I know there has been a lot of discussions already on the recent policy change banning boosting communities and I am in the camp of this was the wrong way to approach boosting communities. Before I talk about the problems of boosting communities, I would like to list out the pro’s and con’s I see with these types of communities, both personal experience and the larger pictures.
Personal Pro’s:
- I have met plenty of really great people who I have personally boosted with
- Boosting was an easy way for me to be able to pay my WoW subscription (Also a pro to some of my WoW friends who don’t have the funds to pay for a WoW sub)
- It was an easy and convenient way for me to find boosts for my alts
Personal Con’s:
- Some communities were so big that the chance I would get into a boost is near zero
- Dealing with advertisers can be a pain
- If boosters are not being personally picked, there is a chance that the run fails
Big Picture Pro’s:
- Reputable boosting communities made it fast and easy for people to find boosts to allow them to quickly get into higher content
- Communities keep people playing the game. The boosters are able to experience a harder raid.
- Community Discords made it easier for a buyer to find the best price for the boost of their choice.
Big Picture Con’s:
- The trade chat spam, so much spam.
- LFG finder has so many people selling boosts.
- Many low population servers that were viable to boost from because of boosting communities are now much hard, if not impossible, to boost from. This may cause players to move to already full servers. (Think shadowlands release queue times with even more players on huge servers like Area 52 and Illidan.)
Overall, I am in the camp that boosting communities are overall a benefit to players, even if they have their problems. So the question is how to mitigate the con’s of boosting communities?
Suggested Fixes:
- Create a new opt-in channel for boosting.
- Create a longer time in between posting.
- This one is a bit of a stretch but allows for cross-realm gold trading to allow for low population server viability.
