The Internet has not liberated us, it made us prisoners to our own products

When the World Wide Web made the internet accessible 30 years ago, it was a bold and new form of technology that many think would bring much promise to society. Many “freethinkers” believed it would normalize taboo subjects, it would encourage discussion and debate, and it would help us get over some hindrances in tradition.

But three decades in, it has done the opposite. It has made taboo subjects even more sensitive than before, it has silenced differentiating views, and made us get stuck to traditions.
Worse yet, it has allowed misinformation and conspiracy theories to spread like wildfire. A good chunk of the public believes in absurd stuff thanks to the internet and social media. It has become a good platform for propaganda for radicals to brainwash people. It has allowed sites like Reddit to be a hivemind where people aren’t allowed to have an opinion that’s different from what is established. People are chained to the internet and I’m afraid there’s no turning back.

I always say, Hitler worked because he arose around the same time as mass media with the proliferation of radio and television and people were still bound by old world views. They weren’t cultured and believed the BS. When science advances too far beyond the ability of culture to adjust there’s a risk.
