The Intuition Experiment Failed

@ the WoW dev team, you said in your developer notes for 11.1 that you will monitor the new Intuition talent for Arcane and make adjustments accordingly if it fails to meet expectations, it’s time to do just that.

The proc rate of 5% is way too low. The duration of 3 seconds is far too short forcing you to either cancel whatever spell you were currently casting when it procs or risk losing the proc. Even the proc aura is terrible and looks like it was created on a Friday afternoon right before it was time to clock out, as does the entire talent if we’re being real.

Without rehashing the sordid history of the double dipping fiasco, suffice it to say, everything that was done since has been one mistake after another and Intuition is just the latest and worst iteration to come out of that. You can’t design a game from a place of bad faith and that’s exactly what has been happening with the main goal no longer being making the game better but rather forcing the players to play the game a certain way. Nothing good can come of that.

If the goal is to integrate Arcane Barrage into Arcane’s single target rotation then it needs to be done in a predictable way rather than a completely random one but it must also be done in a way that doesn’t open the door for the min-max crowd to create a convoluted and confusing “optimal” rotation that regular players will try to blindly follow only to get frustrated when they inevitably fail. Admittedly that’s not an easy task but Intuition isn’t the right answer and frankly it moves us further away from achieving that goal than its predecessor Aethervision. In other words, we’re moving in the wrong direction.

Arcane needs a lot of hard work to get right, not yet more short sighted bandaid fixes that clash with preexisting talents and create a mess of counter synergies. It’s way past time to get started so let’s stop kicking the can down the road and get to work! You can start by looking at the mountain of detailed feedback that players, myself included, have been providing for years.

You know it’s bad when I’m actually agreeing with you. Although Intuition is much more enjoyable than Aethervision was since it brought back High Voltage.

Lmaooo!

No but really, it’s getting out of hand. How could anyone actually look at Intuition and think “that’s a good idea, let’s go with that!” Especially when they had so much time to come up with something else.

I know that historically they don’t do substantive changes mid expansion but when they’ve created such a garbled mess out of what was objectively a decent launch with these subsequent bad calls they have a responsibility to act.

It’s gonna be disastrous if they let things stand as they are rn for the remainder of the season, let alone the rest of the expansion.

I’m a newer player to arcane. And mage in general. I made this character probably like 2 months ago (if that) it hasn’t been long.

Anyhow I feel like my newish experience at the class and trying it before the patch and now is decent feedback to be taken from somebody who isn’t all that great and generally understands the class at a very basic level compared to others lol.

I think intuition makes a small part of the spec feel slightly less complicated to handle. And that is almost always a good thing imo. The case with intuition however is it isn’t very efficient. Just like OP had mentioned, the small time frame to shoot it out often forces me to stop other casts or I will miss it. And I do miss it sometimes which is frustrating.

Other times I get it out and it’s not even that satisfying, if I had to compare it to something it’s like working with a type writer. You reached the end of the paper and need to smack it back but it messes up your flow lol.

Maybe that would be my biggest issue with it. Just sort of too little time to hit the button.

With that I also agree hugely that the visual for the proc is really hard to see. It’s a lighter slightly larger effect outside of clear casting animation, nearly on top of it. It would be great if it was a slightly different color instead of a lighter version of the same color? Something like that maybe. Or a more obvious effect.

I did literally LOL when I read that.

Am I the only one that thinks Arcane Charges (the resource) are pointless anymore? 90% of my rotation when I play Arcane now, I’m max charges— or I get max charges essentially instantly with Intuition Arcane Barrage, through High Voltage Arcane Missiles, and with Arcane Orbs, and of course Touch of the Magi.

At this point it feels like a vestigial complexity on the spec since it’s hardly even a consideration during your rotation anymore. Most of the time you’re paying attention to your mana bar as a resource. I suppose making Arcane Charges easier to build has the effect of giving the spec more quality of life. But yeah, I don’t know. Am I missing something here?

I guess the Arcane Charges make it so you’re not just spamming Arcane Barrage instead of Arcane Blast though. But it’s almost like you hardly even cast Arcane Blast anymore anyway unless you’re doing a burn rotation in heavy single target.

I’d be curious to hear what people’s considerations would be regarding fixing Intuition. Would it be better if it was just a longer duration proc than 3 seconds? A higher proc chance than it has now (5%)? Or are there other problems since this change away from Aethervision that need addressed further?

I did actually chuckle at this.

This reminds me a little of Shadowlands beta. Shadow’s state was so bad it pierced the divide on void form and managed to unite players in agreeing it needed a more major change. I wouldn’t say it ended up in a good state. Hmm.

For some time now, the Arcane has stood out for its high mobility and Intuition helps maintain this, which is excellent!

Additionally, the rigid formula we had with Ethervision made the rotation very boring and also killed the interesting High Voltage talent and the gear bonus from Season 1 that has now been transformed into the Intuition talent.

The buff to Arcane Barrage also helped to strengthen its use, rather than just standing still and casting Arcane Blast. Along with Arcane Orb and High Voltage, we are much more likely to adopt a more mobile rotation through Arcane Barrage, as we have multiple ways to replenish our Arcane Charges and no longer need to cast Arcane Blast to buff another ability.

This was a huge step towards making the rotation smoother, freer, and more enjoyable, while also making it more mobile and making every talent feel like it was worth its salt in the end.

I hope Blizzard continues on this path, further improving Arcane Barrage, Arcane Missiles, and Arcane Orb.

None of things you list are because of Intuition but in spite of it. Intuition is an awful talent and that’s a purely objective statement. 5% proc chance and a 3 second proc duration is ridiculous as is the virtually nonexistent proc aura. The direction they’re moving in is entirely the wrong one.

I’ve thought a lot about this and I have a fix. Remove intuition entirely, and make arcane harmony refund 4 charges at 16 stacks or more.

It would be a slight damage upgrade, but the play style would feel more predictable and there wouldn’t be yet an additional buff to track (since we already tend to want to cast barrage when we have high harmony stacks to avoid over-capping). A relatively harmless talent like Energy Reconstitution or Static Cloud could be moved up to where it is now.

Long time Arcane player here. I’ve been playing arcane all the way back in BFA and I always enjoy playing arcane because of its single target damage. I do agree that the 3 second duration is very short for my liking. But the one thing I absolutely cannot stand is the proc aura/image whatever you want to call it. It looks way too similar to the proc for arcane missiles! Sometimes ill be pressing my button for arcane missile only to realize it was a proc for Arcane Barrage or the other way around. I hope they make some changes or revert where the proc for Arcane Barrage used to be at.

Couldn’t agree more, and the fact that you’re a long time Arcane Mage (and a good one from the looks of it) who doesn’t use the forums and yet felt compelled to speak out about this should tell Blizzard everything they need to know about how bad of a talent Intuition is.

So I’ve been working on recreating the Blizzard Mage HUD with weakauras, and I just added the Intuition Procc to my weakaura.

Guess what the HUD-Texture-image for Intuition is called in WoW’s Files…

“Generic Arc 1”.

For reference: Almost every HUD-Texture is named after it’s paired spell, Maelstrom Weapon is called such, etc.

So for the Texture to be named “Generic Arc 1” means that Blizzard must have just grabbed the first thing out of the Stock-Textures-Bin.

I found this Thread after thinking that Intuition was Bugged, cause there was no way the Buff was really so short that I didn’t have time to read the Aura Tooltip and had to find it in the Combat Log.

Intuition might be the dumbest Talent I’ve ever seen lol.

I get the feeling Blizzard is going to do a big rework on Arcane and is making it bad on purpose for now.

Wish I could say I was surprised by this but sadly I am not.

Well they’ve been making it from bad to worse for years now so this is either the world’s longest long game or they’re simply incompetent and have no idea what to do with the spec after they essentially spun out a completely new spec, in the Devastation Evoker, out of what should have been the Arcane rework. My money is on the latter though I would relish being proven wrong.

To be perfectly honest though, I don’t think I will be around to see what ends up happening because I am just beyond tired and burned out, and frankly, after 20 years apparently so are Blizzard because they haven’t put out anything decent since Legion.

Welcome to the last 8 years of my life
