The Plague Event is Fine, but only if it's Opt-In

This is a disingenuous argument. The tree burning was strictly a PvE event and one was not forced to participate in it. You will be forced to participate in this event if you login whether you want to or not.

I have no way to say “hey players, I’m not in the mood to be turned into a zombie and participate in your no rewards nonsense slaughterfest. I just want to go to the AH to get a flask and go about my business.”

Player agency is being disrespected here. If your event is so fun and dandy, you’ll have scores of people wanting to participate whether there are rewards or not. There is no reason why those who do not want to participate has to either go grossly out of their way to avoid this or be forced to endure it.

this event was fun the last time around, it will be fun this time around.

It’s fun for about five minutes, then it would be nice to actually play the game I’m paying for.

This event should’ve stayed in the trash where it belonged, but I guess it’s just one more sign that the current dev team doesn’t have enough new ideas to get by.
