The Return of City of Heroes and what it shows about Classic WoW

City of Heroes is back and it showed one important thing.

Not everything is remembered with rose tinted glasses, older games are just as fun if not better than you remember, even if you have less time to play then before.

City of heroes is a sort of similar game to classic, in the sense that the whole emphasis is on the journey to max level and the majority of it’s content is community created things with lots of grouping going on to get most of the content done. Specs are diverse and more personalized. Mobs hit hard, it is very easy to die while leveling. It is not a cake walk like the majority of retail right now. Everything that I read that people claim we will all “not remember correctly” or realize “we were younger and had more time” when it comes to playing an older game completely went out the window when playing this game again.

It is an actual blast to play, the community is still as friendly and informative as ever and people want to create community events or group up for missions and actually socialize while doing so. A lot of these things i can’t wait to see happen again in classic, retail just feels lifeless now with a strong emphasis on rushing through everything. It will be nice to experience the old pace of things and the sense of community that this game once had.

TLDR

An old game, that i played in 2006 that has similarities with Classic has finally come back and its just as good as i remember playing it all those years ago. Time had no effect on my memory of it or the community of the game.

Give it 6 months. You are in the honeymoon phase now.

Playing oldies but goodies has always been fun. Currently I’m playing GTA san andreas and having a blast. Anyone thinking classic isn’t going to get played is delusional.

The question is how long will it last and how far will Blizzard take it with other expansions. Time will tell.

Thats good man im glad. I hoped the same thing would happen for me with Classic… but nope.

Spent 8 minutes logged into the beta and went clamoring back to bfa. For me it’s all nostalgia, not gameplay. The game looks and feels very dated now. For me, what made classic special was how I felt playing it for the first time, not how it actually played.

I always wonder, is it spam, trolling, the report feature is so limited. oR Can we just delete the classic sub-forum since it’s clear no one wants to use it…

While I agree that CoH is still very fun to play, it’s last version was also much more recent than Vanilla WoW. When I tried a SWG Emu server a few years back I found that that game, which I had many fond memories of and introduced me to the MMO genre, I discovered that that game was no where near as enjoyable as I remembered it being. Just because one game isn’t showing it’s age much does not mean the rose tinted glasses concept is without merit.

Maybe they should add an additional report option: Wrong Sub-Forum

I’m not sure if this would belong in the Classic section or the Off-Topic Video Game section though.

The thing is, since im older now i can see the real value in videogames. If I can get 6 months of enjoyment out of Coh or Classic, than that doesn’t seem like a waste to me. Im sure many players for both games will come and go popping in and out to play here and there. But this is also happening for retail, how many people have quit bfa in its first 6 months and either only come back for updates or are gone entirely?

Like many have said, classic servers have been around for more than a decade, if it was a honeymoon phase that wouldn’t be possible. And this specific CoH server has apparently privately been out for 6 years, yet those people who were able still played on it all this time.

CoH is back? When did that happen?

I always thought it was funny that there were petty criminals in a city full of super heroes.

A few weeks ago, someone revealed that a super secret invite only server had been running ever since the live servers went down and shortly after that all the server code was leaked and within a week there were servers available.

Its weird that people are likely to keep playing free games, isn’t it?

Oh… I see they’re shut down now and in talks with NCSoft. That’ll go well.

Beautifully put. I am absolutely delighted to see that service back up and running. Best thing of all, they moved all but one of the servers to Canada. My response time is awesome now.

If you’ll excuse me, there’s a safeguard mission that needs doing

Apparently there has been a private CoX server running for a while that no one knows about, so a group under the name City of Heroes: Homecoming got a copy of the source code for the game and set up I believe 5 servers. 4 are now in my home country Canada (they moved from the Netherlands) and one is in Germany. The Homecoming servers have been up for…ah…2 or 3 weeks?

There was that big private server that went down (that ultimately led to this happening) that was heavily populated and I believe there was talk about paying for the services that was receptive.

Talk is cheap. Until it happens, it was all free. Which is a major pull for private servers.

That was the first server that came up after the leak which was shut down in a panic before anything had actually happened. There is now a different server up (actually, they have 5 servers running due to demand), but idk if posting the name of the server would get me in trouble or not so you’ll have to do a little more googling to find it.

Edit: the server name was posted above by Gassavia.

It isn’t.

The thing is a pirate server. So once NCsoft DOES decide to litigate…

COH was kind of fun, in the brief period before I got into the Vanilla Wow beta. COH kind of had the exact OPPOSITE problem that Wow had for me:

There was no loot/stuff to wear.

So yeah, my character could look cool and fun but there was no immediate reward for doing a thing.

did they actually get private servers from those gatekeepers or is it getting rebooted?
