I was thinking of getting a new graphics card for my computer as my current one isn’t raytracing compatible. However for me to get another one of this quality would cost a few hundred dollars. Will the raytracing feature make that much of a difference? Worth getting a new graphics card over?
Personally, I wouldn’t get a new one solely for Raytracing. It’s a fairly new technology and I think it’ll be a minute before we see a lot of games that use it well. For Shadowlands in particular, everything I’ve seen says the effect is minimal (it’s only Raytracing Shadows at the moment) and it’s a huge hit to your FPS even with a top end card.
Idk, buy me one and I’ll let you know my opinion
Researched it a bit, apparently it’s for eye candy like scenic games and such, fps or otherwise no. Wow isn’t that graphic intense so I wouldn’t say so.
Not worth it yet. At some point in the future maybe.
Here’s Blizzard’s announcement for it:
I think the shadows look nice, but not drop-an-extra-$350+ nice. Shadows are usually one of the first things I give up to boost my FPS though.
I think it’d be more than that if you want it to be playable. I read a post yesterday about using it. They said they have a 2080 Ti and went from easily capping at 100 with everything on Ultra to struggling to hit 60 once they turned it on.
In games with modern graphics? Yes.
In a game like WoW with graphics from 2004? No.
Ray Tracing is another selling gimmick for people to buy top-end cards, when in reality most games are going to standardize around the consoles than high-performance machines.
You mean the consoles that are going to support it?
both Sony and Microsoft have already promised ray tracing support on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett.

A budget solution to a trending fad current year. I guarantee that the ‘Ray Tracing’ for consoles wont be on the same par as high end PC’s.
Ray Tracing is a fad to sell high-end cards. Consoles are literally budget PC’s.
I don’t think so. I was going through the beta and wondering why my FPS was so much worse than it was when playing normal WoW, and I figured out why. The performance hit from Ray Tracing just isn’t worth the trade off I think. And my computer’s good.
Don’t buy anything yet. Wait for the new AMD and Nvidia cards to come out in 2-3 months, then see how they advance the technology.
I have a RTX card and I ain’t going to be using it. I don’t see the point of it being added to WoW. Most likely a very small portion of the playerbase will have the hardware to utilize it and even so, the performance loss is not worth it.
Good link. That will help me make a decision more clearly.
No, it makes the shadows not fit with rest of art style and its very taxing
