The "new player" tag idea

I know this has been poopoo’d before cause it may “stigmitise” new players but I know other MMOs do it with some degree of success. And I for one derive great pleasure in helping out newbies to the game (and I know I’m not the only one). So I’m sticking my vote out there for this to be a thing.

It should only be a “thing” if it’s completely optional. No one should be forced to label themselves as new if they don’t want to.

A better option would be for experienced players to create “training” groups in the group finder specifically for helping out new players.

  1. As Brahmina said, it must be optional, because being “new” at anything can carry a stigma

  2. Max level players need to be incentivized through some reward to help marked new players

I’m not against it, but I see a few downsides to this kind of system.

I’d rather see the mentor tag from GW2 be implemented than flag someone as new

I just say I’m new if I’m new to something, I can vary by context (aka someone can play very long time without ever raiding)

As much as I liked the idea of the ‘sprout’ thing in XIV…

With this community? No freaking way. I’ve never seen such pointless and unbridled anger outside of Call of Duty.

This is an excellent idea. People who are willing to help can tag themselves. I don’t play any game besides WoW, so I don’t know how it works in GW2. I assume mentors don’t have to be tagged as such all the time, only when they’re open to helping folks out.

Veteran players mark themselves with an icon that shows up on zone maps as an indicator they are willing to help or explain things as needed. It’s also used as a commander tag for meta events. Can be turned on and off whenever they want

I’d be happy with that. Allow me to tag myself as an experienced player willing to help newbies. Give us a reward system to incentivise more people to do it. Win win.

Nah it would make trolls and scammers alike target them easier.

I thought of this too. Tried doing it a couple times then gave up. All I ever got were people who wanted alts carried through stuff or people who just wanted to troll, plus a few people who spoke no English and signed up for the group because they couldn’t read it wasn’t a regular dungeon group. It was too annoying to be worth my time.

It’s been a long time since I’ve knowingly seen a genuinely new player, but I would love to take new players under my wing. There’s just no way to find them.

  1. say I’m new
  2. my brother “helps” me
  3. rewards and profit gained

Obviously if rewards were involved, Blizzard would have a way to prevent this. They do know how long you’ve been playing.

  1. buy new account
  2. say I’m new
  3. have my brother help me
  4. reap rewards and profit
  5. general forums: WTF BLIZZ PAY2WIN???

Yeah, whatever. Even if Blizzard did this, the rewards wouldn’t be worth buying a whole new account under a new name.

Final Fantasy does this
And it’s the worst thing they’ve implemented out of everything

People pay $30 for a faction change

Yeah… Blizzard knows how old your account is.

Please see my post above about buying a new account to pose as new for rewards

So Blizzard makes more money from you?

You sure played them!
