Right now is about the time for Blizzard to come clean and admit their mistake and try to fix it.
The people who signed up to play day 1 Classic are a mixed bag. They are a lot of retail people who wanted to experience what classic was like, and the die hard classic loving group.
Putting aside the classic group that might not enjoy the game and might not stick around we have the die hards. The die hards subbed in advance, boosting sub numbers, reserving names and wanting to see the release. These players have a very high propensity to not go anywhere. They are split into two groups, those who have been playing on private servers and those who have been not playing for years just waiting for a chance to go back.
Lets just pretend that last night this group was split 50/50 with retail players checking out Classic. It wasn’t, (there were far more hardcore Classic lovers), but lets just pretend. Now lets pretend 100% of the retail crowd wont stick around and that 20% of the die hard players only stick around. That means that with the current server populations, if they remove layering at the end of phase I we are looking at 20 to 30k people PER SERVER. That is not going to work and Blizzard knows this.
Blizzard has made a huge mistake by not adding in enough servers. People formed guildes and planned out their stay based on pre-launch information. Groups of people coordinated with each other.
That leaves Blizzard with only one option. Open up a ton more servers, give people the chance to move to those servers (NOW), and hope they do. Because the largest deterrent to people playing classic long term is server queues. I am not talking about this week or next week, I am talking about long term server queues.
