The Fishing Profession In Wow

When I first started playing Wow back in the day I took the profession of Fishing, as well as First Aid, just because they were free. My first character was a hunter. So fishing came in handy for a character with little money. I could cook up some fish using cooking skill. And make food for me and my pet.

The only problem I had with fishing was that although fun at first I found it kinda boring. Fish and cooked fish dishes could be sold at the auction house but it was not lucrative.
There were times that I just needed some peace and I would go fishing around the Barrens. Just to have a nice relaxing time-out as it were.

My question to you is Do you fish in Wow? How do you like the fishing mechanics. Is there anything that you think could be improved? I always thought that it would of been so cool to be able to fish using a net instead of a rod. So that you could get more fish a lot faster. Fishing is a slow process.

So, Do you fish in-game? Do you enjoy fishing? Do you find that you can make gold selling fish on the auction house? Do you find it relaxing?

I look forward to reading your replies. Thanks.

most people dont sell the fish on the AH But the feast
and without the fishing joke going around the paladins would not get the ashbringer skin
but its a good way to get mats for feast and finding rare items also.

nets would not be fun but i do wish we had the legion fishing skill which we pull the entire school up at one

I just got a profession equipment for Fishing yesterday. I’m going to do some virtual fishing once I get home.

Fishing can also be an easy way for Hunters to feed their pets (if their pets eat fish) to heal them quickly when out of battle.
There have been recipes other than for cooking in the past, so that may happen again. But mainly fishing is for cooking.

I don’t do fishing often, but if you’re waiting for LFR or some other group content, then it’s something to do.

Yes. Honestly, fishing is one of my favorite video game pasttimes/ā€˜minigames’, when it’s not over-designed.

I love fishing in WoW, and I went to the Shire in LotRO as soon as I could specifically to grab fishing (and it basically works the same way, so thank god for that). I like to fish in OSRS, as well, though there are more varied ways to ā€˜fish’ there. In ESO, 90% of my income was from fishing - both selling stacks of it to players, and (especially now, with Sharp’s passive) selling trophy fish to merchants. Non-MMOs, I love fishing in Nier (Replicant and Automata), and even kind of like the fishing in Wartales.

Think the only games I ever don’t fish in often are ones that overdesign or needlessly complicate their fishing mechanics to the point of annoyance; XIV and Stardew come to mind in this regard.

I think they’re fine. Fishing doesn’t need to be complicated or overdesigned. I vastly prefer it when fishing is a chill activity I can do whenever I feel like, and whenever I need a brain break, or just want to enjoy the world around me and space out for a while.

If anything, I’d just prefer only having to slap the fishing button for cast and reel, rather than poking the bobber. But it’s nothing egregious, I just personally find it easier; ESO and LotRO both work this way, and uh… at least 40% of my total 700-something hours in ESO was spent fishing. So clearly, I like it that way. :dracthyr_hehe:

That’s why I like it, personally. Besides, especially now in retail, you don’t really need a ton of fish fast most of the time, anyway.

Haven’t tried selling fish in WoW or LotRO, but man, it’s lucrative in ESO.

you can now use the interact function to reel in a fish. no need to click the bobber!

there’s also a ā€œbetter fishingā€ addon that lets you use a single keybind to cast and retrieve

Blizzard have done a little to improve fishing but have also removed a number of ways that was fun early in the game.

In dragonflight we have things like:

Coins that can be fished up and given to an NPC for rewards
Message in a Bottle items that can be fished up for goodies
Fishing included in zone quests
Special fish that can be used for both Inscription and Cooking

All of these things are going in the right direction; the problem is the rarity of the first two. I have levelled a number of alts to cap in fishing without getting a single bottle, and at most a couple of coins. In the early days you could fish up boxes which contained mats, gold and other possible useful items. And there were the floating wreck patches that often gave even better rewards (I’ve been told there are wrecks in the Dragon Isles but I’ve never found one).

As I say, I think its a good direction but I’d like to see more done; increase the chances of fishing up someting useful for example. Even if it had involved a level of skill to make the chances more likely.

ESO also has a neat idea: there is one purple item which is a rare (but not impossible) item to fish up which is part of a recipe for a high level very good consumable. That would be a fun thing to add as it would benefit both professions.

I only lvl fishing and cooking for achives
