I think we’re starting to see a paradigm shift in the MMORPG market. A sort of return to our roots type of movement is really catching on in our beloved genre. With games like OSRS, and Everquest: Project 1999 already on the market and scheduled releases of WoW: Classic, Pantheon, Saga of Lucimia, and Camelot Unchained. I think these will be the games that lead the charge on the whole Retro MMORPG movement and show the major companies that this is the direction and future of MMOs. Keep your eyes peeled, ladies gentlemen. I have a feeling 2019-2020 will be the years we look back on as the beginning of the rebirth of the MMORPG.
Nothing official has been released, yes. But both Pantheon and SoL teams have mentioned in videos they’re trying for late 2019 early 2020 releases, but ultimately will release when the product is good and ready. I don’t know about Camelot, though, as I don’t follow the development of that game. I’m pretty confidant we’ll see all those games by the end of 2020.
I tried giving a few other MMOs a try but I gave up and went back to wow (both retail and vanilla pserver)
I tried order & chaos for a while. Best game I’ve ever played on mobile but for an actual mmo its way too easy and socially dead.
I tried everquest for a little bit and ehh…it just doesn’t seem to catch my taste although the zones and lore was pretty cool. Combat doesn’t seem as engaging as wow so I just find it to be too boring, and just like o&a, socially dead as well.
I think vanilla wow is the most balanced mmo thats available. Not too easy, not too hard, gameplay and mechanics are solid. I never tried any of the MMOs listed above but I will consider it as I’ll look them up in the future. I really hope these new games will bring about something that vanilla wow has, but just in a different persons image.
i don’t see that as an Old school MMO. it seems almost like a life simulator in many ways because you can pretty much do whatever you want. want to go farm mats and own your own business? sure thing you can do that.
want to build a city and live the life of a lord? go ahead.
eh this one is different. for example your character ages, dies, and you reincarnate in your offspring, and start the process anew (But with slightly better “stats”.
so lets say you spent your life as a lumberjack and you got to 50 lumberjacking.
when you reincarnate you might have 10 lumberjacking at the start instead of 1.
Theres no way there ever going to fix the damage done since Warlords of Draenor so the only way to go forward is to go back. I will only play classic wow at this point.
I’m playing everquest’s project 1999 right now, and having a good time. it was the direct predecessor to wow, and as a result, harder. like if you die, you have to run back to your corpse fully visible and no armor or weapons, cause they’re on your corpse, and you lose xp (but your armor doesnt have to be repaired, instead you have to re-earn the lost xp. you can actually de-level).
there are no riding mounts in project 1999 because horses werent introduced till like the 5th expansion and project 1999 will never go past the 2nd expansion (so its original everquest plus kunark expac and velious expac).
its so old school, there’s no auction house. instead players select one of their character’s to sell their loot, in a tunnel, in a centrally located zone. if you want to shop you have to travel there and haggle the price .
The only reason I’m not playing EQ99 right now is because I’m too lazy to track down a fresh EQ Titanium install and then do the file modifications to make the emulator work. Plus there’s the hassle of if you accidentally update it you need to reinstall and do everything all over.
what i liked about wow was they fixed the most glaring problems everquest had, such as losing xp when in fact you actually learn what to do and not do, when you have an ingame death. tagging mobs. there’s no mob tagging in everquest until you have done at least 51 percent of the damage so people can steal your kills after the battle has started and you’re being beat on by the mob, then the thief walks up and loots the mob. that caused no end of problems.
