The Dungeon Editor

StarCraft and Warcraft have map editors. Diablo randomizes their maps a little bit.

What if WoW could implement a dungeon editor/creator. Take it back old school to the days of dungeons and dragons where there was a dungeon master.

A player could create a dungeon for people to play. Afterwards it could be liked or disliked.

It could have generic loot tables.

And maybe a Dungeon Master role where you can summon mobs into the game, or create traps. Or debuff the annoying DPS that wants to pull everything.

Or blizzard could implement some content themselves. That might be asking too much though

That would be a lot of work, but it could be really cool to actually go down inside a WoW dungeon that you put together. There would have to be some guidelines I guess, if you had loot and stuff, but there could be mob “templates” that could be customizable, and different skins and artwork.

Maybe they could do it with battlegrounds too. There could be a set size or battleground type (Capture the Flag, Domination, etc) and players could make different maps with variations on arrangement and tileset, etc.

They could have an on-going or seasonal competition where the best submissions would be made evergreen.

That would all be a crazy amount of work, but it’s cool to think about.

I think their creative energies is being restricted by “the man”. If they put a tool in our hands to let us build things for the game, it would be good for everyone.

Player made content usually sucks, either it’s made to be as short as possible while offering the most reward, or it’s so poorly constructed/thought out that the content becomes painful to look at let alone run.

Ok, but those would get down voted. Negative score should be removed and deleted. OP suggestion is a good one.

Even if we can’t make dungeon content, this could be a good fit for player housing building.

Torchlight 2 says high. The community made that game great with mods. Also, the huge mods in Skyrim are like entirely new games. I think you’ve just had bad experiences.

Pretty much this. I’m amazed we made it this far into the xpac without a new dungeon.

No you know what, let players make content, let players decide what we want to play, let me make a crappy map and let others take it and edit it and make it better, let us decide which content is good and which ones can be implemented to include loot and be used in a progression system.

Blizzard can only make so much, no , Blizzard decide to only make so much, they don’t want to spend the money to make something that may end up losing them money, they are a business before a game company after all, so why not let us spend our time to give them something for free? It will only benefit us.

But I also like the idea of randomly generated content, it may end up giving us something we can look at soloing in the future like they have done with rifts in D3. Imagine starting in Atal and ending up in Blackrock, you work your way down into the depths of an endless game mode than only finishes when you have had enough and hearth out, an ever increasing difficulty the more you play and the further you get into the content.

Think D2, you start at the top and work your way down to hell, why not have an RPG that does just that? They have enough content to cut and paste and make it work.

Walk through a doorway from BRD and end up outside in Goldshire only to find a cave that leads to something resembling Vash’jir where you need breathing potions or specific party members to conquer it or find a different pathway, like the dungeons that are south of Uldum.

Some of us are obviously sick and tired of playing the same content over and over and it may be a welcome change to have .

I don’t understand the mechanics of what it would take to make this work, but I like the idea a lot.

I used to love exploring simple caves and Dungeons in Diablo. Was discouraged when i first came to wow and realized I couldn’t just explore the Deadmines by myself.

The easiest explanation would be something from my own experience, which was using the Creation Kit for Skyrim. That particular system worked by having pre-built “blocks” for rooms (usually parts of rooms, to be more accurate) which you could just place in a blank space and fill up with NPCs and other “doodads” (objects and other stuff). Things were highly customizable, allowing you to edit stats, AI, abilities/spells, traits, and so on.

Blizz’ earlier level editors for the RTS games largely worked the same way, but could be somewhat limited; this is both good and bad, as the limitations made it easier to comprehend. I never really tried the more recent ones, and Starcraft II had a VERY robust system (though it did feel hard to get into).

For something to be implemented into WoW, it would be along the lines of the later systems; probably something closer to Skyrim’s Creation Kit for ease of use and flexibility.

It could be a lot of fun too, but how to access it would be somewhat tricky within an online MMORPG like WoW. Perhaps a queue or separate lobby at the least, where players could show off their own creations (the data for how everything is arranged would be a small download, but the base objects should all be in the game files).

For actual content like dungeons, or at least those accessible by random queue, Blizz would have to have some sort of active and ongoing evaluation system for stuff they’d actually want to implement. This would be find stuff that isn’t HORRIFICALLY overtuned or undertuned, and fitting the suitable design critera (not too long/tedious/complicated), and avoiding “undesirable content” (offensive and adult in nature).

Anything goes for players showing off their own stuff, but anything for the masses would have to be carefully checked first.

That being said, it’s VERY easy to create overtuned and all-but-impossible content to clear. Just make the numbers/stats too big to deal with.

I really do like the idea of this. Reminds of a custom scenario that was made for WC2 a long time ago that picked up where Beyond Dark Portal left off. Was a ton of fun.

That would be fun. We can’t have that.

World of warcraft Maker.
I dig it. Maybe a class designer, too. Maybe the devs would take a hint then.

To quickly comment on that idea… uh, I’d actually advise against it.

Just as I said earlier, it’s easy to make overtuned content.
… it’s just as easy, if not easier, to create overpowered player abilities/classes.

The overpowered punts would be created within 10-15 minutes of launching the editor, and most of that time will be spent:

  • Finding the actual functionality
  • Experimenting to find out the “most fun” value to send things flying but not actually cause everything to just instantly disappear
  • Uploading it

The actual creation of the overpowered punt will be about 10 seconds.

I still think it would be a cool concept, bet the devs would even love it. Can hear them now…“Thank God for this, let the players get abused over content for awhile!”

Neverwinter has this feature in it, so it’s not unheard of.

First, any player created content couldn’t be reward breaking. That is, you’d have to only get generic non-progression rewards for completing player generated content.

Second, they limit who creates the content to those willing to pay extra for the tools. So not everyone is tossing junk into the hopper.

Also, I agree that there would need to be an isolated area, away from the main playerbase, where players could “PTR” the player created content and only the best of the best would make it to live.

Outside those restrictions, I know players would step up and the content would probably be exceptional.

Can create the fabled Hogger Raid!

Not fabled, they had it at a live stream event once. Hogger wiped the floor.
