Is it just me or does anyone else feel like they need to do something to fix the name crisis. It feels like the only way to get a decent name is to face roll across the keyboard and hope for the best.
It’s because GMs refuse to unlock names on long dormant accounts. That used to be a thing a while back. Put in a ticket with a list of names and the GM would unlock the ones he/she could.
Not anymore. If you have a name on a dormant account it’s gone forever.
Personally I use the wow fantasy name generator site. Gives me an open perspective.
That’s not really true. Names on accounts that have been inactive for more than 2 expansions are automatically unlocked.
“Press X to Doubt”
I’ve never seen any names free up. Also 2 expansions is 4 years. That’s a ridiculously long time.
I wanted so much to create a dorf named Urist, but alas, such glorious name belongs to a dormant account on the server I want.
Yup. It’s ridiculous. If an account is inactive for a year you should be able to request a name to be freed up for use.
If I was inactive for a year I wouldn’t expect to keep all my names…those are for paying customers.
I agree it’s a really long time. But the fact that the system is in place is why they refuse to unlock names manually nowadays.
Actually… The process doesn’t appear to be automatic according to this post. It looks like a thing they manually do every expansion (of course that means we have no proof they actually did it at the start of BFA)
They have fixed it.
If someone is gone for two expansions, then their names are released to the public.
For example, someone who quit in MoP would have their name freed up now.
Always a bummer finding out a name I would like is taken by someone’s long-abandoned level 10 alt.
I really miss the old system but everything has to be automated now.
There are four names on Moon Guard that I’ve been trying to get for years. The names never log on so I suspect they’re on active accounts of people that left the server years ago but are holding onto the names just in case. I don’t blame them though. I’m doing the same thing on Area 52 just in case.
But! If I could talk to a GM I could find out a tiny bit more. They would never release the name of toons on someone’s account but they would have told me if they are, in fact, an active account.
I had a tauren named Grufnar. I just love that name for a tauren. I deleted a low lvl alt with that name to retore the original Grufnar that i deleted for some reason a couple years back. But when i loged into Grufnar it said that I couldnt use that name. RIP Grufnar.
THIS ! is an issue that needs to be addressed. They wanna fix stuff. Lets fix the name system. Lets add surnames to the game so We have more names to pull from. Pretty much infinite names
No surnames. Not all races use surnames. They need to let us be able to use one space, hyphen or apostrophe in our names.
Just use special characters. I use the a in my name not only because Swalsh was taken but because it looks like the Stargate symbol for Earth/home. You’re not above special characters that literally don’t even take an extra second to type.
Apostrophes is a big one, so many good names for many races that use it but it doesn’t look the same all put together.
I have lots of alts, scattered across multiple accounts, and I have never had any trouble coming up with good names. Get creative. Stop trying to steal names from other people.
But what if…they’re stealing the names from us?
If they have the name first it’s not yours
But what if…I thought of it first but wasn’t playing wow at the time?
