I watched the Last Blockbuster on Netflix the other night and it sure brought back memories. I remember my parents taking the family to movie rental stores a few times a month and getting to pick out SNES (later Playstation) games and a bunch of cheesy 90s movies. We’d have family movie night and it was a lot of fun. I remember going there with friends and spending an hour picking out movies when I was older.
Just a shame they were a product of their times. Kids these days won’t know the experience of going to the movie theater because you can pull up everything on digital streaming services now.

Yeah I have no clue how many times we rented Star Wars a new hope lol. Games weren’t able rented when I was a kid, Nintendo wasn’t a thing for us (I was playing Atari 2600 at the time).
Kids don’t even know what a CD is now, let alone a cassette, record, game cartridge, or vhs tape.
Yep, Friday evenings as a kid in the 90s was going to the local 7/11 with my dad and picking out 1-2 movies for myself and 1-2 movies for my parents, usually along with a corndog and a slushee. Once every in a while we might “splurge” and go to a different rental place a little further away that had a wider selection of tapes (7/11 only had recent releases).
It was something pretty special, particularly because growing up we only had two TV channels that came in over the roof antenna (ABC and PBS). Didn’t have any consoles and even though we got a computer in 1996, my mom usually kept that tied up. Entertainment was worth its weight in gold.
Now I can stare at the home screen on Netflix for half an hour and not be able to choose anything.

You know you can still have family movie night, right? Me and my kids have been doing it with the Mandolorian, Wandavision, and now Falcon and Winter Soldier. Only difference is i dont have to put on shoes, get the kids dressed, drive through the snow, and be overcharged for a rental thats only 1 day late.
