Classic is looking like it’ll be incredibly successful. 60k server queues weeks before launch simply to reserve names. Dozens of the biggest streamers/youtubers will be focused on Classic content for months. Even the Classic general forums are more active than the retail general forums. What exactly does this mean for the future of retail WoW?
Get ready for the flood of “Classic forum’s that way” responses.
Classic will most definitely be successful - question is, for how long?
I think retail will be fine because it will always be the current and future version of WOW with infinite potential.
Hype is just hype. It’s about to release so there’s naturally lots of excitement and curiosity. That doesn’t mean it’ll stay at that level months from now.
I think it’ll do just fine on its own, but in the long run it’s not going to usurp retail or anything.
Sink or Swim
I wasn’t old enough to play classic (well I was 7) so I will definitely dip my toe in the water. For how long? Not sure.
I’m trying classic at my wife’s behest, but after reading about the qol changes since classic, I told her I’d try it with the caveat I may give up any time:)
In particular I suspect I’ll be annoyed by the lack of enchanting vellum. Gawd.
I have no doubt that it will be popular for several months… whether that continues after the 6 month mark remains to be seen.
The 6-month mark is right around when phase 2/3 will be happening. Dire Maul, Kazzak, Azuregos, and BWL will be added to the game around this time so I think it’ll still be doing well.
We shall see.
I am excited for it, buuut I have my doubts about anything more than the hardcore players from back in the day sticking around and I just don’t think the majority of what we are seeing now is them.
We shall see though.

60k isn’t much
-
Streamers jump on any bandwagon because that’s what streamers do
-
Hype is hype?
-
You’d be flipping crazy to think retail WoW would be over-take by old school classic
-
Get out of here, troll!
Classic will be popular for a couple of months, then Blizzcon will announce new stuff for retail, and people will come back.
Some of these “streamers” just want to hype up a new cash cow for them. It’s a business. Classic was fun 15 years ago when it was vanilla. That type of experience no lifing the game, not my bag anymore.
Far less to do, less accesability for the average player, and a lot more time spent forming and running to groups that’s actually playing
60k is gigantic for reserving names on one (of twelve) servers weeks before the supposed failure that is Classic has even gone live.
It’ll still be incredible marketing and will get potentially hundreds of thousands of twitch/youtube viewers interested in Classic.
I think you’re crazy if at this point you don’t think Classic is overtaking retail.
New store mounts? A new type of world quest? Doesn’t sound very interesting.
Classic will be popular until people realize why we were all so exited when BC was announced.
My only hope is that they keep on doing their best to continue making the new expansions as fun as they can for the duration they are out. I guess my fear is that they would slightly rely on Classic to stem boredom in between the expansions. I think I will try Classic but just for a little tiny bit for fun but retail is where I’m at and am looking forward to the next expansion details!
WoW
If there are 60k active players world wide after 6 months id be shocked and i say thats a huge win for the players and Blizzard
Well, I don’t know about you, Pict, but I’m buying some slippers, a robe, three wheels of the commemorative Vanilla cheese, several cans of the Murloc roe (I know…It’s way overpriced, but hey), and a sweet reproduction of what a very reputable mage says is petrified gnome scat. Good times.
Get real, Blizzcon will excite people if/when they announce a new expansion. History has proven this over and over.
60K is nothing. Vanilla had millions of players.
or potentially far less. How long will people be interested in MC runs?
Lol.
vs no new content at all? Also lol if you think that is everything new that gets added. New raids, new dungeons, new stories, new races, new classes, new tmogs, new battel pets, new titles, new achievements, ect. Classic will never have any of those things.
A 60k server queue on a single server simply to reserve names weeks before Classic has even gone live. If you don’t think that’s substantial, you’re lying to yourself.
