The original race mounts

So I was looking up classic stuff again and it got me thinking of the og mounts.
Say these guys are available on retail release for you to earn.
Which mount would you choose? Did you like the armored ones more and would prefer those instead?
Any favorites?
If they were added, do you want them to stay or go?

Personally I really like the troll raptors, the colors are nice and it’s iconic. The night elf sabers are pretty cool as well, I always really liked the white one. Same goes for the red orc wolf.
I would probably choose the Mottled raptor overall though, I think it’s color scheme is fun.

Here’s a list of them too!

I prefer the armored mounts personally, but I think the original mounts should stay in at their original 1k price tag. This adds another gold sink to the game, which will be needed since classic is “endless”, but uses only vanilla content to do so. Plus, it gives people a way to show off their wealth by riding around on a more expensive mount.

I’ll be riding my swift white stallion all day bub

It bugs me that they call one of the human mounts a “White” Stallion. That isn’t an actual horse color (details). That horse is a Gray. They get Palomino right though.

The Raptors are the coolest ones I think, followed by the Frostsaber and Nightsaber.

You do make a point about classic being “endless”. I can see the appeal of removing them for authenticity but keeping them would add a neat goal for players to work towards earning.

Everyone knows the PVP mounts are the best. Or the Wintersaber.

Put them in at 5000g. I’ll still buy my white mechanostrider and frost saber.

It’s interesting to me that while the mounts have been unavailable for most of WoW’s history, they still updated the models for the Green and Teal Kodo in Legion. They even made a new version of the Black Qiraji Tank mount in Legion. Odd.

Anyway, I always loved the raptors and kodo so if I was going Horde I’d definitely pick them up. But as I plan on going Alliance first in Classic, while none of the unarmored versions stand out in the same way I kinda like the descriptions of the robot chikkins so I’d likely hunt rep for them.

Also… I notice that there are no unarmored Forsaken mounts in the Retired list. Did they always have armored skeleton horses?

Yes, they did. The Baron’s mount was in from the start too. It sparked envy from the other races.

I do find it interesting how undead started out with the only armored mounts. I think it’s because of the fact it shares a model with rivendare so it was easily to use that as it still fit undead. It was early vanilla after all.

NuKodo is like super lime green though.

My favorite mounts are the ones certain classes get for free - Warlock and Paladin mounts, and Druid travel form. It’s a really nice bonus for choosing certain classes, and helps with saving gold.

Edit: Oh and maybe Shaman gets a travel form too? I don’t remember.

For sure, not having to buy your mount immediately makes saving gold so much easier.

Shamans get a 40% speed wolf at like 20, so it’s pretty close to mount level. I’m still a bit surprised they gave them that so early, maybe it’s a benefit for having to do the water totem quest who knows.

You mean like the Pride Raptor? I got the Winterspring Frostsaber in live and its still my favourite mount.

Will get the racial NE Saber and a War Ram. Might try for a Frostsaber this time around, however I’m not sure if those were 60% only in Vanilla.

They’re 100%. They’re the only fast Saber without armor after 1.4.

White is a colour of horse. Dominant white horses are sometimes entirely unpigmented.

Oh boy, we could horse nerd into a whole thing on that lol.

White is very commonly associated with Lethal White Syndrome which the foals rarely live. Technically yes a White horse is possible but highly undesirable. That is what I meant by (details).

White horses that survive often have other genetic diseases as well including HERDA. Horrible way to go, most are euthanized before it can set in.

The four most common colors people think of as “White” are older Grays, Cremelos which are a Chestnut with two homozygous dilution genes, Perlinos which are Bays with two homozygous dilution genes and Smokey White/Gray which is a Black horse with two homozygous dilution genes.

If the horse has black skin and any sign of black on the points, mane or tail it is a Gray.

Yeah, okay. Looking at the ‘white stallion’ model I agree that this is a gray. But it is still the case that pure white horses do exist, and they’re not always unhealthy.

White Stallion
Arctic Wolf
Ancient Frostsaber
Ivory Raptor

(Anyone sensing a theme here? =P)

I did it in Vanilla, managed to get to exalted with Orgrimmar to get the wolf mount for Thunder here. For the life of me, I cannot remember how I did it.
