The ''/console cvar_default'' is trash, any way to revert the changes to what they were before?

So I had a bug with my camera and read the answers from some GMs real quick to fix it, saw Ironthorne say this was the only way and I did it without thinking twice, turns out it reset absolutely everything about my Interface and the way I used to play. Tried to backup the WTF folder with the one I had saved but didn’t do anything. Any help please? Why is this in the game and why would a GM not warn people about the risks?

Sorry, don’t think so. It’s the ultimate in UI reset if nothing else is working.

Ironthorne to my knowledge has not been around a while, and the game has changed significantly since.

No. To quote the wiki:

To reset the whole user interface:

/console cvar_default

Changing a character or account-specific CVar cannot be undone or reverted by uninstalling, repairing the game or deleting the WTF folder as they will be synchronized from the server again.

No, once you’ve wiped it, any changes are gone.

The issue with WoW, in general, is that they store almost all CVARs on the server. In principle, it’s a nice idea and means that whatever computer you log in with, you can retain any settings you’ve changed. In practice, bad addon devs have a bad habit of tampering with CVARs and especially non-UI exposed CVARs. So once a setting gets bugged, there’s no way to revert it within the regular UI (you can use addons that pull the CVAR list from the server and will show you entries with non-default values, if you want). So when it comes to situations like that, that’s where the heavy-handed /console cvar_default comes into play.

Ideally, Blizzard would lockdown addons from touching non-UI exposed CVARs, but then hundreds of people would cry on the forums/reddit/twitter about it breaking some addon or another, but would make it seem like 99% of the playerbase is against the change and that the sky is falling.

My best suggestion is to redo all of your settings and once everything is the way you want it, log out, close the client competely and then make a backup of you WTF folder(config.wtf). That will at least save a good portion of settings like all the stuff you’d find in the normal menus. If you use the stock Blizzard UI and edit it, those will also be saved in that WTF folder, so you can back them up(edit-mode-cache-account.txt).
