We know Sargeras and the Burning Crusade wield Fel and Chaotic magic.
According to the Cosmology chart, there is the “Disorder” Realm, where this Fel/chaos are born from.
It may sound obvious, but still a genuine query: Sargeras, once a agent of Order, got influenced by the Nathrezim/Dreadlords to defect the Order Pantheon and join the Disorder “team”? It sounds weird to me since the Dreadlords are spys from Death Realm.
So it also means Sargeras isn’t the true leader of the Legion? I mean, he may be the leader of the Burning Crusade, if we consider him as a commander of this specific battalion (The Legion, burning crusade), meaning there is other Fel/Disorder Leaders comanding other armys to conquer things and ALSO a Disorder Pantheon, where Sargeras is just a pawn/Army commander?
If we are to believe the Chronicle story, the Twisting Nether is the disorder realm, and Fel would be different from other cosmic forces in that it came from the clashing of the Light and the Void. Disorder having a pantheon of it’s own seems counterintuitive- Sargeras, being a being of Order imposes a hierarchy on chaos.
At the moment, we can’t confirm, but many people speculate that this is the case.
He is. The Burning Legion is his army. He formed it, so he could destroy the Void Lords.
Now, there’s an interesting thought. A Pantheon for each realm is certainly possible, and might be cool to see. I must confess, I’ve been rather harsh towards expanding the story into the Greater Planes, but I’m slowly warming to them.
I’d imagine that if there is a Disorder Pantheon, then Sargerus would be as powerful as its dieties. However, “power levels” in WoW are pretty meaningless, as Blizzard will just write whatever entity to be as powerful as they need that entity to be, and we can only ascertain vaguely where things are in relation to one another.
Fel is the name of the energy natural to the domain of Chaos. Sort of like the energy of the domain of Death is called Anima.
Sargeras when faced with the Void and its desire to turn the mortal plane into an unending nightmare helscape fell into a state of nihilistic madness in which he decided a dead universe was better than one controlled by the Void. He (like the rest of the Titan Pantheon) seems to of been wholly unaware of other cosmic powers and their own plans for the mortal plane, oddly enough.
Actually speaking of a chaos pantheon… Chronicle does make note of demons in the depths of the Twisting Neather so terrifying powerful even Sargeras avoided them and never tried to subjugate them into his army. If there is a formal pantheon of Chaos then it is likely these demons.
Actually it was the Black Tome Questline in Suramar that said that not the Chronicle.
The Black Tome is said in the Questline to be able to summon Fel Lords even the Legion refuses to meddle with!
The fact that the Legion brought the Tome to Azeroth indicates they have no problem summoning the Fel Lords to Azeroth despite the Legion not wanting to mess with them which indicates that whatever the Fel Lords will do to Azeroth is preferable to what the Old Gods will do!
Something to keep in mind is that “Disorder” and “Chaos” aren’t necessarily synonymous concepts. Disorder as framed by WoW through the fel and the Twisting Nether is objectively the dissolution of Order, while Chaos would be rampancy without purpose, including the breaking down of Order and the building up of structure and Order with no direction or intent. See: concentrated arcane energy spontaneously generating crystalline formations all over the place without purpose when left to its own devices in the absence of spellwork or intent to guide it.
The Mantid Paragon Iyyokuk wasn’t entirely wrong when he said “Chaos is order unrecognized by a lesser mind!” Despite being the magic of Order, arcane energy is chaotic when not controlled because to the observer, uncontrolled arcane energy runs rampant according to a design that isn’t comprehensible, and therefore seems to not exist at all. But that doesn’t make it Disordered.
As Disorder also has its own internal set of “rules” to how it behaves, as seen in the predictably entropic corrosion that the fel causes to its surroundings and the way it imparts its own “hunger” for other energies onto those it corrupts. As far as we’ve seen there is no true cosmic force of “Chaos” in WarCraft because for something to fundamentally be “of Chaos” would be to have no consistent laws or rules governing its nature, including how it interacts with the other cosmic forces.
Chaos would arguably have no agency of its own, which is what makes it the sort of disembodied “goal” of the various threats seeking to upend our reality’s status quo. By undoing the balance in cosmic forces, chaos is what would result from the resulting absence of consistent rules and limitations determining how everything works between them in the physical universe. Up would become down, except when it isn’t. Life would be Death, except when it’s still Life. Order and Disorder would be indistinguishable. Light and Void would be interchangeable. That would be the essence of “chaos” in a cosmic sense.
How would Hexidecimal, Megabyte and Discord react to Sargeras and his Burning Legion?
All 3 have made attempts at seizing control over the world(and in the case of Megabyte: stamping barcodes on the heads of his Sprite subjects) and ruled like a despot despite thriving on Chaos!
I imagine Megabyte with his love of Chaos would reign in a manner where he’d single out one of the Sprites he barcoded and do something random to them! He sorts/barcodes things yet is Chaotic to what he sorts! That is an interesting form of Chaos!
We also need to take into consideration context. Context to who? Yeah, no one wants to hear this never again more than me but, who wrote the Chronicles, the Titans. Maybe whatever that cosmetic power is, they fundamentally disagree with it and slapped Disorder over it.
Seems most of the cosmic powers have their own vision or goals to how the universe should be, extending their reach over it. Maybe the Disorder goal is just to see everyone else’s plan fall apart.
By the Titan’s own admission, the demons never seemed to have much of a plan/goal before Sargeras made them adhere to one. They, as Chaos tends to do… just did whatever seemed like fun at the time. If that happened to mean burning a planet in the Great Dark to cinders and chowing on all the souls then well, you have to find something to pass the time.
Which kinda of goes with Raselle what stated, quoting of the NPCs on chaos. The Titans perhaps can’t fathom the demonic ‘plans’ because their brains aren’t wired that way. It just wasn’t the order of things they know. It took one of their own for them to make any sense of it.
Yeah, but it works in Warhammer, which is probably the most popular representation of chaos. Most things in fantasy are contradictory. We are playing an expansion where we are killing things that are already dead.
Fel is not the only form of Chaos as the Warp Energies of the Netherstorm are shown on the Cosmology Chart for Disorder!
Of course instead of charring the environment and growing jagged growths like the Fel (https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/wowpedia/images/6/6b/6.2_fel_style_guide.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20190920201743) the Warp simply corrodes everything!
Haven’t seen much running rampant…
I’ve seen lifeforms go insane when Blue Dragons abruptly redirect the stuff through their homes but the Energies don’t seem to be running rampant!
I’ve seen places Crystalize when Arcane is used in Crystallization Spells to create a constant source of Arcane Energy(Highborne used the Spell creating Crystalsong Forest while the Nightborne used it to crystalize Zarkhenar)! In these cases the Crystallization is deliberate and controlled!
https://wow.gamepedia.com/Leyline_Abuse and https://wow.gamepedia.com/Crystalsong_Forest#Creation
The only time Arcane becomes becomes uncontrollable is when the container can’t contain the sheer amount of Arcane such as in the case of the Arcan’dor(which explodes fusing everything to each other) and the Nexus(which has a rift open into reality)!
Warhammer has 4 forms of Chaos(Scheming/Tzeentch, War/Khorne, Hedonism/Slaanesh, Life/Nurgle and Death/Great Horned Rat) yet lacks 2 forms of Chaos: Random for the sake of Random and Fake Order(that barcodes everyone and sets up futuristic high tech cities yet does random things for the lulz)!
