The key difference between Classic and Retail

There have been a lot of people talking about this, but I hope you allow one more person’s thoughts about Classic vs. Retail.

Classic has many differences between retail, some bad - simple rotation, game-breaking buffs, wildly imbalanced classes at the high end - but I wanted to talk about the one thing that Classic does right, and I mean really right:

In classic, you have a full game with some extra max-level content. The whole game feels integrated, all the way from level 1 to level 60. You can grind for rep, build profession skill, even get some high end gear before you even hit max level. There are a number of challenges you can face if you want, all of which are rewarded appropriately for the risk.

In retail, you have level 120… and you have the time-sink before you get there. The entire game prior to max level has no impact upon your play at 120. Moreover, there is only one real difficulty level below 120: super-easy.

Can retail please get a leveling experience that is more than just a day-long trudge to 120?

The key difference is that there’s a slim hope retail might improve in the future. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, in the morning retail will be sober, but Classic will still be ugly.

Take that back.

It’s not my fault you chose to be a zandalari, darling.

Honey, you thinking you’re prettier than me doesn’t mean much when I can just step on you because you’re half as tall as me.

As the dwarves say, all trees are felled at the same height…
