For those who don’t know, the official controller support makes the face buttons (ABXY on an Xbox Controller) non-combat actions. ConsolePort, the addon that’s been around forever handles all of those actions with one button that is also contextually tab targeting. On top of that, there’s no way to remap these buttons when ConsolePort allows you to rebind everything (and this is actually built into the game’s retail controller support).
How did the controller developer decide to fix this after getting this feedback from tons of people? Add a toggle that swaps th dpad and face butons in combat. So now if you’re a rouge, and you need to cheap shot someone, your button literally jumps from one side of the controller to the other depending on your combat status.
This completely flies in the face of muscle memory in stressful situations and once again tries to unsuccessfully solve a problem that some open source addon developer figured out years and years ago.
Please can we just hire the consoleport guy to fix this, it’s clear the wow forever team doesn’t actually play this game.

Wait can you really not rebind a controller? I’ve let my kid play on controller some but haven’t really messed with it myself.

So WoW has gamepad support, it’s had it for a long time. The way it works is you can bind a gamepad button or chord to an actionbar slot or anything in the keybind menu. But there’s obviously still a need for a mouse because the UI is 90% mouse driven. You can just press your spells with the controller, or like, open the map.
Consoleport builds a UI on top of this, and makes the game navigate-able with the controller, but it’s an addon.
Controller support is like consoleport, it’s primary add is the user interface, but it also hard codes actions to buttons and it makes it completely imposssible to change the base keybinds, it builds its own system that you have to use where you can only assign stuff to buttons blizzard hasn’t taken.
Idk about that. With action combat on and the interact key bound you shouldn’t have too. Didn’t even need to mouse to start the game or select chars from the launcher.
Regardless, the new system hard codes everything which was a weird and regressing decision.
I’m working on a long writeup about controller play as someone who plays FFXIV on controller exclusively. Wow’s controller support is actually coming along nicely if this is the alpha. We definitely need a way to rebind the ABXY buttons, though. I can tell you, anyone coming from FFXIV will hate jump being A, for one. Anyway, yes, it needs a lot of work. Let’s keep the suggestions coming!
Also FWIW I tried Consoleport a few times and always found it a bit weird, personally. But it had consistency, which was a good thing.
What is different about the way FFXIV does it, how do you jump?
FFXIV standard controls are Jump with Y/triangle, select target with A/cross, map with X/square, and cancel with B/circle. In menus, X/square is always “apply”. Unlike wow, d-pad doesn’t have any neutral commands assigned, it’s always targeting. Left and right to cycle through on-screen targets (you can set filters and toggle freely to select enemies/friendlies/etc, fully configurable.) and up/down will always select from your party list (if not in a party, that’s just you and your pet if you have one)
It is a very deep system if you want to configure it a lot, but it is easy to pick up.
I’ve repeatedly pointed to the implementation of controller use in POE2. They do it so much better - while still not being great.
Wait the buttons are hardcoded? That’s insanity.
