The Original Lore

I am not a lore fanatic, but will be so very happy to see the lore restored to its Vanilla state.

For example the senseless death of Cairne has not happened.

The entire story seemed to take directions based on a silly ‘which favorite characters should we kill next’ methodology as the xpacs rolled on.

Anyone have lore they are glad is set back to a ‘proper’ state?

I can’t wait for all of the lore to become vanilla again.

For anyone that wants to read up on vanilla lore without the changes and retcons, I think this wiki-history page should be decent:

wow[DOT]gamepedia[DOT]com/index[DOT]php?title=Timeline_(unofficial)&oldid=401887

Sylvanas rocking the Night Elf model…

just kidding…

Related to the “no senseless death of Cairne” thing, generally getting rid of the “the Alliance is about lawful good overdrive, and the Horde attacks it constantly for no good reason” thing.

I am looking forward to not seeing any slavers operating anywhere in Horde lands.

King Magni Bronzebeard will be a flesh dwarf again, not some weird living-diamond mouthpiece for the elements. (Said transformation adding insult to injury by taking place in a book and not actually shown in-game.)

Garrosh pissing off back to Outland where we will never ever have to meet him.

King Varian Wrynn disappearing while on a diplomatic mission once more, and by extension, the resurrection of the Stormwind/Lady Prestor/Onyxia storyline.

Westfall reset back to empty farms overrun by Defias gangs, not a combination homeless encampment/CSI episode.

Theramore un-bombed.

There’s more, but that’s enough to start with.

it’ll be nice playing a version of WoW where I can actually take the lore seriously; it really adds to immersion and how authentic the game feels

no longer will you see the every player’s name being yelled by quest NPCs before you even hit level 40; even that gives a “chosen one” feel, and thats an awful feeling to have for an MMO
no longer will there be cinematic cutscenes for stuff thats really supposed to be epic but ain’t because its easy enough for a huntard whos barely paying attention to solo it in questing gear
there won’t be any more retarded or half-$&!ed or scummy decisions in place such as “there MUST be a lich king” or CORRUPTION EVERYWHERE or THIS LORE GUY DIES THAT LORE GUY DIES HE DIES TOO or quest NPCs doing some generic taunting stuff while they unavoidably run away from the player character in an attempt to make the player be mad at the NPC(who evades being killed by the soloing player 3+ times) so that they’re compelled to finish the quest chain where said NPC turns into a dungeon or raid boss therefore play the game for longer or raids being a double slot machine(titan/warforging) instead of a single slot machine or “hey, heres a GREAT idea… REVERSE CORRUPTION”, or THE big bad of big bads suddenly being a good guy all along or vice versa, or levelling up your neck, or warmode being implemented for an expansion pack where ALL OF THE ENDGAME CONTENT TAKES PLACE ON AN ALLIANCE-DOMINATED ISLAND WHERE ALL THE ALLIANCE PLAYERS ARE AND A HORDE-DOMINATED ISLAND WHERE ALL THE HORDE PLAYERS ARE

no, vanilla WoW had lore that you could ACTUALLY take seriously; no major lore characters acted like a freaking idiot just because the writers told them to, and there wasn’t any artificial suspense either

and the player character wasn’t the chosen one either; you were just a nobody like everyone else was, and you didn’t get to boss around REXXAR, the champion of the horde
allies used to be afraid of that guy, and sooner or later, even the alliance’s and horde’s faction leaders will be chumps compared to the player character thats wearing nothing but non-world quest gear

just because the item level skyrockets with every expansion pack, of which there are many, doesn’t mean that the player character has to be the chosen one while major lore characters are reduced to chumps; you can kill off a few major bad guys, sure, but usually, they should just be sending their generals and lieutenants at them or however

when do we get varian back again?

Varian comes back wotlk.

will be nice to have thrall back again but i have never played horde in vanilla. does he have much interaction with the players?

egads gnome starting area is the dwarf starting area. have to traverse that tunnel to get to kharanos. ah well, at least wow doesnt deduct xp if you die.

thanks. so do we uncover onyxia before tbc or during? and if before, who is running sw during tbc?

Thrall will talk briefly to anyone who goes to his throne room. He gives a few quests (Ragefire Chasm, Blackrock Depths, Onyxia).

Onyxia gets uncovered before the Burning Crusade. Bolvar is regent during the Burning Crusade (as he is, officially, when Onyxia is really running things). Bolvar is the human racial leader who the Horde get honor points for killing.

No more Naaru right? I liked it when the Light was depicted as a spiritual/supernatural force and not the natural force of an alien crystal thing.

Yea to me he doesn’t much resemble the character he became in later xpacs.

Southshore won’t be covered in green slime

The meaningless death of Cairne and the burning of Teldrassil are the two things that bother me the most about the progression of WoW lore.

Retcons eh? What are the worst?

WoW lore was decent during vanilla but the quality after WOTLK went into reddit self insert stories you see in some fan fiction story full of tropes. I sometimes wonder if blizz just hired people from reddit to write down the story with all the memes, self inserts and boring predictable tropes now. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Hard to take it seriously after that expansion when they added Kung Fu Pandas and Pokemon battles.

MoP was decent at least the story made sense and there was very little self inseting, WoD the story made no sense, Legion story made sense but it was kinda cringy at times with stuff like " I am my scars" BFA story makes no sense and is full of self inserts memes and cringe.

It’d be nice if there’s an alternate universe out there with only vanilla wow and maybe wotlk as it’s only expansion. That was the only one that really fit vanillas style.
