Also the funny thing is ordering by popularity gives you
Warlords: about the old horde which 2/3 of the horde has either no ties to or gave a crushing defeat to, not really about the modern faction conflict except in the delusions of the Garrosh crowd, and then everyone hated the expansion, on the tail of an expansion that was a middling success and got a lot of people who pretend they’ve played all the games in the series whining about a race first introduced in WC3, and most importantly an expansion that ended with the factions at peace, only an idiot would have assumed Warlords would be about faction war
BFA: Yep, faction war, and then everyone hated it too, on the tail of one of the most popular expansions of all time
Cata: About the rise of Deathwing, faction war is literally not a thing in that trailer
Wrath: Broad strokes summary of Arthas’s story, nothing about the factions
Mists: the second one on this list that’s actually about faction war, had a bunch of people who never played WC3 crying about a movie that came out about 15 years after Sam Didier designed Chen Stormstout
Shadowlands, one of the most hated expansions of all time, trailer isn’t about faction war but about what happens when a Frost DK tries to solo a MM hunter in PVP
Burning Crusade, introduces the two new races, gives a preview of the overall villain, virtually nothing about faction war
War Within, about war preparations, no faction war, had the war in warcraft people in tears because it used “Show don’t tell” to give hints of the coming conflict, notably is part of the post SL recovery
Vanilla, the third one on this list that’s actually about faction conflict, heavily advertising the PVP angle of the game
Dragonflight, about post-war renewal while giving a hint of the second dragon war to come, notably it came right after the single most hated expansion of all time
U know Wow Classic has a lot of WAR in it, not only Ally vs Horde, but internal wars, political tensions, factions and a complex and interesting writing.
In Legion was awesome Ally and Horde teaming up to battle the Demons, but still mantaining the tension between them.
When Battle for Azeroth started, a lot of people were hyped, however in the end was so bad not because the War, but for the writing, iconic characters ruined, hollow storytelling, lots of nonsense.
If you know that you have to fight a bandit horde tomorrow, and you know you need your neighbor’s help to defeat it, would you fight your neighbor today?
No, you’d make peace so you’re both fresh and ready.
True, but you can deduce from the trailers that those with action, conflict, and strong emotional stakes tend to get more engagement (BFA, WoD) than those where nothing happens (DF, TWW). The TWW-Trailer is dull and about war just on paper. You see a stone dwarf lifting, a trollgirl dancing, and Faerin getting some gear. no climax
‘The masses crave for action in Warcraft’ would’ve been a better title.
War can get you action, but peacecraft never will.
Uh huh. WoD was not a faction war expansion, for the like hundredth time in this thread that this apparently needs to be reminded.
Also the intro sequence to TWW has more action than the start of most of the expansions and yet here we are with the lot of you whining about peacecraft not bringing action (like if there’s a thing TWW isn’t really lacking it’s big action setpieces seeing how every zone transition/questline ending has one).
I meant this in general, not in reference to the faction war. In comparison to previous content, PvE lore is also becoming softer imo. There is no tension curve and Xal’atath is a huge letdown. I also compared the Stromgarde final duel to that of Zuldazar. Big difference in tone.
Alright, where’s the action in your opinion?
timestamps are appreciated. I’m not going to tear it down afterwards or something; I’m just interested.
It may be subjective, but I don’t see any significant action to root for there.
But even if it would be true, it doesn’t change the fact that the peacecraft scenes are getting way too much screentime for a lot of people since DF.
Do you even know what a straw man is in the first place? I am going to assume no barring some truly exceptional evidence seeing how you’re the one who is whining about peacecraft lacking action, explicitly, in your own words.
If you think the Dalaran intro or the start of the expedition to Azj Kahet aren’t action setpieces this is entirely a you problem, it’s not bliz’s fault that you have no idea what you’re even whining about.
They will never do it again. The WoW team hates WoW. The current player base also hates WoW. Identity is ruined and gone forever. Handouts are happening on a daily basis now. Sad to see.
The WoW team literally dug into old wow lore that had been set by the wayside for more faction war garbage in DF, they absolutely love the setting in ways the war in warcraft crowd simply does not.
I too love to do some heavy lifting in the morning.
Classic launch is basically the only reason the SL trailer doesn’t have worse numbers. BFA bled people hard before the first patch was even out and SL may have dipped as low as Warlords’ lowest point.
War-in-warcraft whining is literally only about the faction war, otherwise no one would be whining ever since even supposedly cutsey, friendly DF has you in several conflicts. Oh’naran’s dungeon is one of the better war-themed dungeons in the game (you may not think it’s fun but it still depicts a form of warfare better than most BFA stuff, although admittedly nothing will come close to FFXIV’s Ghimlyt on that front)
Where’s the example though of peace loving people, adoring the setting more than the faction conflict enjoyers?
Nokhud Offensive? Sure, fun dungeon but hardly a war.
Sorry but there’s no ‘supposedly’ about it, DF - while elements of it were fun, was definitely, undeniably World of Friendscraft.
Even had a Dom Torreto level “family” moment delivered with extra cringe.
I’d take a real faction war with in-house political intrigue, decent plots or even all out war between a battle hungry mountain king dwarf who took over the alliance and a grimtotem tauren led horde over this Red Dawn / Faerin god-awful cringe.
Actual faction war is fun, and could be exceptional if delivered correctly. BFA was terrible and an example of how not to do faction war.
I’m saying the writers who dug up Knaak’s dragon lore probably care more about the setting than people whose primary contribution to the whole is eternally retreading WC1
Actual faction war is fun, and could be exceptional if delivered correctly. BFA was terrible and an example of how not to do faction war.
There will never be “proper” faction war because all “proper” faction war means is an endlessly mobile series of goalposts.
