Memories can certainly be burdens, but they are also a core part of who you are. Several quests in the intro demonstrate the process of purging negative emotions, and the bells are seen to have a tranquilizing effect on their feelings. As for being forced, when the Kyrian become to emotional or begin doubting and whatnot, they are carted off to be reconditioned in the hall of whatever.
The Kyrians were the explicit subject of the thread.
It seemed to me that the implication was she was only there for a metaphorical handwave rather than actually being present. She appears and then immediately disappears again because sheâs supposedly so busy trying to prevent the Heart of the Forest from dying. There are certainly some inconsistencies there, as if you join the Night Fae she somehow has time to watch a play, but I was keeping the majority of my comments on the Kyrian because they are the topic of discussion.
They donât force it upon you in the sense that they strap you to a chair and wipe your memory.
It is a long process that allows people to come to terms with their new way of life. The temple of loyalty was originally designed for that purpose. Those that fail the trials for whatever reason are given a âsafe spaceâ in the Temple of Loyalty. That was until its Paragon (Devos) used it as a way to gain recruits for her attempted revolution.
Some of the dialogue options you are given to the doubtful aspirants during those quests are examples of positive reinforcement. Now surely a cult would never allow you to use positive reinforcement on its new members. Cults are infamous for using negative reinforcement and / or punishment to subjugate its members. They pull you down while also making you believe that the only way to survive is through them. If you show any signs of âweaknessâ you are punished.
For a fictional example, just look at what Horde Prime does to Hordak (and to the other clones) during season 5 of the She-ra reboot on Netflix. Only Horde Prime is allowed a name, only Horde Prime is worthy of emotions. Only Horde Prime can be a leader⌠a ruler. If a clone shows any of these, they are viewed as corrupted, as abominations and have to be âreconditionedâ by being purged of these âimperfectionsâ through a painful process.
Bastion / Kyrian story was boring to me. But the abilities for Prot warrior are amazing. Unfortunately I feel like Iâm giving up too much if I donât pick them. Venthyr interested me more story / cosmetic wise, but the abilities while they looked awesome, didnât really add much to my character. Iâm not a min / maxer but I still want abilities to feel useful.
That whole slave thing and memories eraser can f right off imo. Never liked it with orc peons either, bashing them or poisoning the hard working slaves in bc dailies. I know itâs a game, but it still didnât sit right. I mean if Iâm gonna do evil stuff, at least make it over the tope outlandish and humorous like locks and demons. Kyrians feel too close to home, so to speak. Needs to have that separation in. That clear line.
I think theyâre disliked for a few reasons. 1. Theyâre boring. and 2. Theyâre a cult. Kind of feels bad in retrospect, that the trans community were excited about the Kyrian. But thatâs a conversation for another day I guess.
Itâs because the Kyrians (like Nathanos) actually behave more like non fictional characters and people come to play games to get away from that. People also donât like cults (despite the billion other cults in wow that no one has a problem with).
Itâs just they represent some stuff that hits too close to home for some.
I personally love the Kylians exactly for these reasons. They are believable. And I love the history and culture of cults and hyper religion. But thatâs just me.
Some of those aspirants donât seem particularly pleased about the prospect of being brought to the Temple of Loyalty, but aside from that Iâm not sure if someone in this position would really feel like a choice is being presented to them. What other options do they have? What happens to someone who is selected to be a Kyrian that doesnât want to be a Kyrian? There certainly seems to be a number of people who arenât happy with the way things are operating, and it looks like Blizzard might also be taking a âwhat is justice, and can there be a universal moral judgement?â angle. Maybe thatâs part of the overarching plot around what seems to be a robotic sorting process for something as complex as a personâs life.
This just isnât true. Cults will use a mixture of whatever tactics they believe necessary to achieve their ends because they are fundamentally about control. Punishment or reinforcement is only a matter of what is more effective at the time. They will often play on the desire to belong or feel superior, make you feel special and loved, and then turn that reinforcement into a hook. Thatâs when the punishment comes in to play, as your entire social sphere will disappear if you try to leave.
Maybe the Kyrians are too on the nose about their cult like behavior. Removal of identity, corporal punishment, blind faith, all that good stuff. The modern parallels are at least interesting, and self reflection usually upsets people.
Itâs not a religion in the traditional sense that the writers would be criticizing.
Iâm a tank. Does that big guy scare me? Yes. Will I run in and make it angry so it tries to kill me instead of my team? Also yes. My feelings have no say in the matter. I have a job to do⌠I may have taken the zone/story wrong, but I saw it in a more military light.
Beyond that; Kindred rocks, phial is awesome, plus my little buddy is cute.
I was completely on board with Kyrians at one point. I even love Bastion. Itâs a nice zone. ButâŚI couldnât really get past the cult vibes.
Necrolords was probably my biggest surprise of the expansion so far. I like them a lot more than I thought I would. And the ability is pretty satisfying. I also think that Maldraxxus is a neat looking zone all around.
Either way I still have to quest through Revendreth, then I will know for sure what I want my hunter to align himself with.
Specifically, best or very good for many specs/classes.
But if more than enough players choose one covenant, the devs will nerf it or buff the others. Wondering where they set the thresholds to trigger nerfs/buffs.
Actually cults love bomb the hell out of new members, then slowly cut their ties to their support and family. The negative stuff usually only starts when you are fully reliant on the cult for basics, like housing, money etc. They often send their prettiest and most gentle looking in search for new members.
this comment seemed a little âedgyâ. Like your trying really hard to write something deep and use an analogy that has no real reference / meaning to what the post is about.
