The Most Offensive Character In WoW;

Is Twilight Sky Commander Richtofen.

And I’m kinda serious.

Seriously what the hell was with the bewildering WW1 era anti German sentiment coming from Blizzard-Activision in the late 00s to early 2010s? Because seriously somebody also decided the loudly psychotic N@ZI Scientist from CoD zombies should also be named Richtofen.

And if you don’t know, Manfred Von Richtofen was a by all accounts honorable German airman in The Great War, best known these days for fighting Snoopy and having surprisingly good frozen pizza.

Yeah this guy;

They even gave him a red striped cap reminiscent of the actual German uniforms of that era. And again this was WW1. So. Not sure where this energy is coming from. Germany wasn’t crazier than anyone else in that one.

And by all accounts the guy was a total honorable fighter. Deliberately tried to disable and not kill Allied airmen when feasible. Is still widely regarded as a war hero in modern Germany as I understand it and they’re uh. Pretty adverse to that sort of thing as I understand it.

Seriously like there’s all these arguments about the story’s mishandling sensitive topics and misappropriating cultures. Which 100% I think are valid topics.

But it remains strange to me how like nobody brings up how they slandered a, ya know, actual human being. A person who lived and laughed and had hopes and dreams and did some extraordinarily impressive ish with his time here.

Sure the man had faults but making him a sky kitten torturer seems a bit much. And I wouldn’t harp if this was like a war criminals namesake but again from everything I’ve read of the guy he seemed like a good man for his time.

Idk. Like this is a very minor thing but if players want to talk about problematic parts of the story should we ignore how they outright slandered the legacy of an honest to God war hero that even the enemy respected?

I say we bring the guy back as a Forsaken and let him be some awesome bat rider. Could give him that cool armored red bat mount. Have him portrayed as a deadly but honorable ace.

Idk. Better than having him be just a small animal torturerer. Again - actual real human person. Not an abstract like a culture or a subject matter. A person. Who genuinely existed. Who was widely regarded as pretty cool. Didn’t torture any kittens that we know of.

I get (to an extent) what you are saying, but I just doublechecked this character, and feel that you are really blowing this out of proportion.

This isn’t the first character loosely based off of a real person. Hemet Nessingwary is loosely based off of Ernest Hemingway and Makael Bay is a Goblin who sends you to get explosives in the Wander Isle.

It’s just a character they whipped up in Cata for a quest that is very loosely inspired by the Red Baron.

I very much doubt that this is the most offensive character in WoW, in fact, I feel like if you looked hard enough, it wouldn’t even scrape top 10 most offensive in terms of how many people would actually be bothered by it.

Idk kinda rubs me the wrong way. A shocking number of people still associate the name Richtofen with an evil N@ZI mad scientist. And having the guy be a kitten torturer here hardly seems helpful.

Again this was an actual human being. The reasoning for this frankly monstrous posthumous character assassination is just bewildering to me.

Seriously is one of Roy Brown’s, THAT HACK FRAUD, descendants working at Activision? Because cats outta the bag Roy everyone knows a lucky Australian infantryman managed to down Richtofen- not you.

Tell 'em Manny’s still got shooters out here.

Slandering a culture does in fact slander actual human beings. More than one of them.

it’s the N**i part that they’re adverse to and that was in the Second War To End All Wars.

They’re vastly outnumbered by those who associate him as Snoopy’s arch nemesis.

Wild to me we just had a kid’s show that casually implied an Allied Airman reincarnated as a beagle and was still having PTSD flashbacks.

But that’s Richtofen for you. Much can be made of someone with patience and training but truly the one thing you cannot earn, teach or buy in this world is talent and the Red Baron had it in spades.

Drops you so bad you’re still mad about it in the next life.

Culture is constantly flowing and constantly changing because it is not history. It is human expression incarnate. And the only eternal tradition is that everything can and indeed must change. Such is the very nature of life itself.

But a human life is a very brief and static thing. A very material thing that should not be trifled with.

In older, more civilized times people knew not to defile graveyards or speak ill of the dead. And in a way we do too.

Why do you think you fear the dark?

Please think before you speak to someone who actually studies cultures and history. No one is impressed with your retweets.

Lmao, switched alts to avoid taking me off ignore.

If say I don’t hate Black people, but I hate everything about black culture, that’s raciat af. I’m insulting Black people. Simple as that. Our culture is part of who are. Their traditions, as well as everyone’s changes over time, but that doesn’t change the fact that I can’t insult an entire culture without insulting the people. There’s a history of cultures being demonized in order to demonize their people.

Guarantee I know more about Middle Eastern history, modern and ancient, than you. Even my 15 year old brother does. We love history.

Belgrom Rockmaul

I am not here because of honor, <name>. I am here because of one orc's pride.

If I had not rejected Belgrom's offers, then I'm sure I'd still be in Orgrimmar taking care of real business.

His desire for women is not unknown to many of the female warriors in Durotar, but that doesn't stop him from being his charming self.

He's lucky he didn't pursue his desire for me much longer though--he'd be short more than just the digits on his hands.

HAHA! Look at you now, pathetic woman! I spit on your remains!

Thank you, . Thank you from the bottom of my heart! This is indeed a great day!

I would give you a kingdom if it were in my power! But perhaps you will settle for this.

Haha! Stupid blood elf, look at you now… in a burlap sack and missing your body! You should never have betrayed Belgrom!

“What’s worse, I trusted a woman!”

I can see where you’re coming from somewhat. On that note, maybe some French WoW players (for the record, I’m not French) feel the same way about how Yrel was treated in BfA given her Joan of Arc references.

So that’s why Elliot Rodgers liked the Horde! Black comedy aside, I wonder if this character was a product of the Cosby suite crew or someone who knew about them trying to warn others.

And again.

I would like someone to explain to me how that’s worse than slandering the legacy of an actual human person.

Seriously how is this still relevant?

Anyway I’m terribly sorry about that loan thing but if at this point you expect more from the Dems then I’m afraid you’re beyond my help.

But I do always tip in cash for my doordashers so they don’t have to report it to the IRS.
