The Myth that is "Warrior" leveling

So I started out as a druid and learned that I would need to play some hybrid type of resto end game so I re rolled warrior.

I read a ton of guides and looked over a lot of opinions in the forums and watched as many videos from vanilla as I could. Here’s what I discovered after leveling my warrior.

In my opinion a majority of the people that wrote those guides and are giving opinions today are not aware what patch we are really in. This is the pre burning crusade patch. I believe all of the things said date back to earlier versions.

While leveling I had very little down time outside of a couple of situations I caused on myself with multiple mob aggros. You know those times you’re trying to get that last peasant kill in hillsbrad and pull 4 farmers :d It is pretty much mob to mob grinding with occasional bandaging. My killing speed is actually faster than the priest using optimal rotations on both.

Would love to hear experiences from other people. How is your warrior leveling going or what was your experience 1-60 like?

Pretty much before level 25 if you pull two mobs without a 30 minute cooldown or a potion available, it’s a roll of the dice that you’ll die without any ability to save yourself minus running away.

Edit: To be clear, higher level it gets a lot easier. But you also gotta target mobs your level or 1-2 levels below.

So far so good.

The difficulty of warrior leveling was/is greatly exaggerated because people weren’t speccing correctly.

It’s certainly not OP at it like some classes, but it’s far from difficult if you go arms. Once you get sweeping strikes pulling extra mobs on accident no longer becomes a threat.

I didn’t have any issues with 2 mobs from 1-30 at all. I did carry potions that I found and saved them for emergency situations.

I did not target anything below my level generally i was fighting equal level or higher because of how awful questing is laid out in classic. If they were 1 higher then I would body pull or use a bow for sure. 2 of those mobs and a couple of misses and I would have to hamstring and run.

Leveling isn’t as sluggish as people claim it to be. In my experience, having potions, bandages and food, I was able to constantly get experience while at the same time keeping my farming efficient.

If you are buffed all the time with food and bandages, leveling should be a breeze.

So far I’m pleasantly surprised. As you say, it’s really not difficult at all so long as you are fighting a sensible level range of mobs. I prefer green-level mobs and quests because it’s lightning-fast to blast through them, but even most yellow mobs aren’t giving me much trouble. A quick bandage every several pulls and that’s it for downtime.

I’m just trying to understand why “warrior” is in scare quotes in the title.

The most current guides are telling people you will have to sit and eat almost every pull or bandage which is turning people away from warriors. I have a couple of friends that refused to go warrior after reading all this.

I keep telling everyone that it is not correct info.

I have leveled several to 30 atm after I hit max. I am trying to cure my Altaholic disease.

Lock would be the easiest imo
Warrior is 2nd or 3rd to Hunter/priest.

I thought Mage would be higher than Warrior, as well as Pally/Shaman? Rogue would maybe be tougher?

Compared to other classes (lock, hunter, mage etc) warrior has lower sustain and is less able to survive a bad pull.

My first ever character back in Vanilla was a troll warrior. The memory of leveling him haunts me to this day.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not disagreeing with the OP. That was my ultra-noob days. In all likelihood I was doing it wrong.

Agreed honestly. People think it’s easier because the people are actually better at the game. Warrior is tough because it’s unforgiving if you make mistakes, not so much because it has inherent difficulty beating mobs in pve.

the thing that goes grossly underappreciated is that the reward function for writing content on the internet is not based on how correct it is; it’s based on how much traffic it gets. A lot of content is produced expressly to get traffic for the producer, and not to benefit you. A lot of content is out there to get you to click, not to get you to win.

This guy is my warrior alt. My main is a mage and the two classes are a world apart.

The mage died very rarely while leveling, maybe a total of three times (not counting PvP interactions), and could take on groups of 3+ mobs with ease, kill most elites no problem, and mobs who were up to 4 levels higher than me relatively safely.

This warrior has been fed the best possible leveling gear from my mage, as well as the strongest available level appropriate potions (+8 STR/AGI, Shadow Oil, etc). He’s pretty strong, capable of taking on 3+ mobs at once depending on level, but that’s the real crux of it. If it’s 3 mobs who are 2-3 levels lower than me, I’ll murder them pretty effectively. But even as decked out as I am mobs who are 3-4 levels higher are a major challenge to kill even solo. At level 29 so far and I’ve died probably around 10 times, mainly in areas where mob density is super high. If too many mobs pull there’s pretty much no chance to escape or live, and that’s the real reason leveling a warrior can be tough.

As a mage if it looked like I was going to die due to over pulling I pop nova and walk away. This guy gets dazed, mobbed, and dies.

He also doesn’t solo elites nearly as well as the mage. It takes popping Retalliation and chugging a potion bare mimumum usually.

Mages issues while leveling is you’re going to be drinking a lot whether you aoe grind or single pull. My exp with warrior was I rarely sit to eat as I kept first aid maxed.

I think people are having an easier time because they consumed guides and related content, thus making them better at playing warriors because their expectations are closer in line with reality. We have a bunch of people coached up on how “hard” warrior leveling is going to be, showing up with pots and bandages then going… “wait this isn’t that hard!”

Well no, because… you’re doing it right.

This is my first classic experience for disclosure.

It’s not AS BAD as I thought it would be based on the guides I read but I can also tell that I’m doing it slower than almost, if not every, class. First aid is a big help and finding a good weapon is too, it just comes down to the lack of sustain or defensive CDs. I hear stories in the guild from the hunters and mages about soloing stuff and I just get sadfaced.

The memory of leveling him haunts me to this day.

Man can I ever empathize with that. My first main in Dec. 2004 was a warrior. I clicked all my abilities, and keyboard turned with the ARROW KEYS.

He was dual wield arms, but had a really bizzare spec such that he couldn’t get Mortal Strike until 49 due to talents placed randomly in Fury and Prot.

I’ve downed every P1 boss in full feral bear spec. Screw your warrior; level that drood.
