So. Awkward conversation. I came back to the game in BFA from sitting out in cata and boy oh boy do most guilds have problems. I’ve seen a few recurring things while trialing this expansion I would like to point out.
- the gm and the raid lead should be two different people
- just because you scraped by getting carried to CE does not mean your raid lead material or you should start a new guild based on that alone.
- being cliquey but denying being in a clique is the worst
- If your a GM/RL and your playing half the time everyone else is and hating recruitment behind your position then we have problems
- promoting officers because they are cool is some basic behavior. People who are officers deserve the spot because of the extra the put in
- if someone disagrees with you then flexing your position in gchat is embarrassing
I’ve bumped into so many guilds this expansion that are just flat out not enjoyable to be in, had guilds disband while I was trialing because recruitment issues, personal drama, or someone thinking they can do a better job and taking a portion of the team. Finding a home has been a challenge as most guilds hinge their existence around the raid team. There is minimal community in most groups.
I firmly believe at this point( outside of burnout) that the reason I don’t have fun anymore in wow is b cause of the issue I have with finding a guild. I haven’t been in a guild yet this expansion that has more than one key running group that won’t complain if someone else joins (as everything is a carry).
I know this is a bit of a rant but guilds are being made for the wrong reasons by the wrong people and it’s frustrating when you join a group just to find that leadership is there to be carried/feel important

I agree at some point, but some can do both fine.
It’s been like that since ages, I don’t think you can expect that to not happen. The goal is to join one basicly if you don’t want to be left alone. It’s basicly a work on both sides, you need to make known and work your way into people trust.
Yes I’ve seen this happening, it will most often just lead to the guild dying or having basicly someone else do the job.
Sometime you gotta close a discussion, guilds are not pure democracy. At the end if you disagree too much then you’re free to leave.
Some people got their use, but officers nowadays are not officers that we had before. They’re mostly there because they do some things that might be time to time needing the officers role.
I think there is still some guild that have a good atmostphere, but for sure you will have to work harder to find one. You can normally get a good feeling with their description on wowprogress or watching them raid if they have someone streaming with voice.
Guilds are a bit of a joke atm

If the guild leader does both jobs well, why exactly do you think he should stop being a guild leader or stop being a raid leader?
I have struggled all BfA, both Horde and Alliance, to find a fun guild with some socialization. The guild finder is a joke, cuz most aren’t active at this point so it’s a waste of time to /who “guild name”. No one’s on or those who are can’t invite.
I truly miss a fun guild.
Yea I have been in a couple of guilds in bfa where the environment is just not fun at all. Sucks the fun right out of the game. Who you are with is more important than what you are doing. In wow and life.
Pretty much given up at this point. Seems like even getting people to talk in /g is a chore these days.
Waste of time for me really, just running w/ friends on another server.
Edit: Since the realm forums are dead for all practical reasons. If anyone is recruiting on TN I’m all ears. Not doing much at the minute, just came back to the game but I used to be a decent raid & small group content healer.
There are bad guilds out there for sure but some great one also. I tend to think guild leaders that also raid lead tend to run smoother and rarely do I see them being carried, if anything its the opposite most GMs work pretty hard to set an example and have there character raid ready and know the fights better then most.
Cliques are 100% real some guilds its worst then others but I think there is a fine line between “clique” and “core”. Remember your walking into a group that chances are have played together for a extended period of time, I personally play with real life friends and people iv met ingame but have now played with for years. your never gonna stroll in and have the same chemistry as those people do, that takes time and investment on your end as well as understanding.
Recruiting isn’t everyone’s thing but the guild leader should at the very least have an officer that does enjoy doing it and has the core values of the guild in mind when they recruit. As far promoting officers go I don’t think anyone but the leadership team really has much of a say here, its who they are comfortable with and that’s really that.
Your right there are tons of bad guilds out there and lazy leaders but my experience has been you get what you put into it most of the time. If you show up, your friendly and reliable you will start to create meaningful relationships with people and it changes your experience greatly. This isn’t something that happens in your first day or week or usually even month for most so if your one of those people that guild hop constantly I can understand why your view of guilds isn’t a great one.
The problem is other people. The solution is to stop designing all endgame content to require other people.
MMO? Not requiring other people?
Would you not be better of playing a single player game?

The second Blizzard announces a singleplayer RPG set in Azeroth you people will never hear from me again.

It is my opinion that, there can be a “perfect” guild. Something I was actually very lucky to be a brief part of until everyone eventually drifted out of WoW, as it tends to happen.
-
GM and RL can be different people. Heck, you can have multiple RLs if your guild is large and can run multiple groups.
-
Drawing on last point - have raid times and days suit all sorts of people. 2 different raid groups is reasonable.
-
Care about your guildmates rather than progression (unless progression is your very main focus). Hear out their doubts, direct them to content to learn classes and tactics, and if you pick the right RLs, give them the responsibility to teach new players. Heck, why not have a “newbie” group?
-
Make it more than just “we raid once a week, then we never talk again”. This can be hard to achieve, but it can be achieved - keep raid atmospheres chill and relaxed (allow jokes, please!), and allow yourself/RLs to be available to answer queries outside of raids in off time to at least some extent.
-
Notice the cliquism and try to break free of it. If you have friends you brought to your guild from elsewhere, that’s alright - but anyone attempting to be a part of your friend group shouldn’t be automatically shunned.
-
Drawing from 5., don’t be biased. Independent loot is a blessing, and respecting a drop is necessary. Pass already obtained loot to newer entrants looking to gear unless you direly need it for something, and don’t get too defensive over the issue. There’s always next week!
-
In general, be inclusive to guildies! You do not need to spend hundreds of minutes for it by being active in the Discord or constantly holding group events - foster the guild’s identity, knuckle boop virtually, and stick together!
It sounds fantastical, but I can sincerely say it is possible as I was once a part of it. And I believe that if GMs believe in their guild and not just having a group to progress with, it is possible.

There is no other reason to be in a guild now though, that’s not the guild’s fault that’s Blizzard’s.
With cross realm grouping, sharding, and LFG there is next to 0 reason to be in a guild besides raiding. Very few casual guilds, if any, exist now because of the aforementioned reasons.
Need to find people to PvP with? LFG.
Need to find people to do M+ with? LFG.
Need to find people to do a quest? LFG.
No other reason for any guilds to exist besides raiding guilds.
It’s always weird reading one of these threads coming from Wrymrest Accord. We have an abundance of active and social guilds. I’ve yet to have difficulty finding a social guild… non-toxic guilds on the other hand…
I would like to see the OP’s answer to this as well. Our GM is also our RL, and has been for the last three expansions that I’ve been in this guild. He has given raid leadership over to another on occasion, because real life has a nasty habit of intruding…but he handles it all rather well.
I don’t really agree with the title.
You can most assuredly have an otherwise decent GM that has a full blown three ring circus of an officer corps.
nah, they exist tons of them
they just dont really do anything or have a purpose
there are a lot of great single player games out there, though not from blizzard
can i ask what you do in wow? personally i dont do much now besides a few bgs a week, i cant really tell what you do from the profile
Which means they aren’t set in Azeroth, which is the setting I want to be playing in.
PvE mostly. Grinding rep, running quests, alts, (slowly) training professions.
Problem: Guilds are a problem because of x, y, z.
Answer: Form my own guild
Outcome: Problem solved
