. She states this so marriage must have been a way for nobility to form diplomatic relationships. [World of Warcraft: Arthas: Rise of the Lich King] It is interesting to note, too, that the Silver Hand did not forbid marriages. and thus the Scarlet Crusade must have not, either, as the continuation of the Silver Hand Knights and the great need to preserve what remnants of them were life. We know that Lillian Voss was the child of High Priest Benedictus and thus must have had a lover or a wife at some point of being in the Scarlet Crusade. “Turalyon nodded, not trusting himself to speak. He had seen women before, of course, and nothing about his [Silver Hand] Order forbade relationships or even marriage.” [Tides of Darkness] This means that the Scarlet Crusade as an extension of the Silver Hand would have likely of still had marriages of their own. The Vishas family were a married couple for example.

Thoradin also “brought the other tribes in just 6 years and won a few of his adversaries to his side through political marriages” [World of Warcraft Chronicle] and therefore marriages for sure, but even just political marriages, have been in human history for 2800 years prior to the Dark Portal.

—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE SCARLET COMPENDIUM

IX. RELIGIONS AND SPIRITUALITY

----------------------------------

The religious practices and beliefs of Lordaeron are all based in the Church of the Holy Light but after the Scourging of Lordaeron and the rise of the Scarlet Crusade, the Scarlets would adopt their own Church.

Church of the Holy Light

The Church of the Holy Light forms the largest religious institution in the Kingdom of Lordaeron. ”Over the decades, devout clerics from the emergent Church of the Holy Light had ventured south from Lordaeron to spread their faith. Upon reaching Stormwind, these pious individuals founded the Holy Order of Northshire Clerics. The kingdom looked to these clerics as a source of wisdom and comfort in hard times.” [Warcraft Chronicle, Volume 1]

“Churches are places of worship where the citizens of Lordaeron seek spiritual enlightenment. Once led by devout Clerics, Churches now depend on Paladins to minister to the masses in this time of war. It is in these places for healing and serenity that the holy warriors gather to deepen their faith. Through meditating, communing and tithing at these sanctified sites, Paladins discover new ways to channel their healing and spiritual powers.” [WC2] This lends itself to the fact that: healing and serenity would occur at Scarlet churches and places of worship to deepen their faith. Meditation would have been used, as well as communing and tithing and is further backed up the text, Give to the Church and the Light Will Provide.

It is interesting to see how spiritual and influential spirituality is for the Lordaeronians. “The armies of Lordaeron are deeply religious
Faol convinced the ecclesiastic ministers of Lordaeron to gird their priests and followers alike with weapons of war. As the guardians took up swords of light to defend the heavens, so must the holy men of earth be prepared to combat the dark tide that was quickly approaching from the south.” [WC2]

Paladins: “Paladins are a holy order of warriors whose purpose is to defend and shepherd the war-torn populace of Lordaeron. Led by the crusading Uther Lightbringer, it now rests upon these Paladins - christened the Knights of the Silver Hand - to heal the wounds sustained in combat and to restore faith in the promise of freedom from Orcish tyranny.” [WC2]

The Church of the Holy Light was the most culturally widespread religion in Lordaeron. The Church in Lordaeron had priests and sanctuaries of the Light, and its citizens venerated the Holy Light as well. Within a human context, however, paladins did not simply spontaneously emerge wherever people worshiped the Light. The Church of the Holy Light existed long before the existence of paladins. Lordaeron’s Silver Hand paladins are instead tied to a specific historical point of origination. Lordaeronian paladins are historically an exceptionally contemporary creation of the Church (the Second War compared to some ~2800 years that the Church of the Holy Light has existed).

All human paladins and their respective orders trace their historical lineage back to the Order of the Silver Hand. Archbishop Faol conceived and established the Silver Hand in Lordaeron at the advent of the Second War around 6 ADP (ToD, ch.1). Initially, Archbishop Faol drew most of the Silver Hand’s numbers from Lordaeron. During the Crisis of Alterac Succession (~8-10 ADP), the Order of the Silver Hand owed its outward allegiance to Terenas, and they were the only force the other kings trusted as guards in Alliance meetings (DotD, ch.6). Following the Second War, paladins were deployed wherever their abilities were needed, which were often places heavily affected by the damages of the Second War. As such, the Silver Hand’s members would have split their order’s efforts between the heavily affected war-torn kingdoms of the Alliance in the Second War: Lordaeron, Stormwind, Stromgarde, and Kul Tiras. Incidentally, these are the only human kingdoms with documented paladins. (DotD, ch.1; LoHP).

Although other nations had paladins, paladin training was often closely tied to the Kingdom of Lordaeron. Before the fall of Lordaeron, the Scarlet Monastery served as a training ground for paladins of other nations. Captain Nials even mentions how the loss of the Scarlet Monastery prevents Stromgarde from training more paladins to fight the Forsaken (Quest: The Scarlet Monastery).

The Scarlet Church

“The [Scarlet Crusade] count the Alliance and the Church of Holy Light as their allies, but these organizations quickly distance themselves from these fanatics, and instruct all travelers to give a wide berth to any Crusaders.” [LoC]

The Scarlets have their own Church. [[Item: Give To the Light and the Light Will Provide]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Give_to_the_Church_and_the_Light_Will_Provide), although it does not name exactly what this Church is called. The Church of the Holy Light views more favorably upon the Argents than the Scarlets [Chris Metzen Twitter Post] or in more extreme situations considers both as heretics. [LoC]

The Scarlet Church has their own holy water. [[Item: Tyr’s Hand Holy water](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Tyr%27s_Hand_Holy_Water)]

Clergy: Scarlet priests are followers of the Light and exist as part an established Scarlet Church ([Item: Give to the Church and the Light Will Provide](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Give_to_the_Church_and_the_Light_Will_Provide)). While it does not say specifically there are Sisters within the Scarlet Crusade, we know there is a Brother Anton and Brother Crowley. Although this was not used until the Scarlet Onslaught, the Scarlets presumably recognize the ecclesiastical leadership and authority of the Archbishop as the Lordaeronians would have Alonsus Faol; or perhaps even the High Abbot who was Landgren during the Wrath of the Lich King before he became the Onslaught’s Archbishop.

“Humans were the first known followers of the Holy Light, and remain its primary followers. Though faith had waned somewhat during the Third War with the inability of the Silver Hand to cure the Scourge, organizations like the Scarlet Crusade have managed to regain the faith of the people (for better or worse). The Holy Light plays a major part in human culture; even those who don’t believe in it pay the Light lip service. I’ve heard “For the Light!” shouted more times on the battlefield than I care to count. Hell, even warlocks spend a good deal of time cursing the Light — so I guess they consider it worth their attention.” [LoC]

The Scarlet Church also has their own version of a red background with a golden cross not unlike the Church of the Holy Light’s white background and golden cross. [NPC: Archbishop Landgren, Scarlet Initiates]

Holy Sites:

Scarlet Bastion: “Grand Crusader Dathrohan struggles to hold a small outpost known as the Scarlet Bastion in the undead-infested city of Stratholme, the Scarlet Crusade’s holiest site. The Scarlet Bastion is where the Silver Hand ïŹrst formed, and where the founding members took their oaths.” (DF, pg 156)

Scarlet Monastery: “The Monastery was once a proud bastion of Lordaeron’s priesthood - a center for learning and enlightenment. With the rise of the undead Scourge during the Third War, the peaceful Monastery was converted into a stronghold of the fanatical Scarlet Crusade. The Crusaders are intolerant of all non-human races, regardless of alliance or affiliation. They believe that any and all outsiders are potential carriers of the undead plague - and must be destroyed. Reports indicate that adventurers who enter the monastery are forced to contend with Scarlet Commander Mograine - who commands a large garrison of fanatically devoted warriors. However, the monastery’s true master is High Inquisitor Whitemane - a fearsome priestess who possesses the ability to resurrect fallen warriors to do battle in her name.” [World Dungeons - Worldofwarcraft. com] The Scarlet Monastery is where the Scarlet Crusade formed and Saidan Dathrohan (but Balnazzar possessed) went from Lord-Commander of the Silver Hand to Grand Crusader of the Scarlet Crusade. Here, Renault Mograine took the Silver Hand Oath but as a Scarlet and not a Silver Hand. [ASH]

Tyr’s Hand: "Tyr’s Hand is manned by an army of Scarlet Crusaders and is untouched by the undead plague. Located in the southeastern Plaguelands, Tyr’s Hand is the only human settlement left in this part of Lordaeron
The few humans who roam the Plaguelands desperately seek the safety of Tyr’s Hand, and I was forced to do the same." [LoC] Tyr’s Hand is where High General Abbendis (the father) died in future High General Brigitte Abbendis’s arms before Whitemane could arrive with Tirisfal Crusaders as reinforcements. [ASHBRINGER COMICS]

Uther’s Tomb: “The only place of any sanity in this cursed land, Uther’s Tomb is a simple monument to the fallen hero. A statue of Uther stands on a marble pedestal. The Holy Light shines on this place
” [LoC]

Artifacts:

The Ashbringer: “King Magni Bronzebeard forged the Ashbringer from a piece of crystal purified by wielders of the Holy Light. This gave the sword strange Light-bearing powers. It was named for its ability to slaughter undead, leaving nothing but ash in its wake. Ashbringer passed through several hands, serving both Light and Shadow
” [ASH]

Light’s Wrath: “Obsessed with cleansing undead from the world of Azeroth, the fanatical Scarlet Crusade tried to create a second Ashbringer in the form of a staff. However, a dreadlord (Balnazzar) who had infiltrated the order intervened, interrupting their efforts and triggering a violent magical explosion. The damaged staff’s power proved nearly uncontrollable.” (Worldofwarcraft. com)

Artifacts & Relics: These are mentioned in various quests (Quest: Scarlet Salvage) (Quest: Brother Carlin) that the Scarlet Crusade has artifacts and relics special to them. Even the Heroes of Darrowshire had their own relics that were held special to them (Quest: Heroes of Darrowshire) and it can be imagined that the Scarlet Crusade would have their own outside of those mentioned during the Scarlet Salvage questline.

[Gavinrad’s Sigil](wowhead. com/item=61962/gavinrads-sigil): “Engraved with the image of a silver fist, held up triumphantly.”

[Shroud of Uther:](wowhead. com/item=61961/shroud-of-uther) “A heavy piece of canvas, probably used as a blanket or shawl.”

[Crimson Boar:](wowhead. com/item=61959/crimson-boar) “A small jeweled statue.”

[Lihanna’s Strand](wowhead. com/item=61960/lihannas-strand): “Several small diamonds, strung together with gold filigree.”

[Davil’s Libram:](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Davil’s_Libram) "The heroes of Darrowshire held relics of their own, and inside of those relics lie more precious memories. It tells of the paladin Davil Lightfire and how the Crusade took his libram to the town hall of Hearthglen.

Doctrine & Beliefs
There are various sources of what the Scarlet Church might believe which came from the Scarlet Enclave.
Scarlets believe in miracles. [[Item: News From the North]](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/News_From_The_North)

“[Musings of the High General](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Musings_of_the_High_General):

"Purify the body with labor. Purify the soul with prayer. Purify your enemies with fire. Pain is not an enemy, but an ally to be embraced, held close, and delivered to unbeliever and believer alike.

Resistance to the ways of the Light is a sign of impurity, and should be excised from the flesh of the community."

“[Priestly Preening: Be Like Your Betters](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Priestly_Preening:_Be_Like_Your_Betters) (presumably for priests only)

  1. Cultivate a fulsome beard, for it conceals the imperfections of the face from the Light.

  2. Purify your hands in the milk of the mare, that they be soft and supple when handling the offertory.

  3. Bathe in the rivers, allowing the glorious natural gifts of the Light to cleanse your skin.

  4. Replace regularly your holy raiment, that your appearance and odours not offend the servants of the Light.

  5. Maintain at all times an upright posture - let not fatigue nor sloth curl the spine.

The list continues for several more pages of minutiae

[Give to the Church and the Light Will Provide:](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Give_to_the_Church_and_the_Light_Will_Provide)

"From the desk of High Abbot Landgren:

It may seem that in dark times of strife and turmoil that one must turn inward, protecting family and loved ones to the exclusion of all else. But these feelings are false - without the beacon of hope that is the Church, despair will quickly inundate the very pores of your family’s soul. All the full stomachs, warm toes, and happy smiles that worldly goods may purchase will not save your family from the creeping inner emptiness that shirking your fiduciary responsibilities to the light will induce.

Give to the church. The hardships endured through lack of worldly goods act as a forge for the soul, burning out impurities and raising you up to a higher plane of being. Be not ashamed at the rumbling of an empty stomach, the bite of a sharp rock upon your bare foot, or the chill of the winter wind. These are but means by which the Light communicates its inspiration to the soul. These sacrifices ensure that the arching, gold-appointed paeans to the Light which so inspire you at worship are well-maintained.

Eschew the comforts of the flesh, and come ever closer to the Light."

Flagellation: Flagellation is a real practice used by Church of the Holy Light members and this likely could be reiterated in a couple of ways through Scarlet knowledge. The thoughts of Arthas goes: “scourging; the instrument of self- flagellation of the same name, sometimes used by some of the more fringe elements of the priesthood, was meant to cleanse impurities.” [WoW: Arthas: Rise of the Lich King] Furthermore, Abbendis while she did not say exactly of self-flagellation, that “pain is not an enemy, but an ally to be embraced, held close, and delivered to unbeliever and believer alike” (Item: [Musings of the High General](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/Musings_of_the_High_General))

Beliefs: There are many different beliefs depending on the Scarlet Crusade sector. Some might have followed Abbendis and Saidan Dathrohan unwittingly and had no idea how bad the Scarlet Crusade had fallen. The Scarlet Crusade was formed with, per Raleigh the Devout’s words, “a [noble] cause to rid Azeroth of the undead” (Quest: In the Name of the Light). The Scarlet Crusade started a "war with the Scourge" because “it is an evil that corrupts our people and infects our land [and therefore] must be stopped before it overwhelms us and drags our world into shadow.” (Quest: Down the Scarlet Path). It is not mentioned if this is a prerequisite to joining or some type of ritual, but those “of the Scarlet Crusade have sworn to fight the Scourge with body and soul”.[ (Quest: Down the Scarlet Path)]

From the Forsaken’s perspective, the first encounter with the Scarlets in Deathknell, Executor Arren said that, “the Scarlet Crusade is a despicable organization that hunts Forsaken, and they will not rest until every undead–Lich King’s Scourge or no—is destroyed,” and to, “be careful [because] their unholy zeal makes them dangerous adversaries” (Quest: The Scarlet Crusade) (wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/The_Scarlet_Crusade_(quest))

Once a cause worthy of one’s “honor, loyalty, and pride” (Quest:In The Name of the Light), some like Raleigh the Devout "realized that their grasp on reality was slipping. They now think everyone is plagued who doesn’t wear the tabard of the Crusade. Innocent men and women were tortured because they were supposedly plagued," and that the Crusade had become a “deranged regime”. ([Quest:In The Name of the Light](wowpedia.fandom. com/wiki/In_the_Name_of_the_Light))

Well I appreciate your constructive criticism and implore you if you are so motivated and driven to take the time out of your day to compose something like this that you go right on ahead and do it. Otherwise, I think it would be in your best interest to pick people up instead of always trying to bring them down and that is a big problem I see in this community that we need to fix. I know your intentions were to be ugly to me but I am not going to be ugly to you and I hope that you enjoy the read and much as others do who read with open minds! Everything I stated is backed up by lore or canon stuff and while I can never say it is not a fanon work, I have ensured to use no personal bias and strictly what WoW gives us about the Scarlet Crusade and hope that you can appreciate all the different forms of examples I brought to prove the points that I make. Have an awesome day. =)

I don’t have to be ugly nor give constructive criticism the whole server and most know what kind of person you and you’re guild are ^.^ so at the end of the day i’m fine and not a scarlet guild that won’t last.

Dude really rolled up on a Manari, to troll someone by calling them “cringe”.

CRAZY

Well that is the case then please show me what this Compendium has in it that you can make assumptioms about my character. This Compendium is made for all Scarlet RPers and not for the Scarlet Reclamation so regardless if my guild fails or not it and Scarlet RPers will still be around.

Speaking on behalf of my guild though we’ve been a guild since March 11 of 2013 and the Scarlet Hand before in Aug of 2012 and we just hit our 12 year mark back in March so we are over a decade old and still active. If that’s your idea of “won’t last” then keep that mindset for the next 11 years while we’re still around and who knows, maybe we’ll outlast you as well?
