The Lore Feels So Cheesy Now

Half the reason I’ve been playing for almost 19 years is the cheese.

World of Therapycraft: Honestcon. Worth a YouTube watch

So did Alex Afrasiabi have premonition or something? I don’t get it.

The Vanillia Classic MMO inherited its story from an earlier game,
That game was a video Dungeons & Dragons,
D&D was inspired by Tolkien and
Tolkien was trying to create his own epic like Homer’s Odyssey.

After Legion they stopped caring what players might think about the lore. They don’t value it themselves. “Phoning it in” was apparently good enough for those people.

Some have said he had it in for the Sylvanas character. A vision of the tree burning he experienced while under the influence got him started investing resources into making that happen, without any concern about how that would fit in the story. He would have assigned that to someone else. It would have required a major delay to rewrite it from the bottom up, so instead they just decided to go with it.

Fantasy lore has always been cheesy. The secret is to find that flavour of cheese that’s right for you.

Cheesy but at the very least entertaining overall. As long as I’m entertained, I don’t really care. I can’t say I was very entertained during SL though. Danuser should feel bad for what he did.

He took a fine Gouda and turned it into Limburger.

I am pretty sure they never started caring.

I just ran ICC again for old times sake yesterday and watched the cutscene where Terenas talks to Arthas after the battle, then Bolvar proceeds to wear the crown from Tirion. Compare that to the cutscenes we see in Dragonflight… it’s like comparing the real stuff to cheap, off-brand stuff. The story feels so hollow and bland, where as in the past it contained passion and seasoning. The stories went from having an epic feel to them, to feeling more like a a child-like Disney movie. This is coming from a person who enjoys having a little cheese thrown in the mix, too.

I guess we will just have to see what happens in the world soul saga. When Metzen spoke on stage, I did feel a nostalgic hype that I hadn’t felt since the Legion era. Maybe there is something epic in store for us.

If Metzen is involved I do have something resembling faith. I’m just keeping my expectations tempered. I’ve been under the impression that they begged him to come back.

WoW has basically always been a Saturday morning cartoon in terms of story.

I think most of BFA was/is great.

After that it was awful. Including current expac.

The story has always been cheesy. The fact that the developers can’t adhere to the foundation and the pillars of world building has been a real shame.

Lore was never good. It was a crazy mixed bag of plagiarism of multiple types of media. WIth that said, the best storytelling they had by far was MoP. They kept it true from start to finish with how the stuff in Pandaria developed. But then, WoW movie was made, they wanted to make a double event with movie + game and we got WoD. That’s when everything went out of the window and any type of sense or reasoning that our characters had for going anywhere just became script armor and terrible terrible retcons.

Legion’s ending wasn’t great either. They pulled out their biggest bad in the franchise only to be like “oh well he in jail now lol”

MoP started strong but ended weak unfortunately

Says the guy named after a Harry Potter character. :dracthyr_crylaugh: I mean come on, you could at least have switched to an elf hunter named Legolass or something.

Lore has always been cheesy though…

Like, wut?

I don’t keep up with Blizzard staff, what specifically do you mean here?

All I know is that Blizzard had an entire expansion about Dragons and they somehow made them boring. They made Dragons boring…that is a new level of bad.
