The King's Avatar on Netflix

Had anyone else watched this? Some of you know I was an extra in seasons 5 and 6 of The Guild so I got super elated to find another MMO based show. In addition to the relationships and dynamics between players, there is actual in game action heavily represented here.

It is a c-drama about a group of gamers participating in an e-sports MMORPG. Coming from WoW it was a smooth transition to understand what was happening whether it was them grouping for dungeons and raids, dueling, arenas, etc. Highly recommend especially if you like WoW and looking for something on Netflix.

You have to watch it! I finished all the episodes in a couple days. The series is unique in a sense that you get to experience parts of show from the player’s toons in a game perspective when they are competing.

It totally gave me old school WoW vibes community wise after thinking about The King’s Avatar so much. I admire the camaraderie between the teammates. You can tell they not only for themselves but first the foremost they play for each other. They all want it. I wish I had guildies like that.

I loved the animated version of it. Very interesting and funny show. Haven’t seen the live action version though. I’m typically not a fan of live action shows that were originally animated. WoW definitely needs to get on the animated series thing. LoL is doing it. Ff14 has released its manga, which may turn into a animated series. I can see other very popular games getting animated.

I loved The Guild because it was hilarious.

How’s the comedy factor?

I’ve seen a lot of high quality shows from Asia lately(mostly thanks to netflix or I wouldn’t even have known about them).

I haven’t seen the anime but here are the opening and closing credits above and below for the live action adaptation after each episode for those curious. Each member of the cast and their rival team’s members mains one of the 25 classes that are highlighted in these vids. You’ll get familiar with the them and their abilities because they are repeatedly shown throughout the series.

Unspecialized - jack of all trades since it has the abilities from each class but at a lower proficiency

Battle Mage - has spells that directly enhance melee combat, can summon fire dragons to throw as a projectile from afar

Launcher - long range artillery, can switch to dual pistols up close

Ghostblade - support that has spells like freezing enemies a la Sub Zero

Warlock - ranged spell caster, can imprison enemies, channel purple rain from the sky, summon a death gate

Witch - ranged that fights hovering on a saucer in the air, mostly harasses with debuffs

Cleric - basic healer

Summoner - can summon beasts

Brawler - Wolverine like class equipped with claws and throws bricks lawl

Ninja - the rogue of the game they play, can vanish and sneak attack

Knight - melee with high HP and defense

Sharpshooter - long ranged sniper

Mechanic - fights using gadgets, missiles, and bombs and can also fly

Striker - melee that reminds me of Vi from LoL

Qi Master - sword wielding melee

What’s missing from WoW from my experiences these days is having guildies and teammates like these. I reflect on my WoW days from way back after watching this show and I could relate just being around people so passionate about the game and each other. If somehow the past magic into the game and it’s players could be rekindled again. :star_struck:

I honestly haven’t seen the WoW movie yet but maybe something else would be in the works due to the success of Arcane? I enjoyed Arcane too being somewhat familiar with LoL’s story but personally I liked the The King’s Avatar just as much due to it exploring the human element with players coming from diverse backgrounds being able to function as a single unit to achieve a common goal. This is something we all do in WoW. It’s a familiar theme how the “parts become the whole.”

The King’s Avatar is classified as a drama but there are comedic portions directly and indirectly in the show. Some topics in GD are identified by WoW players in certain episodes such as gold selling which would bring out a laugh if you watch it. Another that I thought was funny yet ridiculous was one scene where several guilds all planned a scheduled raid just to gank one guy.

I think the most powerful thing the series does is that it elicits your emotions being able to draw a parallel to the cast as MMORPG gamers ourselves. Also being able to invest in their backstories we may have gone through such as carrying on the legacy of someone you once knew, maintaining friendships being on opposite sides, chasing your dreams despite ones close to you telling you otherwise, and so on. My favorite struggle depicted throughout was best summed from a quote by Rocky Balboa in Rocky VI about “there’s something left in the basket” which is a desire to return to glory even after you grow older in age.

I want to compare and contrast how the live action is with the anime!

For sure! I was just browsing Netflix and I came across this about players in an MMO competing in e-sports. I was like SOLD! :raised_hands:

Is that the one where the MC has like 1000 apm on the keyboard? If so it was pretty hilarious. Feel like that came out years ago though

The first thought that came to my mind was that there is no GCD in their MMORPG, Glory. It was noted that having low APM was a deficiency for one of the players here. You would believe they were playing Starcraft seeing them go cray, cray on the keyboard.

Hmm. I never heard of it before. Might check it out but not really interested in esports.

I have. GREAT anime, made for gamers by gamers who understand the gamer world. 10/10 anime. There’s also no cheesy romance like in every other media…its just about what you get told in the first episode(won’t spoil).
