The problem with Skyreach

Skyreach is a neat talent but in application it feels really awkward to use. Hit boxes are not created equally. It feels bad when I use my filler and its constantly darting me underneath the target even though I’m already in range. While a really fun ability for WPvP or PvP in general, in PvE its awful but is the best option in terms of damage. It would be nice if there was either a glyph or someway to turn off the dash.

It feels random. You’re in range, and sometimes you get pulled further in and sometimes you don’t, which ultimately means I’m sitting there deathly afraid to use a bread and butter ability over it when there’s stuff on the ground because I never know when it’s going to yank me forward and when it’s not… and there’s always stuff on the ground.

In PvE I don’t find the jump useful… I mean unless it’s Halloween and I want the game to turn into a horror game because I get the same scares and jolts to my heartrate being pulled forward into AoE or I have an area debuff on me that I need to keep away and I’m just fine with positioning by edging the circle near the other melee except oops I leapt forward and hit somebody, or the spider boss in Vault and I’m being yanked towards the edge ready to walk right off if I’m not careful. If I want to be scared crapless several times a day, Skyreach is great.

The problem is far worse than anyone may realize. I was doing SMB 16 and attacking one of the worm adds on third boss. Skyreach is not moving me in closer than needed until the mob puts down its avoidable damage line. At this point the next skyreach pulls me right in front of it. I tested it again multiple times and it only ever was putting me in front of the damage when the line goes out. If the avoidable damage isn’t there, skyreach is content on letting me dps on the end of the hit box. Either someone at Blizzard hated this ability and became a troll or it is choosing where the hit box is based on what the mob is doing.

Yeah, the number of times this ability has gotten me killed because it launched me into bad on the ground is terrible. I know there’s obviously some skill here about when to be careful and I’m getting better but the unreliability of it, the inconsistency is forcing me to remember all the hit boxes of all the adds. Kinda crazy… wish there was some second circle maybe they could show which shows the actual hit box radius.
This expansion has a bunch of weird hit box related things too, some huge dragons with tiny hit boxes, to the middle auction house dragon when in their whelp form has a really small hit box and interact range. Hopefully, someone normalizes this stuff.

It sucks on CoS last boss and SMBG with the skeletons, as well as with all the random circles. Fury of Xuen was simming around 400 dps less, and i figured I’d make that dps up by not randomly dying because skyreach wanted to move me in when it didn’t the previous time.

Oh my god… I cannot believe it got worse. Storming weeks… Skyreach is even more miserable.

@blizz Please allow us to turn it off. Please…

Just run a different build lol. It functions exactly like it did in shadowlands.

Skyreach is quite a bit ahead.

I ran keefers last season as I liked it instead of invokers and you just learn to stop hitting tiger palm. Drop port before the problematic pulls if you’re constantly getting gibbed.

Okay cool. Good for you? Still doesn’t make skyreach poorly designed.

Just saying I went s3 and 4 with it so maybe I’m just seasoned for a few months of use to not mindlessly press tiger palm waiting on an aoe cast to go off. I just don’t think it’s poorly designed. The charge it does can be beneficial. 2 casters split just out of melee range of each other and tank can’t get them grouped. Tiger palm gets you right on them whereas roll would put you too far since they removed roll cancel.

Okie doke.

Don’t you just love when a mobs starts a whirlwind attack and you’re just outside of it in melee range but then skyreach keeps pulling you into it. Great talent design blizzard…

I love the talent. Feels like I’m rewarded for using it well, but punished for using it badly. Personally I’ve had no issue with random jumping, other then the worm boss in Shadowmoon, because for some reason it/their hitboxes are stuffed. You can actually cast FoF 1 yard away and have it do no damage.

Also love how it trivializes storming by allowing you to dash back in if you accidentally get hit.

I love and HATE this ability. I really wish it only ever transported you to the edge of a hitbox or very slightly inside the edge of the hitbox.

The amount of times I have died getting placed in precarious places due to this talent is pretty frustrating.

It rough on frontals or aoe in M+. Its such habit to hit it, as I am running out of an aoe or cleave, I hit it dash in and get smooshed.

Its a me problem I know, I just have to not use it when a cleave or aoe is happening, but man id like to glyph out of the dash or something.

Either a glyph or just turn it into 2 selections in the tree like Chi Burst and Chi Wave… one with the dash and one without. I died on Terros yesterday running out of the big circle you’re supposed to avoid… I’m running out spamming Tiger Palm hoping I can squeeze one out before I go out of range… and oops, pulled right back into the circle and killed. And yes I know that might’ve been my fault for not thinking ahead but it functions like a suicide button sometimes, and I don’t even know if I was technically in range for Tiger Palm to have hit without the need to dash or not.

The benefits that come from that ability massively outweigh any shortcomings, but to be fair every good choice should have a drawback of its own.

There are very few final talents that can get you killed on a relatively frequent basis using your core builder. There needs to be a way to turn it off, or it should port you to the edge of the hit box - not literally on top of the mob. There are a ridiculous amount of times I am hitting a mob and perfectly happy, go to top up chi and teleported on top of it even though I was already in melee range (that is usually what gets me killed). If you can hit the mob, the teleport shouldn’t go off.
