The reason for the lack of tanks

So I have been playing a bunch of M0s. Actually, I have been doing more than I need to. I continue to play them despite being saved to them all. I play as a tank and I thought most people would appreciate a skilled tank (20+ experience last season); Boy was I wrong. I get treated like garbage in pug groups. I ran mythic necrotic wake a few times in a row, just to get a hang of the mechanics for next week.

Each run I attempted of that dungeon I was top DPS (as a guardian druid) and on some pulls, I was also top heals. I have a shaman doing 800 DPS, telling me I don’t know what I am doing, telling me I am going the wrong way when I have probably done necrotic wake about 8 times since launch and I know what I am doing (better than most anyway). Group dies, the healer is on 93% mana, and I get the blame. I am told to “slow down” so I do. I am trying to explain that you can get a buff from those giant robots if you have the correct covenant, but before I can finish my explanation, the healer, pulls the boss and instantly dies and then the group follows in death. right so…

I go through the rest of the dungeon, where I really do not even need to be, since I already am saved, and all I hear are constant complaints from DPS doing less than 1000 DPS. At the end of the dungeon I say “ty” and I am immediately removed from the group as if I have been some ungodly problem the whole time.

I really don’t know what to say. If this is the experience I am having, I can’t imagine the abuse “new tanks” are experiencing in these low-level M+. This is why those new tanks quit and why you have to wait for an hour to find a tank for your M0. I mean I may not be the “best” tank, but I was the top druid tank on raider io on my server (Illidan) before I quit playing (finished 15th, because I got bored). Illidan is the biggest horde server or one of the biggest. I am not saying I am the best player in the world, but I am certainly better than DPS doing 800 dps and I still get treated like trash, even though I am basically running these dungeons for free and with no real benefit for myself (since I am already locked). I really can’t imagine what less skilled tanks are going through right now. I can’t wait for M+ to open up again and for me to get away from this toxicity by playing in M+ dungeons 18+ or better (where there is much less toxic pugs).

I totally hear ya, but if they haven’t figured it out by now they never will.

Someone is going to come in here and tell you they never had an issue so it doesnt exist

This is one reason I gave up on playing a tank. While trying to learn the spec I was abused even though I explained I was wearing L plates, told I was the worst tank in history, etc. I got home, deleted the toon and never tried again.

I wouldn’t mind trying again but I’d only do it with guildies who are sympathetic to a learner and are playing the game for fun. This type of experience is certainly not fun.

My main is a tank and I hate it. I’ve never in all of my time playing WoW been treated like trash this much. I had a group where a priest wouldn’t say anything and just kept life gripping me wherever they wanted to go. People instead of recommending a shortcut/skip just start yelling that you need to learn to play or “omg over here”.

Most of these people are barely pushing 1k when they were at 170 but hey, that doesn’t stop them from being absolute jerks to tanks and telling them how to play.

It spills over to world quest content too. Only need 1-2 more mobs? Too bad, here comes Space Bar Billy with 10 mobs trailing behind him who expects you to pick them up. Trying to round up some mobs? Someone or multiple people will start attacking while you’re rounding up. Save someone when they bit off more than they could chew? You never get a thank you, they just mount up and ride off.

Yup, I see something fun like Kyrian Prot Pally, and feel bad that I won’t bother because I don’t find that kinda stuff fun with how people in this game treat tanks and healers.

that’s why I leave the second they give me any crap, they can have fun waiting another 30 minutes for a tank

There’s not a lack of tanks.

This is a misconception.

There’s just plenty of dps to go around since every class can dps.

I’ve done some mythic tanking and never have anyone tell me im doing something wrong because I know what I’m doing. All I see from this post is a tank player expecting special treatment because he’s playing tank

Why are these types of post always made by Tanks but never healers, why are tanks so full of themselves like healers aren’t in the same boat

I like tanking, but I’ll never do it for pugs.

There isn’t a lack of tanks in WoW, there is just a lack of tanks willing to deal with PUGs.

Eh i just dish it back out link the meter and ask why theyre trash.

I give no quarter for i expect none and sometimes a good knife fight is just whats in order.

Though most times no one even talks in a pug except to say hello tbh

Idk, I just let people die when they do stupid things and stand there. Eventually they learn to follow my lead or find another tank. Haven’t had to find a new group yet, they would rather listen and follow than waste more time finding another tank, especially if a boss is already down.

I’m usually a fairly chill tank regardless of the rest of the group is acting.
Most of the time I’m entirely silent in the group and just keep chugging along at my own pace.

You have the patience of a saint. I would’ve ditched them at the first red flag.

Content has gotten too sweaty. Casual tanking cant exist in wow anymore. There are too many mechanics and things you have to know on top of knowing the instance front and back in order to path properly, and not pathing the most effective path gets you vote kicked once the new content settles.

So they made one vital role accessible for the top 5% only and everyone wonders why there are not enough tanks. Personally i like keeping stress out my past times, and dont have the free time to get my PHD in every single instance.

I’m a new tank in SL and have had mostly positive groups…I tell them before we start I’m new to tank and said dungeon.

Normally someone will take charge and coach me , but I did have someone last night tell me I shouldn’t be tanking if I’ve never done it before…which lead me asking “Ok well how am I meant to get tanking experience”.

They continued the abuse and simply said “I don’t deserve this” and left the group. I had the other members message me apologising and saying I did the right thing.

This is why I usually stick to leveling and farming. I have every class between 50 and 60 and I really don’t know if I’ll ever tank. I rarely do dungeons anyways. I just can’t deal with that kind of stressing and anxiety. Well, time for me to start up that Ted talk by Frederik about not taking things personally. I have a theory and if I watch this video several thousand times it will turn me into an excellent MMO player who no longer takes things personally!

Yeah, there’s a reason I went Pure DPS this expansion.

Tanking and healing can eff right off.

Besides, as rare as good tanks and healers are… strong DPS with good attitudes who don’t blame the healer or tank because they suck at WoW are rarer still. So I get to still feel like a snowflake even still!

My solution to all of these problems is to simply avoid pugging. Pugs in this game have always been a lottery game for who you’re going to get. Even using tools like Raider IO you’re still not guaranteed to get people that are able to cleanly execute mechanics and make a smooth run.

I haven’t had an issue. BUT. If you are having issues and you’re honestly just running these dungeons for fun at this point… Why stick around?
