The Mystery of C'thun and Yogg

Azeroth had four Old Gods.

C’thun, God of Chaos
Yogg-Saron, God of Death
N’zoth, God of the Deep (lawl)
Y’shaarj, God of Seven Heads

And all is fine and happy until you realize that Chaos and Death are their own Cosmic Bubbles, separated from the Void.

So why are these Void Creatures the Gods of things they shouldn’t be?

Maybe they were responsible to try to corrupt those cosmic forces. Remember: The 6 Cosmic Powers of Warcraft are locked in an eternal struggle for dominance. We know the Shadowlands have been in conflict with ALL the other cosmic forces, one way or another. Maybe it’s the same for the Void Lords. Maybe they want to beat not just the Light, but also Order, Chaos, Death and Life.

But in that case, where is the Old God of Life, or the Old God of Order?

Maybe I’m overthinking and the Old Gods are just edgy teens trying to sound cool.

They were supposed to be the final villains of WoW but got retconned twice, once for having masters aka “void lords” and a second time to being switched to “unkillable, put into a sleeping state” to “dead” in BFA.

the Unkillable thing was always headcanon that got out of control.

The first confirmation that C’thun was dead was actually around when we killed C’thun!

“Even in death you can feel the legacy of C’Thun’s evil around you.”

Then in 2016 we had a blog post about Villains that had an entry about C’thun.

“They invaded the city-kingdom of Ahn’Qiraj, fighting countless qiraji and silithid before finally confronting and killing the malevolent god

Finally, on Blizzcon 2018 the Devs themselves said this about both C’thun and Yogg:

“I would say that we should consider them dead . But! As with all things in World of Warcraft and in general in the Warcraft universe, death is not always final. Therefore, if there is the coming of the Old Gods, or some precursor of the Old Gods appear from the eternal darkness, from the Void, for example, if there is any way or opportunity to return them, I imagine that this may well happen.”

Don’t forget the Old God of Happiness! {◕ ◡ ◕}

But their titles are just cosmetic things, not literal ones. All Old Gods are Void creatures and on that cosmic side. They just give themselves titles to be more impressive.

Like chaos and death are basically what they all do anyways. The Twisting Nether and Shadowlands don’t exclusively own those traits. Many villains are chaotically trying to kill us.

There are none. Old Gods are strictly creatures of the Void. They are self-proclaimed gods of whatever.

I think chaos isn’t necessarily Fel in this case, so much as MADNESS, insanity, etc. C’thun is basically the Old god of lunacy and madness. Yogg-Saron can be explained as decay and entropy being a sub-aspect of the Void as entropy incarnate. The cosmic forces are separate, but they do bleed into each other a little. The dead things resurrected in The Emerald Nightmare for instance kind of acted like meat puppets more than they did really anything truly “risen” as a true undead like the Forsaken…being jerky and loose in their movements like the dinos risen my Umbric in Zuldazar…Yogg’s control of “Death” is likely a mixture of mind control capabilities most Old gods seem to share to some degree universally and a power specific to him/it over decay and entropic rot.

god of gross rotting taxidermy just doesn’t have the same ring to it…

Beware of Slee’zee Saron who resides under the Lion’s Pride Inn at Goldshire on the Moonguard server.

The Warcraft Universe is a bunch of cheap rip offs of every piece of fiction ever created, masterfully stitched together in a way that the end result is greater than the sum of it’s parts.

An appellation by Man is no more concrete of meaning than my assertion that I am the true Pope and the imposter sitting the throne is a psychic amalgam of the sordid sorcerers and black Set priests of grim-fabled long ruined Stygia, come to take vengeance upon the world that spurned them and their venomous god.

All the more when the beings in question are able to so deeply influence our fleshy minds to their own ends. They could have had us name them gods of underwater basket-weaving or Mongolian throat-singing if e’er it tickled their fancy to so do.

That’s the Sha of Happiness, not the Old God.

And it became an ascended meme. https://wow.gamepedia.com/Happiness_(companion)

I think they chose their own tittles.

Frankenstein game.

Oh Old gods no…not squid tittles!!!

looks up what a tittle is Okay that’s not so bad…

What is shall you have me do your holiness?

Bring me a shrubbery.
One that looks nice, and not too expensive.

There’s Death and chaos as fundamental forces, and death and chaos as concepts of life.

Both can exist, btoh are also different.

Although I just think the titles are no more than…titles.

You are right that the void in this story is trying to infiltrate or destroy all the other forces, and perhaps vice versa.
In the main story we see the Light attacking the Venthyr.

And other realms attacking the shadowlands.

This forum has a serious problem with passing headcanons around until it’s accepted as fact, even when the game itself contradicts them.

“Undead couldn’t possibly be Paladins, and undead Priests area all shadow”

Points to laundry list of undead holy priests and paladins

“Those don’t count”

It isn’t attacking the Venthyr anymore than a volcanic eruption is an attack on the people below.

There’s no force there malevolently oppressing the Venthyr. There just happens to be an area where the light is strong, and the Venthyr happen to be vulnerable to light.
