The Price of Progress? What Monetization Could You Live With in SOD/Classic+

Blizz needs to make money, they like to monetize… You think they’re gonna pump more dev time into the retail train with its shiny cash shop, or keep the good times rolling in SoD where our gear’s the only thing that matters?

Let’s say you’re a dev trying to convince the higher-ups that SoD deserves more love (aka, more dev hours). You gotta find a way to make some coin without triggering a full-blown rage quit from the community. What are your thoughts on these options?

  • Mounts
  • Cosmetics
  • Race/Sex change

Bonus question: If other players could just flip a switch and make all that shop stuff invisible (like your epic mount turns into a plain old tiger on their screen), would you still be tempted?

I already requested they also add paid name changes in shop too. My shadow priest has disc in their name and i need to change it XD

its a fine line, dont like the token, don’t like level boosts, but if things like name change could allow for more dev time poured into the game we love, I can make compromises…

I already pay them $15 a month just to play SoD. Why do they need additional monetization when they give us bare-bones developer support?

if you have a limited resource like development time, who is going to get the most of it, MOP (that makes money outside of the sub) or SOD…

Also in my example you are not required to pay extra to play the game as you are now.

Blizzard has misled us from the beginning. They announced SoD as a passion project driven by a small team that was dedicated to the project, then they took that team and had them focus on Cata and most likely MoP now as well. A cash shop wont change any of this. We don’t even know what is next.

Honestly - none of these. I don’t want any of this stuff in a shop. That’s part of what ruined retail and the current path of classic 2019 and on in my opinion. I would rather if they release classic+ to charge us an expansion pack price with the promise of “you get X number of new raids, this content etc” then any of these mount/cosmetic options.

Just my personal take since you asked. Probably an unpopular opinion.

Why did they pull folks away to work on Cata/Mop… My point is that if we allow for some things from the modern cash shop, sod could become a first class citizen.

Allegedly because the code for those games was a complete mess, and the project wasn’t going to be able to release on the deadline they had committed to.

If sod was as high a priority, they would have to handle it differently… Imagine a larger dedicated team, creating new art assets…

It’s a valid opinion, and it does solve the problem of making sod a priority. I think the impetus behind my suggestions were that they could be done quickly. I want to keep sod going, I don’t want a classic plus if I am back to a one button rotation. I think SOD could be amazing if they just gave it some love.

Activision-blizzard has a current market cap of around the 75 billion USD range. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the obscene number of people paying $15 a month to expect a little more than re-used assets and more appropriate support without additional micro transactions, even in its (probably) most niche version.

Agreed. But blizzard sees it otherwise. All of the goofs/bugs we fave seen indicate that the project is held in Les esteem than retail and cata/mop. I want to change that.

They are onto something with SOD and I want to see them take it farther.

Id be totally fine with the auction house mount in SoD.

Would you be ok with someone having the ability to flip a toggle that would make your mount look like an existing classic model (lets not think about size considerations)

I like the idea of a toggle to turn off stuff like transmog and store mounts if you don’t want to see them… if you toggle this, no one sees your goodies either.

Pay an entire dev team to spend months working on developing new content for a niche version of an older game with no monetization outside of a $15 sub that is shared between every version of wow.

Or reskin a brontosaur ah mount on retail and sell it for a limited time for $90 and make millions.

It’s an easy choice for blizz.

would you be able to stomach having that brontosaur mount in sod? Would you still buy it if folks had a toggle that would make it look like a classic asset on their screen…

I’m fine with it being in game and not even being able to toggle.

I think majority of classic players strongly disagree and would throw a fit if any type of paid cosmetics or wow token was introduced to classic, sod, or classic +. Still remember the spit weak aura for the paid boost and mount in tbc classic.

Without paid micro transactions, sod and classic + will get bare bones support and a split dev team responsible for managing several different versions of the game.

I agree, I also think with more love it could be the most popular version of the game…
