The Old Forums

Do ya’ll remember the old forums? When threads had pages with a max of 20 posts per page? Do you remember the lounge threads where people would race to be the one to create the next lounge when capping the previous’ thread? The Warcraft Elimination games we’d play? Man, I wish we could do those again but they relied on how the old forums worked in order to play.

There were always troll threads, and an abundance of “Sylvanas did nothing wrong!”

I hardly remember. I do remember the dislike button, and I think there were X amount of replies per page instead of the endless stream we have now. I remember how hype it was for this dumpster to get a new coat of paint. Other than that… I got nothing.

edit: oh yeah, I remember most of the hype being that it was a million times more mobile friendly than it was before, so you can troll on the go!

I think this still happens, saw it a bit ago for the human megathread I think.

Good times. Now people just spam report to disagree instead of a thumbs down.

I miss the dislike button. You can’t have a upvote or like and not a dislike.

They auto populate now when a thread caps.

Yeah, having a system with a like button but no dislike is sketchy, it just screams that they’re trying to create a false sense of positivity by making it harder to be negative about things.

Whether Blizzard likes it or not (no pun intended), we are essentially voting on opinions when we like/dislike things that are said. If any election was was staged where voting one way was a simple tick of a box, but voting the other way required you to sit down and write a paragraph explaining why you want to vote the other way, there’s nobody on earth that would call that legitimate lol

All they needed to do was remove the auto-bury functionality that came with a certain amount of dislikes, i honestly feel like they removed them because they got sick of seeing their white knights getting disliked into oblivion for sticking up for Blizzard’s latest bad move that angered the community.

My favorite thread of all time, the “One Eyed Willy,” pet post by a mom

I think it’s more the system of likes being a matter of “I agree, or that was funny” which would be spammy if everyone was just posting that they agree, then they expect people who disagree to post something like, “I disagree and here are some reasons why” instead of just slapping a post with a “Nuh uh” downvote.

Here’s a snapshot of the forum from near launch day back in 2004 on…

archive.org

I tried clicking a few topics and the actual messages aren’t archived but it is interesting to see what the topics were back then.

The mass flag as spam does the job as the go to dislike. But nobody likes the white knights upholding the dumb takes that are bad so the bury function was nice

I can’t recall the taste of food, nor the sound of water, nor the touch of grass.

Was fun before lounge threads were a thing, people would just swam a dead thread like parasites and everyone would hang there and feast on its corpse

Then do it again the moment they capped that one

I never touched the GD Lounge, but I was active in the Story Forum Lounge. I even made a story forum lounge archive post and updated it as more were created.

I miss the expansion forums mostly
But I guess they got scared of all the negative feedback
