obviously people are already talking about tbc, and if that happens i hope it is done in such a way that classic remains its own standalone game & not something that transforms into burning crusade. something to the effect of being able to copy & transfer your classic characters onto new tbc realms seems fitting.
as for classic? barring no new content, i think something to the effect of diablo’s ladder system would be interesting.
a new set of servers to be released once every year or three. these servers will start in phase 1, allow no transfers & progress through the phases in the same manner as we’re currently going through. after they go through all phases & the next set of servers is ready to be released, the current new servers are then merged with past servers & it is again repeated.
this both allows a condensed & growing population of geared 60s, as well as keeps alive the journey from fresh to epic in a near infinite manner.
thoughts?

The way Blizzard is handling the servers there might not be much of a future, people are leaving in droves.

Classic has no future. It’s 15 year old content.

“People” are likely largely consisting of retail players simply looking to consume content out of boredom.
Yet vanilla PS were popular for 15 years

I can’t wait for TBC servers, classic vanilla is litterally the waiting room for the better version of the game.

Are they?
Queue times, layers…
Sure Coronavirus Quarantines, but… there’s a pretty solid core, at least it seems to be a bigger pop than Diablo II, which still has resetting ladders, and servers supporting those who play them.
They had a good-sized base to start with and a lot of bored, stuck-at-home people have given it a boost. However, there’s a ton of angry people over how badly Blizzard is bungling server issues, BG issues, and so on.
As the Corona virus eases up I think we’ll see the side effects of Blizzards missteps more clearly.
Hmm… are they? I mean, haters gonna hate, so whatever, right?
I don’t think there was ever any expectation that the spike in numbers at the beginning would be the same population numbers over the long term.
Sure. It would be incredibly easy to blame the predicted, and expected decline in players over time on whatever fits whoever’s narrative we would like to use.
It might be interesting to overlay graphs of the population data on similar graphs from Vanilla population data.
Well I personally know a bunch of people who are done. Guildies, real life friends and family, and so on. Plus people on the servers I’m on seem pretty riled up about the issues, then we have the forums and stuff like Reddit.
I don’t think all those people will quit but the relative amount of discontent and noise about it has multiplied quite a bit lately. It seems to indicate that a bunch of people are just done with it.
We’ll see how it plays out.

Sounds like a very Vanilla-like experience. Changes during Vanilla caused a lot of people to quit.
Indeed.
I’ve put considerable time into 3 servers, and on both factions. I’ve also done “relatively reasonable” exploration into several other servers, to get a sense of the communities.
I think those who have any reason to complain are very tiny minorities. But, what do I know? /shrug

Flying is one of the features that I am anticipating the most!

I like this idea.
The actual community around true lovers of Classic by comparison to people who are just here to see what it was all about is much smaller, I think.
Should not need more than 2 - 4 servers to let them all be happy, and it would be interesting to see how those servers pan out every fresh cycle.
I would like to see at least one of each server type, PvE, PVP, RP, RPPVP with a population cap of 6k players.

I love this, outside of naxx I really havent liked anything in classic an that lines up pretty perfect with my vanilla experience.
Classic doesn’t have a “future”. We’re going up to crusade/wrath and never looking back. This version is crap compared to those. We’re only here because those are not yet an option. They’ll keep open a few meme realms for classic but barely anyone will be on them after that. Ideally, they should just do classic, crusade, wrath, dump the rest.

Tbc waiting room as far as I’m concerned

One sub, three options:
- farm naxx forever
- retail
- fresh tbc without transfer economy crashing classic characters, with either a standalone cassic to tbc server, or paid transfer well after tbc rush.
When Classic pops are gutted severely after tbc launch, the prophecy shall be fulfilled:
" you thought you did, but you didnt "
(and some should stop demanding opening launch classic to tbc servers, you were never promised them and are on record 10000000 times saying that all versions of WoW were inferior to vanilla…plus…nobody expected to transfer from classic to retail or vice versa…why start with tbc?)

Its a lot better than that, I am having fun, and classic wow sets the state for TBC by at least getting people to pick classes that are not exactly the best for TBC. Some will re roll new characters because thats what they do, but most will stick with their original class and character. That is something we gotta hope for because if they do some sort of fresh server junk its gonna be private TBC servers where 99% of the population is horde, and if you want to raid that is the only option.
Since I refuse to play horde it will be mostly just me, but hey I can gank my friends then LOL.
They 100% will do this and might be ready down the line to transition a server or two from classic to tbc. No matter what, classic server participation will absolutely plummet.
The 1-60 architecture is very different. A few tweaks wont be enough and serious looks at transfer hopping, and injecting fresh servers with lvl 60s, with all their gold…no way.
Besides tbc gear is immediately bis. The journey to classic wont be a consideration for the minmaxer.
As for being like pservers at 99% horde…the only ones who care are the bg wpvp arena folks and if they cant remember or look up how utterly ridic those systems are, then they all deserve each other.
Tldr: dont bother prepping for tbc, youll be mad
