The scale of HEIGHT for races seem... off

This is something I remember noticing with the BFA races, but also an issue with the Dracthyr.

This wasn’t so much an issue for the Vanilla races, as they seemed much more relative to each other. Humans are obviously the standard by which all other races are judged, High/Blood Elves were always meant to be pretty close (a smidge taller, I believe, but nothing noticeable), where Night Elves were considerably taller, as noted by Grom Hellscream in WC3 when he immediately noted that they weren’t fighting the elves they were familiar with, because they were so much taller.

Orcs were always meant to be larger than Humans (I never imagined as being giants, so much as “way more buff”), Trolls were obviously tall but lanky, and Tauren are meant to be towering minotaurs.

I don’t remember where the Eredar/Draenei’s height was ever referenced, but I would assume something similar to Night Elves in height. Worgen, I would assume somewhere near Orcs.

Kul Tirans and Zandalari, though, look like absolute giants compared to any other race on their faction. And now the Dracthyr look to be nearly twice the height of a regular human.

What I suspect happened is that during BFA, with the Kul Tirans, they were only looking at the Human for context. Since they wanted to have “tiny lil guys” (that use the Forsaken model) and “big bois” like we got, they figured the greater the difference, the more stylized they would look.

Which would have been fine – if Humans were the ONLY other race in the game.

Similarly, with the Zandalari, they probably just looked at regular Trolls and thought “well, if they stand upright, this is how tall they would be”. But because Trolls were designed to be hunched over, they were designed at one height, and with Zandalari standing upright, it makes them the largest race in the game, bar none. Which feels strange, when I feel like Tauren are supposed to be the largest race currently playable (would still love to see Vrykul one day).

Dracthyr seem to have followed this trend of what I’m going to call “Height creep”, being about as tall as a Zandalari, towering over every other race.

I don’t really know what the design intention for Dracthyr was – they seem decidedly “un-stylized”, neither big and powerful, nor frail and wiry. Because of that, it just leaves them seeming disproportionately tall, but their proportions are a bit alien to WoW anyways, so it’s hard to say what they’re “supposed” to be.

By and large, it just feels like the races could have a second pass just in terms of their height, in comparison to one another. Not suggesting any actual changes to the models, merely just adjusting the scale of their size a bit as needed (like I said, Kul Tirans seem the most egregious to me).

Zandalari Trolls were initially shorter, being only a bit taller Night elves but shorter than Taurens and straight back regular Trolls. But people complained they were too short and i guess Blizzard agreed, because Zandalari Trolls were scaled up on the PTR before they were made playable.

i agree that kul tirans are too large. they should be around nelf height at most but they look to be 7.5-8 ft tall.

i am okay with zandalari and dracthyr height though. zandalari females are monstrous next to a darkspear female, but i can live with it. tauren should really be much larger but its a historical limitation

You say that those races are too tall, and conveniently ignore that they were introduced alongside dwarves and gnomes. And we’re getting more dwarves in TWW. Nevermind that dracthyr can be in visage form most of the time anyway. Why does this matter…at all?

Dracthyr are around the same as Zanda and Tauren. Tauren are still a little taller.

I actually don’t think the dracthyr are a problem. They are big because they are dragons. Male model customization in this game are some of the overly exaggerated muscle building men in any game I’ve ever seen. The average mage looks like zangief for some reason lol. It was made even crazier with the Kultiran being like 8ft tall :joy:

Dracthyr are strong and big. There is nothing wrong with them imo. They just don’t look like they lift cows over their head all day for a living like the majority of the races.

No it was because the original rig was based on nelves. Xandalari are meant to be at least head taller than jungle troll.

Trolls were always meant to be tall, Zandalari are just taller than their kin as progenitors of the other subraces.

Kul’tiras are literally half-giants, they are meant to be as tall as a drust/vrykul.

The dracthyr intention was to lean into the furry/tumblr side of stuff, we don’t discuss much about it

Give me my eight foot tall werewolf women.

If you played Warcraft 3, Tauren are supposed to be like twice their current height lol.

They dwarf Orcs.

You clearly never played horde side. Raiding with Taurens on Argus was pain.

It’s the truth, all those little swirlies around to dodge and fat tauren hiding them!
