The Colors of Channels in the Chat Box Are Changing

I reported this bug via the in-game tool, but it occurred to me that it would be easier to explain it here, where I’m not limited by character count. I’d also like to keep tracking it over multiple days to find a pattern, so being able to edit my post or add comments would be useful.

Anyway! The problem is that I have set custom colors for some of the channels in my chat box, but yesterday and today, they began to change on log-in. This is what they originally were:

  1. General = default beige
  2. Local Defense = default beige
  3. Battle.net community = blue
  4. World PvP community = red
  5. RP community = purple

However, when I logged in yesterday (Feb. 26, 2022), the colors had shifted by one. My channels now looked like this:

  1. General = default beige
  2. Local Defense = blue
  3. Battle.net community = red
  4. World PvP community = purple
  5. RP community = default beige

Today (Feb. 27, 2022), they shifted again, but with not quite the same pattern:

  1. General = blue
  2. Local Defense = red
  3. Battle.net community = red
  4. World PvP community = purple
  5. RP community = default beige

So, for whatever reason, channels 1 and 2 continued to take the color of the channel beneath them, but channels 3, 4 and 5 stayed the same.

I want to keep tracking this, so I’ll be back every time I see a change. Everything in my soul wants to change the colors back to what they should be, but I will resist for science’s sake.

By the way, all of these channels are located under the “General” tab of my chat box.

EDIT Feb. 27, 2022, 8:05 p.m. CST:
I forgot to include a sixth channel. One of my AddOns, Total RP 3, automatically creates this weird channel called xtensionxtooltip2, and since I never use it, it didn’t occur to me to include it in my original post. It has joined the party, though, so now’s a good time to mention it.

I logged in a second time today, and the colors have changed again. Now I’m seeing:

  1. General = red
  2. Local Defense = red
  3. Battle.net community = purple
  4. World PvP community = default beige
  5. RP community = default beige
  6. xtensionxtooltip2 = blue

The AddOn channel (#6) was default beige in all the other examples I mentioned. This is the first time it has turned an unusual color. Now, I’m considering the possibility that the AddOn might be the cause of the issue. I’m going to experiment with disabling it.

EDIT Feb. 27, 2022, 8:10 p.m. CST:
I disabled the AddOn, and after the game reloaded, these are my channels:

  1. General = red
  2. Local Defense = purple
  3. Battle.net community = default beige
  4. World PvP community = default beige
  5. RP community = blue
  6. xtensionxtooltip2 = red

Then I deleted channel #6 and /reload-ed. Nothing seemed to have changed, so I restarted the game and still see no change.

  1. General = red
  2. Local Defense = purple
  3. Battle.net community = default beige
  4. World PvP community = default beige
  5. RP community = blue

Because of this, I thought the AddOn was the culprit, so I re-enabled it and restarted the game again to see if the colors had moved, but they hadn’t.

  1. General = red
  2. Local Defense = purple
  3. Battle.net community = default beige
  4. World PvP community = default beige
  5. RP community = blue
  6. xtensionxtooltip2 = red

So now I’m once again unsure if the AddOn is the culprit. I’m going to keep it disabled for a few days and see what happens.

This has been bugging the crap out of me for months now. I keep putting in bug reports for this, and it has somehow gotten worse?

If it’s the result of an addon, they are allowed, but not supported. You would need to take the issue up with the addon author as they are the ones who would need to fix their addon and keep it from doing this. Try doing a full UI reset and see if the problem persists. If not, then try adding your addons back in one at a time and testing to see if you can find the culprit.

I noticed you’re on Cenarion Circle. Are you using TRP, too?

I’m planning to inform the TRP3 author as soon as I figure out whether or not it’s actually TRP3. So far, I’m still not certain. I posted here originally because I thought it was a WoW issue.

Just to inform everyone that has this same problem - haven’t found a solution yet.

This problem is caused by the game not joining certain chat channels under certain conditions, which then causes addons to sort their own chat channel before the other channel is joined. When you finally DO join that channel, it will end up in a weird spot and throw off all your colors and numbers (sometimes).

Ultimately, it’s Blizzard’s responsibility to fix this, but maybe someone will make an addon to help out with this soon.

Have you tried /resetchat and/or going into the individual addon settings and disabling their chat channels? Sometimes that could be enough to correct a chat issue without an entire UI reset. Otherwise the reset or removing the offending addon may be necessary, as mentioned above. I do not typically use custom colors so my suggestion may not be comprehensive, but has fixed other chat issues caused by addons I’ve had in the past.

I am using TRP, yes. It’s hard to experiment, because the problem doesn’t always happen, just very frequently.

I frequently disable TRP’s chat channel, but it always manages to come back.

Dragonflight’s here, and they still haven’t fixed this. Happens with both addons on and in vanilla play.

Follow-up, going to try editing chat-cache manually & set it to read only.
