The lesson from Obsidian Citadel isn't what you think

The lesson from Obsidian Citadel isn’t “exploit early, exploit often”, it’s what I’ve been preaching about for more than a year now:

Blizzard HAS to put a stop to 2x4 groups.

Keep in mind-- there WAS NOT a problem with this area, in and of itself. The mobs weren’t a problem. The drop rates weren’t a problem. The rep wasn’t a problem. NOTHING was wrong.

UNTIL people were hyper-spawning mobs … that shouldn’t have hyper-spawned in the first place.

Hyper-spawning is a way to keep QUESTS moving along.

So if mobs are hyper-spawning, they should ONLY drop quest items. No gold. No rep items. NOTHING else but the “collect 8 things and move along” so that you can collect your 8 things and move along.

This has gone on for FAR too long. And it’s not just the negative impact from this ONE zone. It’s how it affects the whole game.

I can’t even find a group in the group finder to do content because 90%+ of the group are just 2x4 groups, trying to exploit the latest area.

THIS HAS TO STOP.

Yes and no.

I think they should have a normal loot table if you are on the quest that involves killing them.

Otherwise, yeah, no loot for u.

I get what you’re saying-- but you can’t do that because people just won’t turn the quest in.

Although I did say-- quest items SHOULD drop. That’s the point. Did one of us read wrong? lol

Or just not make a spam rep grind in the first place

Yeah, I get it. I’m just saying hyperspawned quest mobs, particularly at the beginning of an expansion like this while everyone is still questing, should have an ordinary loot table that can drop vendor greys, greens, etc in addition to the normal quest drops.

As far as people never turning the quest in, well, they could always have done that? Seems to me, over the years, weak mobs on particular quests that were streaming at you never had loot tables to begin with. They could also just adjust it such that, once your “8 boar tusks” had dropped, subsequent kills never have loot.

I tend to agree.

This is what happens when they don’t timegate things.

But that’s only as it pertains to thing that eventually give a reward. In this case, rep.

But 2x4 groups exist for more than that. In fact, the MAJORITY of 2x4 groups are just for farming mats. Not with the intent of turning them in for rep or anything like that… but just for the mats. I would assume in most cases to sell, but I’m sure there are people just farming mats, because they need mats.

But that ruins the economy of the game. I’m not sure if you watched the price of cloth since release … but there’s all the proof you need. To say nothing of the meteoric descent of every other material. I’m not saying the NORMAL decline in pricing as an expansion goes on. I’m saying the price of cloth is where it would have been 4-6 months from now, if not for 2x4 groups.

There is no defending 2x4 groups. It is an abuse of in-game mechanics, and that is clearly defined as a violation of the ToS. It’s just up to Blizzard now to take a stand against degenerate gameplay and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

That’s been the lesson with Blizzard for years

After finally getting Wrathion to True Friend and unlocking the black scales for my dragons I can honestly say.

I have zero idea how Obsidian Citadel (and for that matter, Cobalt Assembly) is going to survive as doable content once the mass swarm of players is gone. Maybe it’ll be fine, but to raise the renown you need like 8400 rep, per rank, but the weeklies only gives like what? 1000 or so?

I feel like this rep was designed to be farmed, but if there isn’t anyone to farm it then…what happens?

nah, it gives A LOT more than that. I think it’s like 2000, but there are like 4-5 of them. It’s basically a level per week.

The only issue with it is that, if it’s designed to be completed in 6 weeks… the gear-rewards from it are going to be mostly irrelevant in 3 weeks.

You can call THAT part of the design out all you want. It truly is flawed.

But the weekly quests give a fair amount of rep. On top of the fact, once you’re doing those quests, you’ll get other rep rewards in the process. So quests ALONE might take 6 weeks, but you’ll organically get more rep with it, it’ll probably take 4 weeks without farming one extra minute.

Four weeks, probably 20mins a pop. That’s not asking a lot for an i390 neck and an i400 cape.

Interesting. Will check once the reset hits and try and see how far it can be done with Sabel. I panic grinded it over the weekend because, as mentioned, my main goal was just the dragon scales so if the content died out I’d be up a creek.

I was WONDERING why I could not get into a goddang key farm group for my Sabellian rep grind…sigh. FUUUUUUUUUU-

It’s not suppose to, once it becomes old content it needs to be ignored.

Which becomes a bit of a pisser when said content comes with longer lasting transmog stuff lol.

The big fear for me was that said ignored content being ignored content 3 weeks into the expansion lol which was why I spent 10 hours over the weekend grinding it out.

I’m actually surprised more posts aren’t about 2x4 groups, I didn’t really care about the ads in gfinder but yeah in custom group finder it’s 90% 2x4

It’s like the frog in the kettle. No one cares about it, because they don’t see the IMMEDIATE effects.

I largely ignored it in BfA because I knew I’d never get anyone to care about the OVERALL economic impact of it. People have become complacent to TSM, let alone 2x4 groups.

But in SL, it became a MUCH more tangible problem because it was UTTERLY clogging up the group finder. Once all the Korthia skinning groups were gone with DF, I was hoping to finally be able to use the group finder again for it’s INTENDED purpose.

But nope. Just after release, 90% of the groups are just “2x4 for elementals”, “cloth farm, need Monk”, etc.

This has to stop. And I can only hope bringing more attention to it will cause more people to stand up to it. Don’t just wait around like the frog.

How?

It would be helpful if you defined a 2x4 group because I can guess but the entire issue may be different if I am incorrect.
