The Open World: A Rogue's Perspective

Let me start by saying I have played a rogue for a very long time. Originally it was for PvP. Eventually, it was more for the aesthetic. Now, it is mostly just Role-playing. However, for a brief moment in Legion, Rogues really had something amazing. Their class hall felt like a true den of iniquity, and pick pocketing still had a relevant mechanic.

Blizz, I don’t know if you ever read these posts, but I would love to go back and reclaim a few things from the Rogue’s history.

  1. I would love a new pick pocketing system. Give us that real thief sort of vibe again.
  2. Locked Doors. In DeadMines and Blood Furnace (I think) there were locked doors that rogues could open without going around, or alerting NPCs. I would love to pick locks on doors again.
  3. Open World chests. I miss the thrill of finding a locked chest and popping it open to see what was inside. Never found anything amazing, but the feeling was a delight. Maybe we could drop a few locked chests in the open world, and take the old Dwarven “Find Treasure” mechanic and make something new like “Sniff Out Gold” where rogues, when stealthed could find hidden chests that need to be unlocked.

I’m just daydreaming, but it felt good to say what I miss most about playing a rogue, and really hope one day they get that sense of flavor back somehow.

I’d love for Pick Locks, Pick Pockets and Swirlyball to be useful for rogues again. Those are some of the charms of Vanilla that we’ve lost along the way.

Rogue fantasy has been slowly going down the drain over the years.

I think they thought they had something with Outlaw, but it hasn’t been received like they expected.

All the classes are all magical and mystical and summoning thunder now like we’re Thor and Rogue is still over off to the side juggling daggers and pick pocketing bums and proceeding to flip the coin they got out of the bums pocket then act like it’s “fate bound” that they stole a wooden coin from a vagrant.

I know they tried to shoehorn Lillain Voss into the story as a Rogue character. They usually put Rogues in the story to make up for their jank af, outdated, rusty class fantasy, gotta give them SOMETHING to do, like the third wheel in an M. Night Shyamalan movie.

if by ‘swirly ball’ you mean distract, that’s still very much used especially for patrols in dungeons.

  1. The pickpocketing system can never really be expanded upon because when it was first introduced, it was deliberately designed so it would never be super profitable. They would either have to just accept that rogues could make money from it or make it even more of a niche for specific scenarios.
  2. Locked Doors are still around. Are they common? No. Do they still show up from time to time? Yes.
  3. open world chests are just something that over time was phased out. You still find them in the old world but at some point in wows history, they stopped bothering with them. Outside of Classic, I don’t even remember the last time I saw a chest during a current expansion and I’ve mained a rogue since original BC.

All in all, it’s more or less just stuff lost to time as the game has strayed away from its RP roots and focuses more on the gameplay.

yeah legion was good - too bad there are bots in the game because all the other stuff you used to be able to get prior to that from pick pocketing was pretty great at times.

there are some locked chests on Siren Isle but rogues can’t open them…

I love pick pocketing. Getting items that start quests only Rogues can do would be a lot of fun.

Mythics won’t allow it, because it would mean a Rogue was a requirement for every group.

They started with one, but, as with every thing in this game, other classes got mad that rogues had access to a revenue stream they didn’t and cried that it was unfair. So, it got nerfed into the dust.

I wanna put poison in peoples pockets. Silent death /chef’s kiss

Detection is, or was, swirlyball.

Its what let’s you see traps to disable

Non-rogue here. Whats Swirlyball?

There are already “Rogue-like” interactions available within TWW dungeons. City of Threads, Ara-Kara and Cindermead Brewery all have interactive nodes near the start that give access to a buff. Presently these are profession-locked (Engineering and Tailoring) in addition to at least Priest for CoT.

They could do something similar for rogues.

Why oh why does looting break stealth? You can pick pocket without breaking stealth but an inanimate corpse? A huge ruckus apparently.

Never gonna happen again. Dungeons aren’t made for adventuring anymore. They’re designed for running through them as fast as possible which would mean rogue, or any other person/item that can open locked doors would become mandatory and that’s not part of Blizzards philosophy.

I wasn’t thinking about mythic at all. They could have them in Normal and Heroic only. They still don’t have to be valuable and rare items, just something to show rogues still matter.

There were workarounds before. Smiths could make keys, engineers could make explosives

It’d be great to find locked chests again as Lock Boxes don’t feel the same.
The chance to get a rare treasure (a gem or expansion currency) from Pick-pocketing would really be cool too!
