Why are they so crummy? I just looted a chest in burning steps surrounded by level 54 elites, having to solo three of them, for it to contain 17 silver and level x3 level 22 mana potions.
This is NOT authentic. I specifically remember on my rogue in vanilla I would go through scarlet monastery pick pocketing and looting chests. They nearly 100% of the time contained at least one green and around 10% of the time had a blue in them.
Lol. Let me give you the short version of my favorite vanilla story. On my first character, at around level 15 I went exploring. It was a horrible mistake and I ended up spirit rezzing in searing gorge. In my attempts to get out of searing gorge, I discovered a chest. I thought for sure a chest this high level would fund my wildest dreams for ages to come… so I tried to open it.
I musts have died 20 times trying to open that chest, but I finally got it open. After all that work I was rewarded with a couple silver and a few pieces of cheese.
If you think the current chests are not authentic you need to stop looking through your rose colored glasses.
Some of the time people are selectively leaving the moist cornbread. As a dwarf (without herbalism or mining), I open a lot of chest. The ones without a couple of silver have been looted by someone already taking the better stuff.
Chest loot has pretty much always been pretty underwhelming. The loot you get in classic matches the balancing I saw in Vanilla perfectly.
If as others have claimed there were early nerfs, it was because farmers were running bots in Azshara and such, just doing loops looting all the chests with minimal mob or player competition.
