The Magic of Vanilla and why we say it was harder

My story of last night playing Classic with my Son

Last night I went to do and Elite quest in Pyre Village with my son, it’s his first time really playing the game. The mobs were lvl 15ish my son and I were lvl 16. They were hard, but if we played right we could kill them. My son is new, he messed up a lot, didn’t play his class right, and he died a lot. Because he didn’t want to die he learned to do better improving his gameplay and actually started to look like he knew something.

That would never have happened if it wasn’t hard. I myself died a few times, mainly trying to help my son, but also because I ran out of mana. So guess what? I played better because I had to.

Then another group seeing we were decent at handling the mobs asked us to join their group. We accepted, and because they were so kind in asking us to join their group, once we finished getting our shackles I told my son “They helped us so we should stay and help them get all of theirs”. Teaching my son to not be a toxic jerk is part of being a parent.

Due to staying and helping them get all their shackles the group asked if we wanted to do “A Husbands Revenge”, we said yes, it was close to where we were. So we all went over and the quest was orange to us all. We pulled our target and 2/3 of the group died when people standing to close to the Sickly citizens and they agro’d. We all ran back, rezzed, but the quest was done.

So, being able to do an orange quest decided to do a Red quest. Not everyone had the quest but decided to stick it out because the exp was better than it was alone. So we ran over to Beren’s Peril, it was like we just walked into a mythic 10 with garbage gear. All 5 of us died at least twice, but I don’t think I’ve had that much fun playing this game in the last 2 years. It was crazy in that cave but we got it done. 4 out of the 5 took rez sickness just so they didn’t have to go back in and try to get out alive.

So, in the end, I had to something I haven’t done in almost a decade. I was forced to group to get my quest done, and it was the most fun I’ve had playing this game in years. I met new people and we had a great time. I never would have had to group in retail, mobs 4-5 levels higher than me never would have killed me. Yet in Classic 2 lvl 20’s and 1 lvl 21 mob killed our whole grp, and it was fantastic. Because you are forced to group this is what ties the community and guilds together, If I see them guys again I will not have second thoughts about grouping with them, they were all really fun to play with.

Now my son and I have a crazy story to remember together of the time we played Wow, grp up with people we never met before, walked into Beren’s Peril, took on really hard mobs and all got killed, but we still got the quest done before we all died, and it was crazy fun.

Yep, grouping is a must when questing in Classic, well when it comes to elite quests. Unless you know your class and go slow, then you can pull a lot of them off solo…well if you are playing the right class.

Well, it’s just getting old seeing these people slam on Vanilla players about APES downing Rag, while ignoring the fact that they have died 50 times and was forced to group up to get quest only a few levels higher done or else constantly be wearing garbage gear 5 levels lower than they are.

Vanilla forced community because you had to group, normal mobs would kill you during the leveling process, and it was long. By the time you reached 60, you had friends that you liked playing with.

I was just doing this quest last night. I didn’t realize how lit silverpine forest was back in the day. When I was leveling my undead characters I always shifted them towards the barrens. I am glad I am sticking with these quests as it will help with undercity rep by the time I am 60. Stories like yours is what made vanilla one of the best WoW experiences. Glad you had fun!
