The most optimal way to play the game, is to not play it until later after they add the obvious QOL additions that should be in each xpac from the start.

There may be a lot of catch up. But there are critical bottlenecks that are intended to keep latecomers from catching up. There were constant complaints in late BfA about the essence grind, which was still gamebreaking for new and returning players after the vendor became available.
